Yeah I agree with your more nuanced analysis, at the time my read was that it was probably intended to be comedic but very true frustration/anger clouded the execution of the moment so it just felt, like, extremely surreal lmao. On stealing Hbox's thunder or whatever though, one of HGod's superpowers for literally a decade+ has been the ability to somehow appear on stage regardless of whoever won in literally every major, forever :p

I found it cringe but at the same time its such a iBDW move that I couldn't not laugh. It lasted a bit to long with all the weird touching, but hearing that he nearly passed out makes sense. Hell H-box passed out from a pop off and he's been doing it for years. It was a damn good set though, as was most of top 8.

The idea was next level by Cody. Hbox has popped off on everyone in the scene multiple times, slapping tvs, rolling on the floor. He's bugged a lot of people with it. It's about time he had the joke played on him instead. Execution was 1/10 though and that's what made it cringe. Now no one will try it again because the risk of messing it up is too high and clearly too many people in the community can't take a joke. It was Cody's one chance to get this right and he blew it, but I respect the attempt. Regardless of how anyone feels though, the bottom line is Cody thought it was funny, Hbox thought it was funny, and nobody got hurt. Period. Anybody calling Cody or Hbox assholes for this are unhinged.

honest opinion from me. If he had not reacted in game 1 about the ledge grab limit (pretty sure hbox know the ledge grab limit more than any person in the smash community with m2k of course) i would have just laugh. But the game 1 ending reaction sadly made for me the counter popoff from cody at the end kinda cringe and looks more like a salty mockery of hbox usual popoff after close win. But of course now in my personal world i like to imagine it was Cody being a hero and save hbox from killing himself with an heart attack popoff by doing it himself instead xD

It could have just been a poorly executed joke "stealing" the pop off, but yelling "stalling won" kind of tells a lot. Goes from bad prank to rage fit.

The execution of the counter pop off as a joke was definitely off. Really getting in HBox's face like that felt really aggressive and disruptive. I also think that the timing, on a set where iBDW was visibly frustrated, was not ideal. I can hear emotion in iBDW's voice. If he had chosen to do it after a set where he was joking between games and seemed to be having fun... It would have all gone better in different circumstances. There's no reason to doubt that iBDW held onto HBox to not faint. I have low blood pressure, so I've actually collapsed quite a few time from standing up too suddenly. After a stressful and exhausting game, and all that jumping...

I imagine it's got to be necessary for ibdw to walk away from this, seeing how he looked on the footage, and try to play it off as a joke. I'm not hurt or offended by it, other than the skin crawling cringe it caused me. That said, if you don't like getting popped off on by hbox, then win the set. Don't try to steal his thunder after he earned the victory.

Moist Critikal made a solid point that IBDW redefined the meta with his anti-pop off, and the month long preparation and planning garners a level of respect to the commitment of what's going to be cemented in whacky moments in melee. ngl I don't think Cody had bad intentions, I think it just... kinda sorta almost crossed a few lines (personal boundaries, Cody getting so close that it could be misread as an angry confrontation). I think he could have maybe possibly discussed the "bit" with Hbox beforehand? or ran it by TOs or others?

Cody and hbox are pretty good friends. He helped hbox a lot during his big slump in the online era, they had a number of really long conversations about competitive mentality and cody has really been in his corner rooting for him to get back into competitive form. I believe Cody has even talked about how he's totally fine with hbox planking the ledge like that to whatever extent is legal under tournament rules, the midset rules check was just because ledgegrab limits are super inconsistent between events right now and he needed to know what the actual limit was. There's definitely something to be said for the details of how it came off, but I think it generally came from a good place and I think Hbox saw that more or less immediately, he hasn't been 'pretending' it didn't bother him - it just didn't bother him, re recognized that it was funny and that his friend was excited for him, even if there was some other stuff going on to make that a bit less obvious to casual viewers.

Honestly if someone pops off after I lose a close set I won’t even be mad, bc I’d be doing the exact same thing my opponent is doing if it was me who won. Now, on the actual reverse pop off itself, like yeah it’s definitely disrespectful, but it was pretty funny, and if Hbox isn’t even mad abt it then why should everyone else be?

Yeah it was just really poor execution on Cody's part that made it embarrassing to watch, obviously like most anything in life there's always gonna be someone out there that finds it funny but the majority consensus is pretty clear that it was just weird and awkward so I say just let Cody own it and move on instead of making excuses for him.

it's funny, it's going to be remembered for a long time to come, and the context with ledge-camping on the first match and everything else people will forget about. I think even his frustration with the context makes it funnier because it makes everything more volatile. I think the weird reaction from the community, especially people who found it difficult to watch, is just outlandish. Maybe covid + karen outrage videos have mentally tampered people's expectations of friends/rivals goofing around, but these aren't two strangers, you shouldn't be living vicariously through them to the point it makes you cringe.
