The palm tree Talipot or Corypha umbraculifera, bears flowers only once in a lifetime and then dies. After 50 years these magnificent plants flowered for the first time in the Flamengo Park in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The enormous inflorescence at the top of tree bears thousands of tiny flowers and after that, thousands of coconuts with seeds, and then graciously passes away, or dies along the next two years of its lifetime. The Flamengo Park was built during the 1960's and was inaugurated in 1965. Idiealized by Lotta Macedo Soares, a friend of the governor at the time Carlos Lacerda. She invited the landscaper Roberto Burle Marx to design and plant the reclaimed Flamengo beach area designed at first for the growing traffic from downtown Santos Dumont Airpot to Botafogo Beach. Burle Marx brought back from India and Sri Lanka seeds of these palm trees and planted them in the park along with other species of the Brazilian Flora. These 5 specimens are in flower now and are located right next to the once beautiful and historical Hotel Gloria awaiting its renovation.
