Taming the country, Cape York Peninsula 🤠🗺️ | Bush Tucker Man | S3 EP8 | ABC Australia

Les Hiddins travels to Cape York Peninsula in a manner that contrasts strongly with the cumbersome expedition led by Edmund Kennedy. He shows how a seemingly inhospitable environment can be used to one's advantage.
'Bush Tucker Man: Into the Vilest Country' originally aired on the ABC in 1996.

It's a pity that this is the end. It's been a wonderful time for me with those three seasons of Bush Tucker Man. I went back to my childhood dreams of living in an Australian outback, which was so strange that I was born and raised in a city of 2 million people in Central Europe (Poland). I was able to visit Australia once, although for a month only. During this time me and my wife visited Victoria and Tasmania in a campervan. Someday I'd like to go back and do a 4x4 trip to Cape York (respecting nature of course) for example. It would be great. But now I live on my farm and watch the war in Ukraine, less than a thousand kilometers from the border of my country so far. Hope this nightmare would over as soon as possible.

Awesome doco,... how important is it to continue 'burning off' of dry undergrowth, so crucial to the survival of the Aussie bush..

Ran across this series on RU-vid a few year ago. A great bit of knowledge recorded for future reference if needed. Also a well done bit as Lee Hiddins is a very personable guy on camera. Thank you Lee.

23:42 I couldn't take my eyes off that croc water while Les had his back turned away like that, now of course we all know if a croc was dumb enough to mess with the major it's as good as the croc signing it's own death warrant, I can see Les applying a few lightening fast Liverpool kisses (headbutts) to soften up the rude reptile before finishing the beast off with a devestating Cornish flying mare landing the rascal on the propeller blades... still pretty freaky to be that close to where those big ass Crocs lurk while turned away like that.

I passed Les at Black Mountain on my way to Cooktown once. He was heading west and I east. Anyway, I watched him on ABC when it first came out. Today The Cape is full of rubbish, toilet paper and beer cans. It's now the true Tip.

Was Weymouth Bay named after the ship Weymouth? My ancestors travelled on the Weymouth to South Africa in 1820, and were 26:50 put ashore at what is now Port Elizabeth (new 26:50 (new name Gheberha).

It’s actually an Akubra sombrero, he bashed or shaped it into that style himself which apparently was a common enough style up in Queensland . Akubra is an Australian hat maker manufacturing an array of quality rabbit fur felt hats since the 1800s. They also do as mentioned above make the Australian military defence force slouch hat.

The English exploring with ponies and massive supplies is now rather comical. Just as in the North Pole exploration, the English were totally out of their depth and had to shoot their ponies as they were useless in those climates. Tragic for the ponies. And often the English paid with their lives for their one dimensional view of exploration. Arrogance? Naivety? But at the same time, the English were constantly exploring....one has to admire the lust for exploration.
