Takumar lenses are regarded as some of the best vintage M42 lenses. In this video I do a quick comparison between a Takumar and an old favorite of mine; the Auto Chinon 200mm f3.5
The reason why I did this test: I was looking to buy a Spotmatic camera, and found one which included this Takumar 200mm. I never intended to upgrade my Auto Chinon 200mm, but since the Takumar came with the camera (for a bargain) I felt like I needed to compare it with the Chinon in order to find out which 200mm to keep.

Thanks for this xxcellent comparative review. You showed the subtle differences. The Takumar is indeed slightly sharper but I like the way the Chinon delivers the colours.

I picked up the 300mm Takumar (went in for the 200mm and got confused). Looks like I'm going to head back for that 200mm!

Years ago when a friend was moving on to digital she gave me (for free) her old Pentax Spotmatic with a 50mm and a 200mm Takumar lenses and I am stoked to use both of these on my digital camera. I'm an old film guy and have worked out a good method for using film lenses on my Canon so I'm ready to try the Takumars. I have already experimented with Minolta lenses and the results have been great and fun, The BONUS to using these is it will help you better understand your camera and make a more informed Photographer. Great Video !!!!!

Verey well comparison. I agree, the Takumar beats the Auto Chinon in some areas. I started with Chinon lenses and by the demise of Chinon, I migrated to Pentax. Furthermore, I think Chinon lenses are excellent. I have a 55 f1.7 Macro Auto Chinon (I think that is the fastest macro lens) which is my favorite 50 ish lens in comparison to all others. The others are Takumars 50mm 1.4, 55 mm 1.8, 50mm 4, and M 1.7, and two Helioses and one Sigma, etc...

Nice comparison! They are fairly close. I'm thinking the Chinon may be the same as the Auto Vivitar Telephoto 200mm 3.5. It has really surprised me on the image quality. It can also be used with an extender as a very nice macro.

Hi Ohjajohh, nice video, I always enjoy the calm shots you use for your videos. Yes, the Takumar looks a little better (although with the RU-vid compression some of that difference is probably lost), but I always think that if you like a lens and the way the images come out, then it doesn't matter if it's technically the best one or not. I have several vintage 28mm lenses, the best one is an Auto Super Paragon which is really sharp but I like my Chinon 28mm and it's the Chinon that more or less lives on the camera and shoots most of my general video footage (unless I'm doing a lens test video of course).

Nice comparisons , really hard to spot the difference but I think takumar has warmer colours generally anyways . Did you use ND ?
