I remember an interview with David Byrne where he said the big suit idea came from watching Kabuki theatre in Japan when objects and props are made larger than life for the effect on stage.
One great thing about bands that are so versatile like Talking Heads in that you can't say they have a definite sound. There really is no such thing as a Talking Heads song and that says a lot about any band.
I was there, they filmed it over 4 days. I'm telling you, not one single person was sitting after the first 2songs. I took some acid which was not needed. His songs just make you high. Last time I did drugs. The whole place was jumping.
One of my fave TH songs of all time. It's bass line is so...I don't even know how to describe it...it's groove is provocative as anything like it's earthy and true with the slightest edge of wise sarcasm.
Best CONCERT I've ever seen. 83 or 84 at the Hollywood Palladium. I lost 10 pounds just keeping up. Every song was a kicker and the 2 girls backup singers. It's been called Best Concert ever filmed.
The Talking Heads were from a time when music artists were allowed to get creative and do their own thing.Today the music industry is formulatic with the sole purpose of making money
In that Byrne-on-Byrne interview he talks about the Big Suit and how he was going for a visual effect that would make his head seem smaller somehow LOL
So glad you guys reacted to this. I owned the vhs when I was a kid and it’s the reason I became a musician. I’ve owned the dvd probably 3 times (I would keep letting people borrow it and never got it back, which is fine). I wish I got a chance to see this tour but like you guys I wasn’t even born yet. I have seen David Byrne live solo a bunch of times and he’s amazing of course. Check out his recent hbo special “America utopia”. The ongoing debate is always “what’s the best concert movie of all time” and the conversation is between SMS and the last waltz. You guys should watch the last waltz as well, directed by Martin Scorsese. Really amazing stuff.
Gonna break your heart, here. I saw the SMS tour at Red Rocks. Probably a better performance and definitely a better venue than the film. Incredible! Oh, I have a concert film I think belongs in the conversation. Laurie Anderson's "Home of the Brave". Laurie, guitarist Adrian Belew, author William S. Burroughs, keyboardist Joy Askew, and percussionist David Van Tieghem.
@@jameswilson8433 very jealous that you got to see that. Was it the same basic set list? I know they played “the book I read” and a few other songs that didn’t make it to the movie.
@@steelyd2 Same deal. Band came out one by one. set 1 Psycho Killer (David Byrne solo acoustic guitar) Heaven (David Byrne & Tina Weymouth) Thank You for Sending Me an Angel Love-> Building on Fire The Book I Read Slippery People Cities Big Blue Plymouth (Eyes Wide Open) (David Byrne song) Burning Down the House Life During Wartime set 2 Making Flippy Floppy Swamp What a Day That Was (David Byrne song) This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) Once in a Lifetime Big Business / I Zimbra Houses in Motion Genius of Love (Tom Tom Club cover) Girlfriend Is Better Take Me to the River (Al Green cover) Encores Crosseyed and Painless Burning Down the House August 26 1983. My memory's a little hazy, I spent essentially all of '83 on either Psilocybin or Lysergic acid diethylamide. I distinctly remember David dancing with the lamp and Tina's Fender Swinger guitar in "This Must be the Place".
Getting through my 2nd watching of your reactions of this movie. Good Stuff. Didn't read any comments below so I may be redundant. Tom Tom Club before (a spin off group with Tina and her husband Chris) played the song before so David could get into his suit. I saw a more recent interview with Byrne with Conan: He said that the idea of the suit came from seeing Japanese theater where they wear oversized costumes. He wanted his head to appear small compared to the rest of his body.
absolutely loved stop making sense when i saw it in september! id love to see a reaction to the great curve sometime if you haven’t heard it yet. remain in light is one of talking heads’ best albums, i think!
This is the most new york sh!t ever, this whole film...i got into it as a 27 year old artist & musician almost 20 years ago, it changed my whole paradigm, hell yeah, great damn reactions
I know what you mean about not knowing what to say about any one of the songs in this concert. You can randomly pick any song and it's a 'banger' (as the youngin's say). But this song is one of the most popular from the concert.
Someone needs to bring the Big Suit back. I was there!! Well, not at this exact show, but during this tour, we saw them. Amazing. I *think* the big suit was just being theatrical and being big and seen on stage, but I could be wrong. I enjoy your reactions, even if you just enjoy and like them.
Thanks for watching Joseph! That’s the tshirt for our band sight after dark. You can order one here: www.sightafterdarkonline.com/product-page/sight-after-dark-t
