Tama Velo Glide vs. Lever Glide Hi-Hat Comparison

The "Velo Glide" is a standard direct pull mechanism. The "Lever Glide" is a strap that pulls a lever, rotating a cam which then pulls the shaft. Basically, the Level Glide is smoother, with more even pressure the whole stroke, and bottoms out slower so it is more sensitive. You can control the pressure easier with the Lever Glide, but it is harder to get a quick foot click. If you play rock, that might be good for you, since you play the hats with your sticks 99.99% of the time and it is easier to control the "sloshy" sound with your foot. If you play the hi-hats more with your foot, like in Jazz, the Velo Glide is quicker and faster for making foot-clicks.

You're the only one I could find (shockingly) that covered this topic that I needed advice on! Also, I talked to my Sweetwater rep and he said that Tama is discontinuing the Velo Glide hi-hats as he tried to order me one...Which is a shame bc I have the Lever Glide and arguably do not like it in comparison. I would have thought that the Velo Glide would have been more popular!

Hey thanks for taking the time to post this. I use a Pearl block and tackle hi hat and I just dig it. I also just recently got a 5000 DW which is direct pull and that thing just doesn't even comepare to the Pearl linkage so now this DW pedal is going to get a similar lever but the fulcrum will come from a chain at the bottom of the stand. Should be cool. I never knew TAMA had this.

Thank You, exact the information I needed. Have a Iron Cobra HH905D, feels too sloppy for me, especially with funky Hihat Openings, these are not precisely, thought about harder springs, but I think the HH805D will work better for me. THANKS

Crucial bit of info that should come as no surprise to anyone here. The strap WILL eventually break. I’ve broken 2 so far (one speed cobra & one iron cobra) both within 3 years of purchase. My 2 Tama chain drive hi-hat stands have lasted years (one 20 years and the other 6). To me this makes it an inexcusable design flaw.

I'm thinking of buying the Lever Hi Hat stand and that's my biggest fear. I've googled it quite a bit and only found people praising the Kevlar system. Would you say that if one's looking for the higher sensitivity, it might be worth the 3 year usage? Furthermore, was it hard and/or expensive to replace the strap?

@@diogotabreu It really does have a great feel. My recommendation would be to purchase it from a place that offers extended coverage if possible. I don’t remember the kick pedal strap being difficult to replace. I haven’t tackled the hi hat strap replacement yet. Frankly annoyed to even have to since this problem seems predictable and therefor avoidable from a design standpoint. It seems to me that the connection made by the Kevlar strap could also be made by a chain or a solid metal link. Hope this helps!

@@philipcullin983 thank you so much for your reply! I 100% agree with you. I guess I’ll try both (chain and lever) and see if there’s a significant difference. If not, I think I’ll go with the metal chain. Thank you once more for taking the time to reply!

...5 years later. Thank you, my same concerns. I'd be curious to know if some of the slowness or harder work comes from the long board more than the mechanism. I've had those issues with long boards in general and stopped using them. Thanks!

Probably because velo is associated with bicycle, and it has a chain, and no lever. Velo is not a new word. Pronounced like 'vello'
