Here's a quick guide to playing tambora with the right hand thumb.
I have asked an expert in guitar percussion to do a detailed lesson for me, I'm hoping this will be available later this year.

I'm learning 'Stay' by Alfonso Montes and there's a full 6 string chord tambora in the last bar.

The piece that I found out about this technique from was Intermezzo - B from Takeshi Yoshimatsu's "Water Color Scalar"

@@davidjaggs My suggestion, would be to show how you practice / achieve the ability to play 2 pieces of musik at once, with your non thumb fingers. Like in your arrangement of "You got a friend", there are many times where you play the melody (1 piece of music, tone and rhythm) and also you play a theme over the chord (with different tones and rhythm). I don't care to much about the thumb doing the base work, that's more common (even I can do that ;) )

@@martinrosschou it's a tricky question to answer. . I think it's a question of tackling harder pieces gradually over time. The hands learn more and more complex movements.. I suppose this creates an illusion of different parts but it all comes from the same hands.. I think! Hope this helps. Basically it all takes time.

Interesting tutorial David. I'm sure I've heard Bream play a Lobos piece that used this, but can't for the life of me think which one or maybe it's someone else. It's another 👍 from me.

I am able to get a relatively decent sound with the tambora on the bass strings, but am struggling with the treble. What would you suggest I try?

Try experimenting with distance from the bridge, the speed of the strike, make sure you are striking with the right part of the thumb, move the thumb nearer the floor for the trebles. Hope that helps 😃

@@davidjaggs there is another percussive technique in that piece. The classical guitar sounds like a snare drum. Was wondering if you could do a video tutorial on it?
