I built this drum sander many years ago, long before I was making videos. I get a lot of questions about it so this was an opportunity to show its construction and talk about the design.

I've watched a lot of diy drum sander videos and this one is the best so far. Tons of useful info. Thank you for your work.

Thanks for the video. I found it very interesting and appreciated your dialog explaining the how and whys of it's construction!

Very informative, just the kind of things I need to know because I am about ready to build one. The stainless steel sheet on your table was priceless knowledge. thank you very much for sharing this. 12 years use and still going is testament to your design choices once again thank you very much.

Great setup and design. I especially like the idea of having two grits of sandpaper. Thanks so much for explaining and sharing...

Kevin, I have asked and you have delverd. Much appreciated. And your reasoning behind it as well as problems. Purpose is also a relevant topic. Thanks!

That is a cool machine. I love the simplicity of the design.

I'm building one at the moment (from an old washing dryer, so motor, belt etc.are already in place) but it's the first time I saw this drum/sandpaper attachment. That makes life so much easier and cheaper over here as normal sandpaper sheets are available, but rolls have to be ordered somewhere on-line. So thanks for sharing, this video gave me a few ideas!

Thanks for sharing. This is an - excellent - project and explanation of how you designed the sander and why you incorporated some features the way you did. I especially appreciate you mentioned the original distance in height from the drum to the level table. I have s specific production project at home in mind this cost effective sander will be perfect for. I'm sure I speak for all, we appreciate the time and effort put into making your videos. Thanks again for sharing.

FIRST!!!!!!!! Excellent video Kevin. I have a homemade drumsander that is powered by my Shopshith, and I have been wanting to get the bed assembly to a more precise and user friendly state. It works for my needs now, but I am pleased that you really explained your build and described the components. This information helps me immensely and I will be headed out to the shop soon to complete my bed assy for my sander. Again, Great info and video! Kevin

You mentioned the surface quality; do you think this would be a good machine to build to flatten glued up rings for segmented turnings, or would your open ended be better for that application?
@krtwood
@krtwood 5 лет назад
I prefer the closed end for that kind of thing. The open end goes out of adjustment too much and it's really difficult to get it dialed in parallel. The newer machines have a better system for doing that though.
@bradschowengerdt7475

Nice. Do you have plans for this?
@krtwood
@krtwood 5 лет назад
No, just the measurements on the side panel that I put in the video.
@amiddled
@amiddled 5 лет назад
The reasons for it producing low quality results.... What specifically is the reason for that? Is it the MDF segmented drum? You mention truing it up at the end - does that not improve it?
@krtwood
@krtwood 5 лет назад
Part of it is that the surface quality of any drum sander isn't that great to begin with. Wide belt sanders do much better. Mostly with mine it's that it's difficult to maintain a constant feed rate doing it by hand. Particularly when taking a very light pass, as you would with the finer grits. It's easier when you have more resistance against you, but if you take a heavier pass with the fine paper you'll wear it out in no time.

@krtwood
@krtwood 3 года назад
@@GuoShushan You're usually measuring the stock, not how the sander is set. It only removes a tiny amount so you set it based on the thickness of what you have and then check the results as you go if you need a specific thickness.
