You and Will are so totally rocking it with this journey across Canada and the great videos. I am thoroughly enjoying every minute. Thank you so much for letting us join you.
I'm really enjoying this series - and today's visit to "Canada's most southern point." I had to confirm that on a map - yes - it is south of Victoria/Vancouver Island... who knew!? I once used Point Pelee to stay close to land as I crossed the western end of Lake Erie in a small, single-engine airplane, on my way to St. Louis. 😉 It was nice having it point me towards my customs stop at Sandusky, Ohio.
BTW - I'm also enjoying the visits to the indigenous cultures along that way. That's an important part of Canada's history that I (we all?) need to better comprehend.
G'day Michael, Neo here from Brisbane Australia. I just wanted to say I am a fan of your vlogs etc thou I feel with your show's atm and please I bear no ill will at all thou I feel they are rushed and I get your on a time crunch so to speak and I am wondering will there ever be a time where we will see more footage eventually? Like I say I mean no disrespect to you in anyway at all and I love watching your adventures, it just seems your here one second and then boom gone and onto the next rushed scene, if that makes sense... Please keep up the great work and I would be happy to join you on your next adventure mate. From Neo.
You showed the briefest of views of Ottawa, a city I haven't visited since the border closed. I miss it and now I know of an additional place to see if I get back. I hope your Winnipeg visit included some time in the Royal Canadian Mint, which makes coins for as many as 80 other countries; the Canadian Museum for Human Rights; and the Manitoba Museum's history of the Hudson's Bay Company. And, of course, one must go through Portage and Main, an intersection I half jokingly call the center of the world. Since you went before the current war, you may or may not have delved into the history of Ukrainians in Canada, many of whom were interned in WWI as enemy aliens. The Peg is well known for its Ukrainian heritage and even has a memorial to the Holodomor.
Mike probably wanted to fit in more of Ottawa, but he has only 23 minutes per episode. In fact Ottawa may be worth an episode in itself - and he's already done videos about the Peace Tower clock and carillon. I don't know where he's going next, but I know I'll be there with him.
I love Tru Earth, them wool dryer balls don't they add static to your clothing? I've been debating on getting them but I have some polyester clothing and yeah I hate the static. LOL
Except that the journey is about twice as expensive as going cross country on Amtrak, the delays on VIA are even worse than Amtrak's, and Amtrak's cars are about 30 years newer than VIA's (and soon to be 60 years newer). But you don't really know anything about Amtrak, do you?
my two sons and I explored Point Pelee, the summer, about 10 years ago, after there had been a huge wind-storm through that region ... one of my favourite photos is of the two lads standing on a large rock at the southern tip of Point Pelee Park, after they had complained frequently and loudly about how long the walk was! They did show some interest in the fact that we were standing at the same latitude as Rome! Thanks for bringing back the memory!
Thanks for taking us to places we probably never imagined existed like a wine cellar on an island that happens to be the southernmost point in Canada. That train is exceptional with its 1950s look, dome car and white tablecloth dining car, especially as its a regular passenger train and not a luxury tourist train like the Orient Express or Royal Highlander.
@@Dobromil999 save up, there is rally no better way to travel, if you have the time, and granted money to do it...but there are discounts, for example seniors, caa that might help you
Via used to have big discounts on Tuesday mornings. They stopped it during COVID but hopefully it will be back, You get points every time you buy a ticket which has gotten me many free tickets on the Canadian over the year. Also, a 35$ a year membership with Hostelling Interational gets you 15% discount on Via, which can amount to hudreds on a cross-country trip. Worth it!
I had hoped that the train to Moosonee and Moose Factory might have been included in this series, I loved all that you could include. My first experience on train travel was from Cohrane ON to Mooseonee to the radar base there in 1972. We were posted there for 2 years and it was an amazing experience.
15:48 YOU'VE NEVER DONE THE CANADIAN??!! Oh My God. I was under the impression you were a regluar LOL, because you travel so much inside Canada. I've taken it over 30 times in all seasons & directions, and it's always awesome ❤
My first time on the Canadian was when they still had a night-train between Montreal and Toronto. So i was lucky enough to do it non-stop between my hometown of Lévis,QC all the way to Pacific Central ❤I was 17 (and i had a lower berth! My dad had given me $2500 and..... that's what i did with it.) Also they had a SMOKING bar car back then!!!! The bullet lounge had individual, blue leather "armchair" type seats instead of the couch they have now (which i like, the couch) and there was 6 clocks with the time zones by the self-serve tea/coffee area. i had heard they were going to "upgrade" the Canadian during COVID, I'm glad they kept the old school touches, like the leather pouches etc!
They always gave me 2 pieces of 2 different cakes when i took the Canadian too. What's cool is to make friends with someone, you both order something different, then share. You get to experience two times more good food. Yeah, you eat a lot on that train. I'm at Capreol now, really hope you stopped at PARRY SOUND! The train gets there at 4 AM and it's a small town of 3000 people but i decided to stop there in 2015 because... i had never been there and it was really fun 👍 I made friends wirth a lady there that's 97 now and she still drives
I know people that travel by train over flying for work. It's relaxing and gives time to plan and continue working along with meeting others and making new acquaintances. Thanks for sharing.
It never ceases to amaze me how far south the most populous parts of Canada actually are. The southern tip of Hudson Bay is as far south as the Netherlands (where I live), and Toronto is equal to something in southern Europe! Also: I had a funny moment when you first showed a close-up of Swiss Andy, and I was like, what do I know that guy from? How can he look familiar? But he must have been on Instagram months ago, lol!
I have always wanted to go down to Point Pelee, it's been on my bucket list for a long time! Maybe I can convince somebody with a car yo go with me this year 😁 I also want to do the train from Toronto to Vancouver. This country is just so big!
Fun fact: reserves of hot chocolate, coffee and tea are stored inside a secret compartment in the couch in the Canadian's bullet lounge (Park car /last car) ☕
i walked the whole train from coach to Park car once to film it and while the number of cars varies with the season, it was a long one (about 30 cars) and i'm a fairly fast walker and accostomed to walk on a train, and it took me 15 minutes!
Awesome video... unfortunate I missed you cause I'm 20 mins away from point pelee lol. Hope you has a fun time. It's beautiful and I go to the ferry every week to watch
Loved it! You've got to be one of the friendliest guys I've ever seen! You make everyone around you smile! This world needs more men like you! Thank you for sharing your smile,it's infectious! Yep, I'm smiling too!
I love this series. Tysvm. The first time I travelled across Canada was back in 1981, I was 11 years old and I travelled from Halifax N.S. To Grande Prairie, Alberta by greyhound bus. It was a long trip. Then when I was 16 in 1986 I travelled back home to Corner Brook, NL Both trips were fun and long.
It’s very cool you explored Pelee Island as Kelly’s Island and Put-In-Bay is on the US side of Lake Erie. You can actually take a ferry to get to either islands :)
Michael Downie I love love your travel videos through Canada it's so awesome to learn all about different places in good old awesome Canada 🇨🇦 😀....I can't wait until next Saturday to learn all about my childhood city of Winnipeg Manitoba...🍀🍀And Happy St. Patrick's Day to you and your family and friends and girlfriend 🍀🍀🍀👍👍🙂🙂
Loved seeing you go to Pelee Island. I grew up going to Kelly's Island and Put-in-Bay, also in Lake Erie, and remember my parents pointing out Middle Island and Pelee Island and telling me I was looking at Canada. I'm enjoying your videos and now my kids have started watching the series.
another amazing video from our favourite history teacher!! I didn't even know this island existed, it makes everything so much more unique and somewhat mysterious, and the helicopter simulator looks so realistic, I've flown in a helicopter few years ago for girls fly too in Vancouver it really bought back that awesome memory! the views from the train must be so so good!! traveling by train is really underrated, your series really shows how amazing trains are for travel and exploring the trains history itself., keep up the amazing work!
🇨🇦I know what it feels like to sleep on the train like that and enjoy those fantastic meals as you drink in that incomparable landscape. I’m thrilled that you shared this, Michael, and I hope to experience it one more time.
Superb video. I once read that a part of Canada was further south than northern California. I had to check this, and sure enough. That explains (partly) the wine industry in Ontario. An amazing video and very enjoyable.
Another fabulous trip with you and Will; more interesting and beautiful places in Canada. That wine room was unexpected and incredible. What a great idea to restore it in that ruins. A lot of history to it, as well. Looking forward to the next leg of your journey.
Another great video! Glad to see Capreol in the video. I grew up in Sudbury and we used to go to Capreol to pick blueberries. Nothing better than wild blueberries!
I love this series. I share in your joy that you are now able to experience your travel dreams. And heck we get to come along which is always a delight! Thanks Michael and Happy Trails.
Michael: The quality of your adventure entertainment just keeps getting better. Thanks for including us on your bucket list trip cant wait to see what you do in the province where I grew up. See you next week for sure.
