Wow crazy you can actually hear a big difference in these drums, I actually guessed all of them right in the blind test because each one of them has there own character, very great drums, never switching to another brand

Been looking for this comparison!! Great job guys! It seals the deal for me - the Hyperdrives! They just inspire me and the differences between them are minimal. I thought the kick on the Hyperdrive was the best of all of them and the toms matched up almost identically with the Starclassic and Maple one's. Not much of a noticeable difference in the toms at all. Thanks for doing this!!

The video is really great!!!! I love how much work you guys have put into making it! I own a starclassic maple and now I feel reassured of having invested that more money... it has that little extra high end touch that the hyperdrive does not offer. The starclassic performer is a professional sounding kit but there is some more depth and warmth to the tone of maple that the woods of the b/b just don't have. But as I said: Great video!!!!

Fantastic Video. I found it to very informative. I also thought that you outdid yourselves in terms of your setup, you kept everything tuned similar and used the same setup on all the kits, I found that alone helped to truly show the difference of the kits. Keep up the excellent work. I certainly look forward to watching more of your videos. For the record I own a superstar hyperdrive 7 Piece kit and thought that the Starclassic Performer B/B had far superior lower end sound to it and I would certainly make the move based on that alone as it would certainly create a far wider range of sounds which can of course help to improve the range and genre's I could play.

You have done a great job trying to help others determine which kit corresponds to their personal taste. The result is interesting because it clearly shows that the difference between the 3 sets are indeed very little. Personally I am very fond of the maple kit and the performer kit. If I would have to choose it will be either of these kits maple or birch/bubinga.

Awesome video! I'm looking at getting a Starclassic Bubinga, so hearing the tonal difference of the B/B between the others gives me a pretty rough idea at least of what to expect. The B/B is my favorite out of these three!
@that-avr-drummer
@that-avr-drummer 5 лет назад
Just an fyi for ya, I had a starclassic Bubinga and got rid of it because the tuning rods were coming loose like crazy, particularly on the kick. I later found out that 100% Bubinga shells vibrate a lot more, so you need to either tighten the heads more than you normally would on say Maple, or, get some sort of lug lock. I thought the lugs were defective....apparently I was wrong LOL

Already having several kits, I find that if I were to buy another, it would have to be the maple. I've being getting the less expensive kits trying, various tunings and different heads with limited results. The Tama maple kit has the sound you CAN'T make the others have no matter what you do to them. I personally believe you can't find a better sounding kit than the Starclassic Maple Exotic at any price, at this time. If you have to have that sound, save up your money and buy what you need to get it the first time. I could've bought two by now and saved a lot in the long run. Thanks for the very well done video. It confirms my decision and Ill be saving my money till I can afford them.

I have a Superstar Hyper-Drive kit and have thought about upgrading to a B/B Performer kit in hyper sizes or standard if I could get a 20" bass as I like the lower positioning that the hyper toms allow. However, after watching this video the two hyperdrive sized kits sound almost indistinguishable from one another and they both sound great. I think that because they sound almost identical, it really comes down to hardware quality. The floor tom legs and brackets and bass spurs on the StarClassics are in fact better than the Superstar but maybe not so better as to justify spending $1,000 more. I've also heard a few complaints about the Superstar bass spurs. -- Obviously the rims are all the same, but the Starcast mounts of the newer StarClassics look more high-end with their curves and matched plating on aluminum mounts rather than the older steel type which the Superstars have (and older StarClassics have). Lastly, it's no surprise why Tama discontinued the Superstar hyperdrive birch kits in 2014 as they are so very close in sound and quality to the B/B kits. Overall in this video, the birch SS and Starclassic B/B sound a little more dry and focused while the Maple seems to resonate a little more and has more sustain. However, that could also be because the maple toms are 1.5" deeper than the Hyper-Drives. So what I think this proves a lot is that if you have a good kit (of any hardwood) a lot of it comes down to shell depths, head selection, and proper tuning. - Thanks for making this video. You guys certainly did it right!

Mate, very cool video. Made it easy for me to decide on the Hyperdrive. I'm a basher and the admittedly more polished sounds from the more expensive kits would be wasted on me. Well done sir.

What snare was being used with the Starclassic Performer B/B? I only know that it's a 14x5.5. It sounds killer, and it sounds like a metal snare, not a matched Birch/Bubinga snare.

Great video. I think I am going to buy a Superstar kit, the sound quality:price ratio is pretty amazing. I notice a big difference in the sound of the Superstar bass drum, compared with the others in your recording. What do you attribute that to? It has much less focus, in my opinion. Cheers!

Great job on this vid, very well done and would be informative if I was shopping for a kit. Presently; I have a B&B kit and liked them from the blind test (glad I don't have to spend more $ now!). I used the same tom heads until recently changing the 8" & 10" tom batters to G1 coated for a touch more sustain in just the two smaller toms. Tried one on the 12", but put the G2c back on. The rest are perfect. - Love me some SC B&B's! Thank You for your hard work, and excellent playing!

I own a Starclassic maple since 2004 and I recognized it's sound on the blindtest which makes me proud ;-) To my ears the Performer and the Superstar toms sound similar, the maple toms sound bigger. However, I like the Performer Bassdrum more. Glad I have the maple though ;-) Thanks for the video, but maybe next time you could just record the natural sound instead of using gates and effects (hall). Or am I wrong?

Thanks for this well-made, very informative video which confirmed my opinion that the Superstar Hyperdrive is a great "high quality for mid-budget" kit. I even think it outruns the Starclassics with its superior price/value ratio. SCs just don't sound "twice as good", as the price would suggest, which is another point your video proved. I own a Superstar Hyperdrive myself, I've recorded two albums with it (the third one's due quite soon), and I've set it up for some thirty gigs with other drummers playing it, too. Everybody always wonders "how big these short toms sound"... ;) Anyway, having watched your video, I would choose the Starclassic Performer B/B as the first alternative to the Superstar - the B/B sounds fantastic here! The SC Maple also sounds good, but doesn't cut it compared to the other two. You did a great job with this video, I'll help spread the message about the wonderful sound these sets produce! Keep up the good work!

@KPG76

I think TAMA Superstar is the best value for money kit, especially if you can skip the hardware (cymbal stands, pedal etc), when you can get a new set with cast hoops and starcast mounting system for less than 700 euros! In this video the sound differences between the sets are so minor that they can be very easily be compensated with mic selection and placement, before even starting to add eq and compression in the studio. That said, there can be a big difference between the recorded sound and the sound you actually hear when you play these sets, especially in terms of volume and explosiveness which cannot be translated by the mics. I wasn 't crazy about any of the snares' tone but again this is highly subjective. I loved the kick sound on the Starclassic Maple. Based on reviews like this I bought a Superstar to use as a recording kit for heavier stuff in my studio and so far I am really happy with the results.

No I dont. At the moment Im tuning with a tunebot and my ear. I only have settings for that. But the values of e.g. the drum dial/tension watch it is a bit related to some physics of the heads. 2ply heads have other readings than single ply.

@MariusSchulte
@MariusSchulte 8 лет назад
Hi, mine come with 2 cymbal stands, a hi-hat stand, a snare stand and a single bass-drum pedal. What I suggest you is to look on the websites of your local stores. Yes it is good for metal and rock, very punchy sound with the right tuning and drumheads.
@Birkzerk
@Birkzerk 8 лет назад
""Ring mufflers on bass drum heads remove the need for extra internal muffling". This is what it says in the specs on this kit on Tama's website, but does this feature work great? Does this feauture work great? Or should an EQ pillow be put inside?

Love this, nice job. I prefer overall the Maple but I think if the B/B was not hyperdrive it would be just as good? Although nothing beats a Maple Bass drum IMO. Unfortunately I think all 3 of these kits come with those wobbly plastic mount holders so no thanks.
@gregk2033
@gregk2033 8 лет назад
I liked the regular birch Hyperdrive snare best but that may be due to short poppy size. What I don't like about the Maple - slow fills are ok, fast fills sound undefined, muddy because of the boominess. So, a maple set sounds better with one or two toms played slow. If you muffle the maple toms to shorten the ringing I think the tone will suffer. What I like about the birch toms is the clarity of stick on head attack, they don't ring out too long. Basses sound similar but the B/B had the best sound in the 2. Comparison double bass demo...again, fast notes are better defined. The B/B belongs is rightfully in he middle of your demo - it seems to be the middle ground balance sound.

Klingt verdammt cool, dann is dess neue Superstar mit Ahorn wohl nix für mich, da mir in eurem Test das Starclassic Maple mit Abstand am wenigsten gefällt.

Hi Mario, I have listen again the video,.... and i think that the performer b/b is more low than the others, but tell me, have you listened to the star bubinga alive?
@MariusSchulte

Hello jesus, i have already played a Tama Starclassic Bubinga kit in my local store but until yet not any Star kit. I think the starclassic bubinga and the star bubinga sound very similar. I like the kit, but I love the Performer B/B even more. Hope that helps, greetz :)

i think b/b for snare and toms and maple for kick does it for me! edit: maple kick for slower stuff, for faster pattern it might be too warm

Hey, great video, gives a great comparison between the kits but I just have a quick question about the Superstar Hyperdrive. Was it the Superstar Custom Hyperdrive which is Birch, or was it The Superstar Hyperdrive which is Maple. I'm fairly sure it was the Maple one but I thought I'd check just in case I was wrong. Great video though man :-)

+William Wheeler Hey, no. I bought mine back in 2011 and it's made of birch. :)
@Billaton171
@Billaton171 8 лет назад
+Marius Schulte Oh really? The birch model is cheaper and it's the one I like most in this video so brilliant! Thank you!
@oldowl4290
@oldowl4290 8 лет назад
+William Wheeler Yeah, they just came out with the Maple kits in Q1 of 2015 and are mostly only available in Europe. I have the 2014 birch kit as well and they can now be had a little cheaper, likely under $1000 for a full 6pc or 7pc kit. They are both great hardwoods. Birch is a little more focused while Maple is a little more open and resonant. But in this video also take note that the Maple toms are a little deeper which likely contributes to the longer sustain over the shorter hyper toms of the Superstar Birch and Starclassic B/B.

being 30% cheaper, the BB performers seems to be the way to go, i had an artstar custom kit for 12 years, a huge 7 piece. Now im looking for maple but i can't make up my mind other than so far im leaning twords the b/b

You can really hear those maple shells sing compared to the others. Definitely don't need muffling on the two hyperdrive sets.

I have a 94 Starclassic maple and I like all of them but the maple just sings a little bit more and would be my choice. Some don't like the longer ringing of the maple but that can be fixed easy. I have 2 Yamaha recording customs and they give my maple a run for their money.

If i had the money,offcourse I would buy the high end kit. But exactly like you said. For the money and what you get for it, definetly the winner is the Superstar Hyperdrive. I almost bought one, but it was 200 euro's more than my Pearl Vision birch. Plus the Pearl kit had a really nice ruby fade finish which I liked a lot more than the standard white color with black hardware of the Hyperdrive kit. The sound of the recording sounds great like all your video's. Very nice playing and video. I have a request, when you have the time can you do a cover of Miss May I's Refuse to Believe? Or else something from Asking Alexandria or August Burns Red?

So, Does the mix of birch and bubinga make a result of better low end, and sustain, of course with the right heads, maybe the emps.? But why is the star bubinga so expensive?

Tama builds some really great drums and may I say at everybody's budget.Dont be fooled by the price tag on the lower end kits,They sound great live.Ive used a silver star all birch kit that was amazing. Also a super star maple kit as well.Even with the cheaper suspension mounts,and hoops they come with they resonate and hold there tunning very vell.I wish when I was starting out some 50 years ago that they were available then. You don't have to break the bank for a nice kit.My hats off to Tama drums.

i think the Superstar Hyperdrive is the best sounded kit but with the bass drum from B/B kit.You made a mistake here to set not similar snare dimension to Maple kit.
@MariusSchulte
@MariusSchulte 6 лет назад
Mistake? - We used the equipment we own,and thats his snare. We havent had the right one. Also the maple kit is often sold without snare.

i could only hear small differences between each kit each sounded great and the superstar probably came out best. I always think in a live band situation most people cannot tell the difference between cheaper and expensive kits. Alot of brand/cost snobbery involved. great vid.
@MariusSchulte
@MariusSchulte 7 лет назад
David Jones the biggest differences are if you hava a decent kit like 500$+ is tuning followed by how how you hit the drums.
@nandoprogger
@nandoprogger 8 лет назад
Acredito que que a hyperdrive ganhou da b/b devido à profundida dos tons, dando mais ataque; talvez ficasse semelhante com relação a afinação mais alta; no mais, há uma nítida diferença entre a de maple entre as demais. Maple sempre

My goodness listen to those superstar toms. Hey im sorry, and ive been playing drums for 30 yrs, but the toms on that superstar kit sounds just as good as those exoti bubingabbn panola gringo walnut shells do any day of the week. Now the bass drum mightve been a difference. Overall tho, for at least a thousand dollars less , the superstar kit is a better investment. I m actually blown away by how good thst superstar kit sounds and for what, $799 or something. Unbelievable.
@MariusSchulte
@MariusSchulte 4 года назад
yes indeed. maybe only experts hear a difference. But playing, tuning and head combinations are way more important then the kit itself.
@jacobwalker9912
@jacobwalker9912 4 года назад
@@MariusSchulte yes youre right. I do agree. Normally i use coated ambssadors top/ clear amb bottom. But on the kit ive got now ,which is maple, i tried using emperors for a change. The emperor choked out my 8" tom so i went back to coated amb. For my 10" and 12" the emperors are working great. Nice warm, deep resonant sound. Then on my 14" and 16" i switched to clear Ambassadors for a little more clarity. This is the first time ive mixed heads like this but everything is nice and balanced. Those bubinga Tamas do sound incredible. I was just really surprised by the sound of those Superstars considering the price tag on those things. Professional drums for $800 for sure.

@deadlikejuliet1284
@deadlikejuliet1284 6 лет назад
The comparisons should've been done always by the same drummer. Most of the sound is coming from there, you both have very different playing styles (how hard you hit each of the drums). It makes it a lot harder to compare sustain/punch/sound in general of the drum sets. Plus the tuning is different too.
