TIME STAMPS: 4:02 -- The show kicks off with discussion of the essential role that Quik played in the success story of Talib, Hi-Tek and Rawkus Records on the West Coast. They go on to explore how much Quik taught Talib about vocal recording during their first collaboration on 'Put It In The Air' and Talib being fully inspired by his approach of getting the best out of everyone while building in the studio. They also get into the unusual collab of Talib, Hi-C and Shyhiem on Quik's song 'Tha Proem,' as well as how Quik powered through a show the same night he took a serious spill off his motorcycle. 12:00 -- Quik speaks on his Compton, California upbringing, and being the youngest of 10 kids. He details the challenges of navigating the gang violence surrounding him in his community and not letting it hinder his creative ambitions. They go on to discuss the amazing music his mother turned him onto while growing up, how that contributed to his ear as a producer and Quik is asked what it is about P-Funk specifically that made it so influential to the West Coast sound. They also explore his house being raided by the cops three times prompting his mother's move down South as well as the ongoing tensions with his sister. 22:56 -- Quik reveals how he never was in a gang or even wanted to join a gang, despite his growing up in a Blood neighborhood and all his close friends being from the set. They go on to discuss the impact of his infamous 'Red Tape' that was sold locally before his record deal, the power of Isaac Hayes' 'Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic,' used for the sample on 'Born and Raised in Compton,' and how it was a beat that Playa Hamm passed on. They also get into the genius and charisma of Eazy-E, Quik's friendship with him, and the process of creating the tribute track 'Quikker Said Than Dunn.' 32:13 -- Quik is asked for his take on the impact of 'Tonite' as a single and what it meant to Cali. Quik gives the backstory of how the iconic track came together, the song essentially writing itself over the course of a drunken weekend, partying with friends and Quik experiencing his first real hangover. They go on to talk about the signature 'Quik's Grooves' that became tradition for years and is asked the common question of if he ever plans on making a full album of those instrumentals. They also discuss Quik's love for St. Louis and the man named Gus who put him down with a herringbone and shoes galore, that he paid homage to in 'Jus Lyke Compton.' 43:03 -- Quik details the night he accidentally stumbled across Talib and Hi-Tek's 'The Blast' while on a mushroom trip, after attending a Kobe Bryant party event. They discuss Quik's initial reaction to hearing the song in his car that night and how that discovery led to much of the West Coast's introduction to Talib and Hi-Tek's music when Quik brought the tape to the radio the next day to share with his listeners. They go on to explore Quik's connection with 2Pac, the songs he produced for him, and the time he got into a fist fight and had a machine gun put to his face during a dispute over a 2Pac bootleg tape. 52:11 -- Quik speaks on his experience at the 1995 Source Awards when he performed the iconic MC Eiht diss track, 'Dollaz & Sense,' and his wanting to rap directly to Eiht who was in attendance. They go on to discuss Quik's song 'You'z A Ganxta,' his 'Rhythm-Al-Ism' album being a growing up record and making the decision to stop touring when they found themselves having to wear bulletproof vests and make escape routes at shows. Quik also talks about how his fighting over Pac's bootleg tape cemented their friendship, Pac and Quik settling their differences in the weight room, and he reflects on how much he misses his friend. 1:03:01 -- Quik is asked what makes Suga Free so special as he goes on to outline how much Suga Free puts into his performances, his charisma and explains the Suga Free-Richard Pryor connection. They go on to discuss Suga Free's grind, doing as many shows as possible and how it's given his old records new life. Talib also speaks on his love for Quik's 2000 album 'Balance & Options,' and they go on to talk about Quik's ostracizing of that record due to its lackluster reception and all the pain he was experiencing at the time due to the death of his friend, rapper Mausberg. 1:11:54 -- Quik talks about what makes Raphael Saadiq of Tony! Toni! Toné! so great, as well as how his exceptional musicality and conceptualism make him stand out. Quik goes on to talk about Raphael introducing him to D'Angelo, finding out how D could throw down on the basketball court, and Quik and Raphael deciding to collaborate on the classic party cut 'Let's Get Down.' They discuss recording to analog vs. digital, the magic that comes from laying down a track to magnetic tape and the special nuances it brings. They also explore making 'We Still Party' using the natural reverb from claps in the bathroom. 1:23:26 -- Quik's 'Unsung' documentary from 2015 is brought up and they get into what it was missing. They discuss Talib and Quik's mutual love for A Tribe Called Quest, where Quik places Ice Cube and Rakim in his top rappers of all-time list and finally getting the chance to work with Cube. They go on to explore Quik's chef hand, his favorite dishes to whip up and his gaining his love for cooking while on the road when it became a necessity. They also discuss Quik's Creole heritage, how Quik hooks up his Gumbo, and the best compliment he can receive as a cook. In closing he is asked what we can expect next from DJ Quik.

My comments are being deleted all over the place. Orlando wasn't the shooter. He was the decoy. RW Sr escorted him out of the MGM. Look up the footage. Lower left hand corner. Creme colored suit. Low hair cut. Bifocals... Later on, Suge paid Orlando $60,000 & referred to him as "a good kid". All of this is a verifiable fact. RW Jr. disarmed security & cut off communication. Suge helped by taking the wrong route & hold Pac down. He would never pay somebody to shoot directly at him. The 14 bullets went through the passenger side doors below the door handle. Look up the archive BMW photo. Suge never got shot. Off duty lapd did it. Gaines. Pac was killed over money, disrespect, and possibly Michel'le. Suge owed Pac $18M at the time of his death. Pac tried to get it back & ran into a problem. He had DR's books audited. He stole some of his own master recordings out of the studio. He fired Kenner & RW Jr. There was a fight between him & Suge in NYC before coming back to LA before Vegas. Then of course Pac got killed. Suge took the wrong route & held him down. Didn't help Afeni pay for the memorial services. She had to sue to get Pac's money. Suge countersued her. Pac's death was an inside job... These details were hard to find, but this is the truth.

That song is the number 1 dope boy or go getter anthem ever.When that song came out it was on fire but radio stations were made to stop playing it bcuz they said it promoted narcotics that's why that single wasn't as big as it could've been.They might've kept playing it on the west but other places didn't play it they only played Dollaz + Sense and that radio version was too watered down for me compared to the original

@keldorthebluemack Год назад
@@jamesduckery5667 Quik admitted he didn't do alot of interviews back then he barely does them now and if he does it's not with the bigger ones that'll get him more attention or curiosity of people who don't know that much about him.There were other magazines but yeah The Source and Rap Pages were the biggest.He also had a interview in Vibe which interviewed rappers but they interviewed black entertainers in general not just rap.But like I said Safe + Sound was made to be pulled from radio stations and Quik said he didn't do a good job of promoting the album himself bcuz he knew he was big already and had a strong fanbase so he just let the album sell itself.Same way he said in the song he didn't sell dope it sold itself
