The Scottish grey wolf or Liath Madadh allaidh stands at an around 1 meter in height and was very similar to the artic wolf. They were a native species to Britain and were commonly found in the vast untainted forests of the Scottish Highlands. For hundreds of years the highlanders despised the wolfs, they were constantly at odds with each other. The death of many highland clansmen was attributed to the wolfs, large packs would come to farms on cold winter nights, and wipe out whole herds of cattle, leaving the farmers to starve in their homes or freeze to death hunting in the bitter winter snows. The shielings, found alround Scotland were built to give travellers refuge on there route, but in the old days it was not the wind or the hail that they feared, but the wolves. Not only did the wolves, ruin lives and take them, but they were known to desecrate burial grounds. In Sutherland near the bay of Eddrachillis the wolves exhumed bodies from the graves with such frequency that the inhabitants, resorted to burying there dead on the near-by island of Handa. All this is to say that during that time in Scotland the wolfs were hated. It then stands to reason that the man who killed the last of the Scottish wolfs would be remembered as folk hero and much loved by the locals. And there was no shortage of those that appeared to claim the title.

They've not been a part of the land for hundreds of years, there would be no wildlife to sustain them and once again domestic livestock and people would be in danger. Best leave well enough alone
@Kingsaxxy3872
@Kingsaxxy3872 2 года назад
@@timothygreer188 no Wildlife to sustain them? What about the hundreds of Red Deer, Roe Deer, Reindeer, Wild Boar and other animals there. The Highlands have more than enough space for them, might be some trouble with livestock but we could get hunters to get them if that happens and if the population is out of control like Deer. Also attacks on people are very rare it could happen but they usually attack if they feel threatened or have pups
@timothygreer188
@timothygreer188 2 года назад
@@Kingsaxxy3872 There are barely enough Deer for stalking season and nobody's going to be too keen to hand the Cairngorm Reindeer over to wolves, not to mention the Highland Coos. Maybe we can tell them to eat as many of the Wild Boar, Hares, and Rabbits as they see fit but mind the Wildcat, Otters, and Badgers.

Im a Mcgillivray bloodline from the highlands so that was pretty neat to hear about andrew 🐺also to mention im from up Gairloch way so when i heard gairloch in your other video made me feel very homey and took me back to my youth for a second which was awesome, nice to hear a shame i didnt hear these stories as a youngster growing up in the villages. Small world eh. Cool as fuck thanks again bringing forward some cracking Scottish folklore that all of us should know and be taught. In every myth there is a grain truth. And much we do not know or understand. Keep it up mate. Best regards.

No doubt these stories have as much verasity as other great tales-like "Little Red Riding Hood". Doea ANYBODY REALLY believe there were a dozen "last wolves"??IN more than a dozen different locations??

These stories viewed through a modern prism seem to imply that wolves as a species were in trouble in Scotland possibly centuries before they were finally wiped out. Even the one bit of old oral tradition that you quoted mentioned how hungry the wolves seemed to always be. The behavior they exhibited in all of those stories seems to imply the same thing. They were scavenging graves, opportunistically targeting children, and even attacking grown armed men according to the stories and pretty much none of that is normal for major predators when their habitats are healthy and primary food sources are plentiful.

@@LiathWolf You likely know that Fort William was built by Cromwell invasion 1650 ish to "Keep the peace" in the highlands? Later rebuilt and named Fort William 1690 ish? Now a railway, It wasn't just wolves that were being burned from their land at the time. Empire killed the last wolves here though it took empire 1600 years to do it. Within those years "myth" resides.

Contrary to popular belief, wolves primarily eat grasses, grains, fruits, and other plant based food. During winter when food is scares their diet becomes primarily carnivorous.

The irony is, the more the humans killed off the wolves, the more likely the few remaining may hunt humans, as they no longer had a pack to take down larger prey.

Our western lands were, are cattle country. Wolves were wiped out though coyotes roamed. They have been reintroduced, but the cattleman don't like it. Any wolves that kill livestock are hunted down to the last of that pack. This is hearsay only, so if I'm wrong no biggie.

Yeah. There's far too many people and far to few prey for reintroducing wolves of any kind into Scotland. Though here in the States they've been reintroduced to some of their former areas.
@LiathWolf
@LiathWolf 2 года назад
Yeah, while researching this video, I read quite a lot about the grey wolf packs being reintroduced in Yellowstone national park. That instance, along with a few other American examples of reintroduction. Were used in the parliamentary debates in the 60s, 90s and 00s, to show successful attempts of reintroduction. Thanks for watching.

@@ghash242 And, how long do you think it would take a pack or two of wolves to decimate that population, along with farm livestock, and probably people. Wolves are an opportunistic lot, and will prey on whatever is easiest to get. There's also far to many cars as well.

This is propaganda! It was a Macqueen ancestor and later chief of our clan that killed the last wild Scottish wolf. That what the Macqueen clan was known for. We were the Witcher's from Skye. All my ancestors did was kill wolves that had killed the sheep of farmers from the other clans. They would use, rifles, claymores and bayonets to wolf kill. Our sigil is a wolf head as our highlanders used to carry rotting wolf heads around as tokens of the kills.
