No it is not compulsory the reason for drawing L is to see if there is an option to turn off black screen if it doesn't show that then you'll have to reset your phone.
Yes it does remove all of your data. As you can see when you draw L shape on your phone’s screen if there is an option to disable DIM-SCREEN then click on that otherwise this is the only solution.
