I think what gets me is that split second of tenderness on Leona's face when she sees Diana. And, while, she's hurt and angry Diana never wants to actively harm Leona. The divide between these two makes for some picture perfect angst.

That last look between Leona and Diana... now everything makes perfect sense

That archer has godlike aim, was expecting him to miss like a stormtrooper or something.

After the reveal of Leona and Diana's relationship I now look at that last scene of them staring at each other with new context.

Another way to see it is that they both died when he walked onto the cliff, but their souls kept going ahead leaving the bodies behind, passing their "challenge" and ascending thanks to Targon magic.
