First time I visited a Mall in the Philippines with my Filipino surfing buddy I heard a girl singing beautifully. I asked my buddy if there was a concert. He just looked at me strangely like I just came out of a cave and said "Just a kid with karaoke". then just carried on walking like it was the norm. 🙂

Yeah. That kind of thing is normal here. Even in school, like, if you're late, or answer incorrectly, you have to choose between singing or dancing in front of class.

We usually have higher expectations on singers since good singers are everywhere in PI. Most of them are belters so this is pretty much normal.. even those salespeople that sells those microphones are good singers..

Fun fact: the love of music and singing of Filipinos are even used as a marketing technique by some Karaoke brands. Hiring promotion merchants that can sing, the reason why some of them seems to wear uniforms 😁

You may have forgotten, the reason many Filipinos speak fluently in English is because English is being taught in schools from pre-schools up to colleges. Apart from the Pilipino subject in every academic year, is there any other subject wherein textbooks are written in Tagalog language?... Only English. Math, sciences, history, etc... are all in English, even our own Philippine history books are written in English. So, that’s the reason why so many Filipinos speak fluently in English. ‘Mind you, no Filipino can sing at all if he/she didn’t go to school. Also just FYI, the Philippines is the world’s third largest English speaking country. That is a fact...

Hi Bubs & Doe, karaoke stores are all over the country. Every mall, wherever in the Philippines, has karaoke machines for sale and they allow anyone who wants to sing to do so. Amazingly, their are so many good singers and really good singers who don't have real training! So it's common that tv shows have singing competitions and discover talents. The students usually pass by the malls to hang out. Karaoke is one of the favorite past time. Weddings, birthdays or whatever occasion, it is certain that you'll have a karaoke session.

I remembered in one local singing competition here the Philippines, the contestant says she's nervous and gotten by the nerves, the one of the judges says and advise future contestants to try singing in a Mall hahaha like those in the vids. To loosen up and to get used to "crowd".

In case you're still wondering how could these happen in a mall, it's when the shop is selling electronics like a TV and/or home Karaoke devices, and they have these karaoke mics set-up for demos. Sometimes, they'd have the sales person singing, and anyone walking by could try it out as well :D

The first singer sang a song about animals got together to sing in a band. Its a funny song if you can understand the Tagalog lyrics.
