Talks with David Godman, Part 7: Bhagavan's Teachings in the Modern World

In August 2018 I was interviewed on my roof by Jussi Penttinen, a Finnish devotee who in recent times has been responsible for collating and uploading the subtitles that appear in many different languages on my RU-vid channel. Jussi filmed his questions separately while he was standing on the Arunachala pradakshina road. During the talks he was accompanied by his friend Jukka Korhonen who filmed the replies and later edited the films. Thanks to both of them.

David, the ease with which you distill the complex into simple is unparalleled. Cannot thank you enough for such lucid talks. Ever grateful and indebted to you for demystifying the path of self enquiry. Hearing you speak, it almost feels like iam quite close to realising the self! I hope for divine intervention & Bhagwan's blessings to fulfilling this life's purpose sooner than later. Thank you David Godman and all who helped create and post these videos. Seeing Arunachala in the back ground is a true delight. I was there in 2016 and long to return. And then I remember, "The best course is to remain silent" and "All that is required to realize the Self is to Be Still." I liked your story asking for 200 pounds if you were to go to Tiruvanamali...and how it actually showed up! :-)

When you were at Arunachala, was it thrashed like it is on Google Earth? For one of the holiest places in India they sure don't treat it well. Check it out. They have graffiti all over the rocks and trash everywhere. Disgusting!

I always look at the comments to see if anyone else is struggling with staying with the self? I feel so much guilt when I realize I've only been able to turn my mind inward for just brief periods of time, then I realize that my ego has been going through most of my day everyday. everyone seems like they've all got it and everything is beautiful. this video helped a lot to ease some of that guilt.
@Hexhex66
@Hexhex66 2 года назад
Everybody here, who‘s not yet fully awakened, probably struggles with being constantly distracted of being aware of the self. There’s no need to feel guilty about that. On the contrary: Guilt and regret are hindrances on the path to awakening. Let go of these feelings. Guilt has got no substance. We can only act as our level of consciousness allows. And everytime you remember the self, you do a precious and important step forward to full self realization.

One of the best advice for those who are interested, beginners or confused about spirituality and the purpose of life. If those who listen to this are convinced about what is said here and I am sure they will pick up one of the best books by David godman " Be as you are " and read it again and again till they get what they want. I am one of the followers of the method suggested here and I love the suggestion ❤

These rooftop talks have proven to be very beneficial for me. My circumstances have formed in such a way that I have nothing but time to realize my true Self. I have caught glimpses of it that has lasted for days but the "I" thought usually comes back at some point but if I wait in time it disappears again and I realize the person of the heart that is the source and is one with everything. Is that the Self? Thank you Mr. Godman.

Hello, David. Many thanks for your continued allegiance to the Maharshi; your contributions are essential to whatever progress I may make on the path. I have an important question which has been festering for a few years. To cut to the point. A Hindjew teacher of mine surprised me in a dialogue in which I had spoken about my desire to not be reincarnated and to attain moksha, which I thought was a good thing, rock-solid in a world of uncertainty. He came back with saying that this too is a desire and it will likely lead me back to reincarnate in this world. That is, this very intention will have the opposite effect. Something like, the more you don't want it, the more surely it will come, that it too is a desire. I have not been able to come to a decision on this, as it is outside of anyone's actual knowledge. You know every word the Maharshi ever spoke, or pretty close; could you weigh in on this critical question, based on his teaching? Should I just resign myself to accept whatever happens, abandoning what I had thought for so long to be a good intention, to have resolve to escape the wheel of cruel births and deaths? Can I have been wrong about this for so many years? Will my desire to escape it actually bind me more tightly to it? How would I ever learn this lesson in reality, given how impossible it would be to see how this operates? Should one love life? If so, why the teaching of transcending the wheel of birth?

@dineshkaul
@dineshkaul 4 года назад
One cannot expect to resign oneself to one's fate or destiny. Even that is a concious karma and is binding. Anything one does or chooses not to do, is karma and binding. Who is to say which karma or action is binding more and which less. This is too much of analysis. Too much intellect in there. Let's just do it. Our efforts, meditation, japas, or whatever. Efforts to realization just cannot go waste. Your self will with greater clarity of your practices, show you the way.

The fundamental question one has to ask himself/herself is, did I exist before the birth ? Will I continue to exist after the death ? Is my conscious is time bound (between birth and death) or eternal ? Am I an entity different from the nature or extension of the nature (or part of the nature) ? Answers to these questions bring calmness in mind, brings peace. A mind at peace can only spread love and bliss to all the beings, not just human beings. The earlier this realisation comes, more meaningful the life would be when you look back at the time of death.

Ramana Maharshi admitted that the Mind has to be used to "kill" the mind - the Sattva state of light needs to be used to transcend the light. The Self is not the light but rather the Ether that creates the light.

another interesting in my opinion topic for a question would be the role and value of ethics in Ramana Maharshi's teaching because i personally haven't noticed that he was an ethicist
@imspatial4151
@imspatial4151 6 лет назад
I think ethics only comes into play when you see and treat others as, well - others. There is only the Self. Kindness is the natural state, with a few moments of teaching that can be direct tied in. I have felt this myself - the quiet, all pervasive peace in which nothing can disturb. Even cruel ones have no effect there.
@ARE_YOU_SICK_OF_YT_CENSORSHIP
@ARE_YOU_SICK_OF_YT_CENSORSHIP 6 лет назад
that's true for a realized person and from the perspective of the absolute truth, but all the rest, mere worldlings plagued by ignorance still need some form of ethics and i'm completely not sure that a vile and evil person could get awakened by simply doing self-inquiry or devotion practice without changing their behavior, thinking and attitudes what also is unclear is Ramana's stance on karma and rebirth, if he recognized them, then ethics would be indispensable as a means to improve future incarnations
@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885
@voidisyinyangvoidisyinyang885 5 лет назад
@@ARE_YOU_SICK_OF_YT_CENSORSHIP he would just say - ask yourself who is thinking those thoughts - as he said about Einstein's relativity: There is no Observer.
