We lived in 4 unit condo. ( big old house) my neighbor the biker one night was blaring this from his huge stereo at 2 am. Woke everyone up. My wife says go over there and tell him to turn it down, so I go, knock on the door but he can’t here me. I can hear him and his wife wooting and hollering, doors open so I walk in. He looks really high so I’m yelling turn it down. He can’t hear me and goes and turns it up and his wife grabs me and starts dancing. Then he hand me the mirror , so I think wth. Can’t beat em join em. My wife comes in and sees us jumping around the room and gets really mad but the music is so loud I can’t hear what she’s saying. So he hands her the mirror and she starts grooving then the yuppies from upstairs come down and the same thing happens. Ends up with eight people jumping around in their bathrobes having a blast. This concert has that mojo.
Those erratic dance moves and the phrasing are what make David Byrne what he is. Can you imagine being in the studio with him. “Alright, I have some music and lyrics I’ve put together but I wanna hear something that makes me dance like this”. Lol. Talking Heads are so damn amazing.
Alex Weir, did a phenomenal job in this show. He’s a fantastic example of someone playing the rhythm guitar in a “lead” sort of way. His guitar work on Burning Down the House was also great.
Honestly, I've become such a fan of this channel! If not for your genuine reactions and teaching. The diversity in music we get to experience! Dude, this is incredible!
I just love how happy this makes you. I grew up with this and David Byrne was a friend of a friend and was my absolute idol in music. When Stop Making Sense came out I was still pretty young but went to see it in a beautiful old classic theater. I had never heard of a 'concert movie' or anything like it, so when the teenagers started dancing in front of the front row I was blown away like I had just taken mushrooms for the first time. I egged my friend on but he wouldn't dance, but I sure as hell did. People danced in the front row from beginning to end and it was one of my happiest memories that year. Surprisingly I didn't go into rock, but stuck with classical (piano), traditional (Hammered Dulcimer), and archaic (Japanese Flute), but the Talking Heads make this era in contemporary music survivable for my wee self. It was so incredible we lasted years on this show alone.
This and the last waltz are the two best concert dvds of all time. To be completely honest, the first time I ever watched this show I was in college and on mushrooms and I was instantly in love with talking heads! David Byrne is a genius.. and that is why he is in the rock and roll hall of fame. Simply brilliant.
He's still writing, rocking out, and dancing too! We saw American Utopia last year in NYC, and a month before that we saw the impressive cover band at a small venue. They both helped us get through this year for sure!
