@@ale4462 You tell me, did immersion really help you develop your English when you were a toddler? Did you invent this language? You also had poor vocabulary as a baby, to ask if immersion really helps is like asking would food help me not starve to death.
How long did it take for you to actually understand more and more of whats being said in japanese content? I still understand nothing, only a few words.
@@user-wu7mo1fw8m It took one year and I was barely even immersing more 2 hours. I did read a lot and was mostly listening as passive immersion after watching a show with subs.
@@user-wu7mo1fw8m That's a good question. I would say I'm at a point where watching a raw slice of life anime is relatively easy with some i+1 sentences popping up here and there but I'm definitely not at the sufficient level to watch SF shows like Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion.
Seriously Matt, there is seriously something soothing about hearing a good Japanese accent from you while wanting to immerse, yet nearly everything being understandable. I really hope to hear more Japanese interviews from you in the future.
I found is easy to listen foreigners or half ones who speak great Japanese than native Japanese , I listen too Brian Channel and Monster John TV , easy to listen , I can hear words and sentences.

I found myself not exactly caring or realizing that they switched to English, it was the message I was consuming. That is how you know it’s compelling input.
Man I can relate so hard to the whole "having ignored my own culture" part, like you yeah I still live here in Quebec, but since I've been 12 years old (and I'm now about to turn 26), I've been basically ignoring my own culture to follow more of an "english" culture (english side of canada and america), and now with japanese, I feel like I know nothing about what has happened in Quebec for literally over half of my life haha. As an adult it has become more painfully obvious as I entered the "working" world and now have to try and keep conversations with family who dont speak any english whatsoever, and man it is SO hard. I will 100% have to spend some time "after" japanese to go and reconnect with my own culture and try and update my french too so I can at least express myself somewhat decently.

@@p.hhenry4454 C'est très, très triste mon gars... Coming from an allophone, please make an effort to support your own fascinating culture. It's so unique and honestly so much nicer and more humane than the values encoded in English and passed down across the border and in some parts of English-speaking Canada. My biggest fear living here is to end up being surrounded by anglos with a mindset similar to Torontonians, who think that Netflix garbage is the pinnacle of culture, network 24/7 instead of trying to establish genuine relations - or at least understand what it means - and increasingly resort to and glorify gun violence. You may not realize it, but languages encode cultures and, according to research, Quebecers are a very unique and peculiar mix of Nordic and Latin traits, characterized by open-heartedness, easygoingness and love for children on the one hand and a sense of social obligation and community on the other. Even the anglos that live here so far have been under the influence of this culture and, according to studies, are not like the rest of English-speaking Canada. And by God does Canada need those qualities a lot in the same way Americans need the Latin spirit of Mexicans to be a little less unidimensional workaholics and a little more... real and a little less destructive to themselves and the rest of the world.
@@Limemill J'aurais pas su mieux dire, pis vraiment intéressant en passant la notion du mélange nordique et latin, j'y avais jamais pensé. Pour ce qui en est de l'attrait de l'anglais, j'ai l'impression qu'une bonne part de la musique et du divertissement soit youtube, tik tok, twitch, ou jeux-vidéos étant en anglais, ça crée une fracture. Le français peut être inconsciemment ou consciemment perçu comme quelque chose de banale tandis que l'anglais est ''dynamique'', relié à la nouveauté, la culture internet et au divertissement.
I’m a half Japanese half white American who grew up in Tokyo and I can resonate with Everton about “being teased but not being bullied”. When Ives’s in elementary school all of my friends knew my parents and visa versa so people “knew” me and didn’t face bullying. When I moved to a different area for middle school it was a bit weird because my mom started working full time and my parents were divorced (dad didn’t live with me) and people at school couldn’t connect the dots so I did experience a bit of bullying for a couple months when I first moved, but it calmed down as time went by

That's so rare. I guess that Everson is an exception. Having said that, probably Everson's way of thinking would be affected or changed by depends on how he precesses his thinking in Japanese or English.
I am very much looking forward to you going to Japan, I really hope you film it. Do you have any ideas as to what you might do there? (if you go for an extended period). I was going to go this year but corona happened, kinda relieved because I only started speaking practice about a month ago lol Very interesting interview btw, I'll have to check out this Everson guy's videos too.
Great interview and it was really weird watching two white guys speaking fluent natural sounding Japanese to each other. And it was also weird when you switched to English. I had to say that I also am a little self conscious about spending so much time on foreign languages that I miss stuff like game of thrones. When you get down to it though, in my free time, I’d rather be geeking out over something in Japanese (or now maybe Korean).
This is a really awesome exchange. I don't speak Japanese, but I can see the hard work and dedication. I only speak Arabic and Polish as L2 and L3 languages.
Some of these comments are rude. I have a Japanese friend and NEVER criticize his English. He appreciates when he learns an American phrase. I'm trying to learn Hebrew and my American friends appreciate the little bit that I know. My Israeli friend laughed when I spoke to him in Hebrew, but he was very supportive. For our host to learn a completely different language than English is a milestone! Amazing 👏
It's probably the pacing, you'll get used to it. I've been going through a vocab deck recently and found the soeaking in it so fast because I'm used to anime where the pace is slower. Like there were sentence where I knew all the words, surprisingly for me, but it was just too fast for me to recognize them, but now, after almost a month of using that deck and going through like 700 cards, I can easily hear what is said, even if there are new words I don't know.
5 minutes into the video, I'm kinda surprised at how much he says えっと。。。 I personally try to avoid those filler words in all my languages (although you can't fully avoid them) What do you guys think about filler words ?
It might come off unprofessional to some people in formal environments, but it seems like (especially in Japan) it's not really a big deal. In terms of learning a language, I also feel that adapting little things like that is important for speaking casually with people and is a sign that you are intuitively grasping the language when you accidentally start doing them.
It feels like japanese people use filler words all the time, even more than in English. Especially casually. I feel like they usually like to fill the conversation space too (like listeners saying はい or affirming often while someone else is talking). I think you should learn them and use them and that (in my very limited experience) it feels japanese to use a lot of filler words.
So many あるある in this video man: ①Living in ur artificial Japanese bubble for 5 years, and coming out and not knowing game of thrones, breaking bad, black mirror, narcos, orange is the new black, criminal minds, friends, the mentalist, on and on... (I spent the last year catching up on everything - also for English's sake) ②I remember there was a girl who's like so u're here for a vacation, and I replied いや、もうずっとここにいるよ。。and she's like なんだ、日本語喋れるんだ＊がっかり感＊ ③ relating to ① when in the bubble, people wud see u as this weird guy.. although many wud be interested in knowing what the heck ur doing with ur life.. and be like.. ahh.. okay.. that sounds intense and good for you my man! did get called crazy a bunch of times too..
At about 15:30 when they're in English mode, Matt says that he had a bit of a コンプレックス, as they say in Japanese. We have a word for that in English too 😬 Tho maybe the nuance is a bit different? I've heard it in Japanese and seems to be largely the same at first glance.
The English word "complex" is pretty different than the Japanese counterpart. The way it's used in Japanese is more like "something you're self-conscious about".
@@mattvsjapan Hmmm. The English word "complex" carries that meaning too. For example, to describe a boy who is self-conscious about his short stature, you can say "He has a complex about his height". I'd say the difference is that the Japanese コンプレックス has only this meaning while the English "complex" has several distinct and unrelated meanings.
Really good, actually. Probably one of the most impressive things about Matt is how closely he pronounces most words in a near-native way, even if his grammar has oddities here and there.
I got to say, Everson's English is excellent! LOL I kid...a little bit. This guy basically has two native languages and it's really interesting to see how two incredibly different cultures mold together into one individual. Also Matt, if you're not a hafu, then maybe you were Japanese in a past existence.

At 15:27, Matt says he had almost a complex about it, but he says the Japanese version of it. Made me wonder if that tied into what he was talking about with not being able to express himself in English. Would be pretty crazy if he only knows that word in Japanese, but doesn't know about "having a complex" in English. Or he just meant something else, idk
Matts Japanese is flawless . Although young his Japanese japanese is of a 40 year oldstiff business nature. May be wrong but something dark and off about his character . But thats not to take anything away from his Japanese. With that said no vocabulary words over the 5th grade level are used in petfect pitch and intonation .
your comment might sound stupid but guess that's true, i'm not a japanese speaker or learner but i watched steven kofman's interview with matt and he said the exact same thing that he's had the best japanese among the speakers Despite not being able to speak and understand japanese i guess you're right, matt's japanese has a better refinement than everson's, but you know what, if we're able to express ourselves in the language, that has more weight than having a perfect accent.
