I use a stiff A3 sheet over my mat; white one side, purple t'other. It helps a lot by being able to easily track the smaller parts of a model whilst building by using whichever side contrasts best with the colour of the styrene of the model.

Excellent list. I am a retired Canadian Army veteran, will be sixty soon! I have built models since childhood usually with 3-5 year gaps in between. I must say since I really got back into it, 2018 timeframe, so much has changed, using acrylics (was a hardcore humbrol enamels), learning to airbrush, am big into full interior builds now. I very recently purchased a good set of goggles with interchangeable vision options which is a complete game changer. Also, a photo etched (PE) parts are becoming more common I purchased, after many errors, a decent PE bender, also a game changer. It's a great hobby which is so much more of a pleasure if one follows your list and my humble additions if need be

I'm a very experienced modeller, but there was a few new things in that for me (stuck in old habits), so great job. I've been exploring oils for 1/12 figure faces, but conveniently they're good for weathering too, so I'd definitely be interested in the oil colour vid - currently I play and see where that takes me, so some supporting science would be great!

Good to know I didn't upset many of you older and wiser modellers then! Yes, I prefer oils for larger figures, base painting in acrylic or lacquer. I just find it easier to get blends and control the colours with them - did a Young Miniatures Dunkirk bust a year or so ago this way. I'll be working on that oil video soon...ish! Cheers Chris

All great advice but one thing I would add is that if you are going to to airbrushing you really need to get a respirator mask or spray booth to protect your health. Unless you live somewhere where you can spray outdoors, of course. On the subject of eyesight I have a pair of “office view” prescription specs. These are intended for looking at computer screens etc. and work very well for close modelling work. Additionally I have a headband magnifier which is very useful when handling particularly small parts. What Chris says about good lighting is absolutely essential. Whilst I generally agree with what he says about colour matching I would say don’t get too intense about this. It’s a real rabbit hole that you can get trapped in. Unless you are entering competitions or doing RU-vid videos as long as you are happy with your finished model that’s all that matters.
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 2 года назад
Thanks Ian - I agree on the colour matching too - but it is frustrating that not all kits have a good table of choices! I have done a separate guide to how to airbrush lacquers, and the first thing I mention is spray booth and respirator. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jUglkMKxd8c.html

I've personally been very appreciative of mr white putty, a lacquer based putty by GSI/Mr hobby that otherwise handles similarly to most hobby putties but with the lacquer benefits of fast drying, doesn't crumble so fast, etc. Smell is also very minimal for a lacquer, I guess because there's little thinners in there. @@beckersmodels Hi Chris i think the dissolved putty is the same putty but thinned with a mild lacquer thinner. A lot of it. The white putty is more of a paste and better suited for most situations imo. Dissolved is too thin
@hoppy5631

Thanks Chris, some great advice. I'm a life long modeller with gaps(35yrs) in the middle. The hobby has changed a lot with technology. At the moment I'm using Tamiya white and Vallejo Plastic Putty. I have used Glaze as you do, but found it brittle(wouldn't hold an edge), maybe it was the brand. I'm going to check out some of the different putty's mentioned. I'm a bit tentative with weathering... not wanting to screw up many hours of work, so like others, I would love a video on colour as well as mixing oil colours for weathering. Do you have any tips for painting faces/flesh tones?
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 2 года назад
Thanks Hoppy, great comment. My go to advice for weathering is only try one technique per finished model. Chipping. or Streaking. Or fading. etc. not all at a go! It takes time to learn, you can quicken this by using that old sheet of styrene, cut it into four or six pieces and go to town on that. I'm not that good a figure painter, I've done a bust or two and pilots of course - I prefer to base paint using Tamiya Flesh, then use oils to work out the tones. Check out "Figuring it out" on Facebook run by my friend Aaron - they use oils a lot for figures and have great advice there...cheers Chris

I'm certainly not a new modeler, however things have changed a LOT since I was even a teenager. I used to only use enamel since that's what my old model shop supplier had. Now that model shop has closed down, and it seems everyone is using acrylic, artists oils, primers in various forms, floor polish, inks, all with their own special thinners and there are several different brands, all with various reviews from shit garbage to divine perfection. It's... Difficult to sort out sometimes.

I disagree on your comment about the tube glue. As with all applications....there is a place for tube glue and having another option in your toolbox is always best. The old tube glues got a bad rap because modelers tend to use TOO much - and that creates a mess ! More is not better - and when used correctly - it can be a very good solution. I also use the bottles with the brush - they are good too.
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 2 года назад
Its not appropriate for beginners because of the lack of skill they have in applying something that is unwieldy and takes too long to go off. As I said, using the Revell Contacta or Tamiya Cement is a better compromise, but nothing really beats TET/MEK style solvents....
