That Teddy Ruxpin commercial was great. "Teddy's not a mass murdering lunatic like all your children's other toys." They REALLY went heavy-handed on the "wholesome", "family-friendly" angle. What an aggressive sales pitch!

Teddy Ruxpin was truly a great toy to have during the 80s, I had him for many years and loved hearing his stories and watching his cartoon show. It's times like this, I wish Worlds of Wonder did not go out of business and was still around today.

IMO, the talking doll "fad" wasn't a fad at all, rather the start of a whole new generation of interactive toys. I'm a casual collector of FurReal Friends toys, as I find the technology behind them very fascinating! Many would find them creepy, especially my friends, but I clearly see something in them they don't see.
@dianecarr6401

Exactly! I'm still remembering A doll that I used to play with at Walmart back in about 1997-98. It amazed me the way he interacted with you. You had to squeeze his hand to get the answers or interact with him. He used to tell jokes, he was like a hilbilly type person I think.

Thanks for the video! It's sad that so many adults and kids are scared of dolls nowadays due to them being made main characters in horror films. When I was a child there was nothing more magical than Teddy Ruxpin, Big Bird, or Mother Goose from World of Wonder telling you a story. There were dolls I didn't have or didn't know about like Cricket and Julie. I think it would be wonderful if children these days could experience them in their 1980s glory!

My grandfather was fascinated by the tech behind talking dolls so he picked a lot of them up for my brother and I. I’ve still got Teddy Ruxpin, Grubby and Mother Goose, but also had Alf and Cricket back in the day. I admit it’s easy to find them creepy but for me that’s also part of their charm.

I knew someone who had Teddy Ruxpin and Grubby. Maybe I’m remembering wrong, but doesn’t Gribby just plug into Teddy and play/song along? I don’t remember him having the casette player as Teddy did. I don’t really recall a talking Alf but Burger King had promos going back in the day, puppets of 1 each Alf puppet included a record they came with….. I had the chef 1, there was sort of a vacationing 1, a baseball 1, and I forget the 4th)

Fun Fact. A year after the Cricket doll was released, they released a male version of the doll called Corky. Corky also ran on cassette's and was marketed for little boys. He looked alot like a My buddy doll, only with moving mouth and eyes. The same voice actor to voice Corky also voiced the Good Guy Dolls in the Child's play movie a year later.

I had a Cricket doll growing up, and I love that her mouth and eyes moved. It didn’t creep me out at all, in fact, I played with her so much that my cousin gave me hers when mine broke. Now, thanks to Cricket and Corky’s Clubhouse, I have a playlist of all the cricket, Corky, and Jill, RU-vid videos as MP3’s forever. Nostalgia rocks, especially when I get to keep the stories, jokes, and songs that have never completely left my memory.

I was hoping you would mention the dolls that didn’t take cassette tapes. Like the talking Julie doll from 1987. You could say certain things to her and she would respond appropriately with one of her several programmed comments. She also had sensors on her fingers that you could place on books and she would read them. There were talking cabbage patch dolls that didn’t require cassette tapes either.

My best friend had a talking doll (we were 12 in 2000) that said something about splashing in the bath tub or something like that & it took batteries One night, I was sleeping over at her house & her mom decided to play with a Oiuji Board (we were in my friends room) with her friends I s*it you not, that f*cking doll started talking on its own & saying "killing" instead of "splashing". We freaked tf out, removed the batteries & threw it outside The next morning it was back in her room, sans batteries, & talking Now, we knew her mom could've lied about putting it in her room & it could've still had a charge (like with a smoke detector) minus the batteries, but we both remember very vividly it saying "kill" the night before & still the next day. We cut that doll up & threw it away piece by piece in different places (like effing serial killers, but whatever lol) Needless to say I will NEVER touch a Ouiji or allow it in my house/space. Better safe than sorry 😬 I also, after catching part of Chucky soon after, turned all of my dolls/barbies facing the wall at night (I had a shelf that went around the top of my room with collectors dolls & normal ones on it) 😳

The main issue with talking dolls was when they would become demonically possessed during the night and turn to you with glowing red eyes and threaten to eat your soul. Was all a bit distressing for 5 year old me.

I mean, to be fair they are all pretty much nightmare fuel.

Well, I can't speak for Eric but make mine say, "All work and no play makes Tig a dull boy"

If people find these creepy they have issues & are sissies. The same gen that will let their kids play FNAF and claim they can handle it seriously thinks these were creepy? Idk about y’all but the 80’s toys with the technology was way better than the toys we give kids today. all just solid plastic with a button that may say one or two phrases and there’s no movement.

There are some pretty advanced toys nowadays. Most are pretty expensive though.

@@NerdOutWithMe I don’t consider today’s toys more advanced….none of the dolls actually are animated like cricket or teddy. They have talking dolls, but they don’t move their faces.

I had a lot of these. I loved this fad until I knew about Chucky 😅 Then they started creeping me out. I remember camping outside of Bradlees in TR with my mom to get Furbys for my younger brother and sister. That was the one and only time I camped outside of a store for anything 😅

HAHAHA!! Amazing. (PS - I've been searching for a sweet Bradlees shirt for a while now)
