Part 1: • Changes in the pipe wo...
Part 2: • The Journey of a Pipe ...
Rick Newcombe, author of In Search of Pipe Dreams and Still Searching for Pipe Dreams, came down to the workshop to visit and sit for a conversation about pipes and the pipe community. This is the third of three parts of the conversation.
In this conversation, Rick and I discuss some of the pipes that he brought to my workshop for us to look at and restore. His appreciation for fine briars is unique in that he doesn't limit the collection based on region, maker, finish, or shape. Instead, he is of the opinion that a well made pipe should perform well--whether it came from a factory or an artisan's workshop. We take a look at work from Ken Barnes of James Upshall Pipes, Jess Chonowitsch, Sixten Ivarsson, S. Bang, and even some of my own J. Alan Pipes.
Watch the first part of our conversation here: • The Journey of a Pipe ...

What a pleasure to spend a little time with my friends. As you said in the first episode, its the community and relationships we have that make pipes and tobacco so rewarding. Without really knowing it, I discovered buying and smoking pipes from makers I actually knew made all the difference in my enjoyment. They became my friends and I feel connected with them every time I look at, hold or smoke those pipes. So needless to say I miss those friends even though I still see them thru their work and my remembrances of our times together. How wonderful to see and hear you and Rick. Thanks.

Matt, so good to see your response to this. You've tapped into what attracted and kept so many of us in the hobby. Can't wait to see you just as soon as the show circuit starts up again.

I guess I need to go buy his latest book now since I have his other 2. I had a great and relaxing stress free time watching this little series of videos while smoking my pipe! Thank you so much!

So great, thanks for hosting him. I've never been a "collector" of things, I've come close with surfboards but it's always been about the toys. Perfect analogy really.

No matter how old we get, we still need our toys. The beauty of pipes is they take up so little space in comparison to other collections like surfboards (I'm guilty here too), cars, etc.

Thank you so much for this series! I own Rick's books. Hopefully more to come. I had the distinct pleasure of being able to work at Faders in '79 or '80 when in undergrad.. Ahh, the memories! And someday, maybe a J. Alan will grace my rack! Thank you again, for this.

Again, Thank You!! What I look for in a pipe is the size of the bowl (Dunhill group 3-4), there is a smooth transition between the shank & stem, thickness of the bowl & of course the drilling of the draft hole. Well thanks again & I’m enjoying “Pipe Dream”. Cheers, Art

One of the great things is narrowing your 'likes' so that you can search within those boundaries. Keep on puffing!
