Hear's the thing. Having come from the railway modelling background where, for a long time the varnish of choice was Johnsons Klear, you use whaterer works for you. Our hobby should be for enjoyment not a competetive sport. It should embrace experimentation, new ideas, acknowledge tried and tested methods. We should share our ideas, encourage one another, help one another. What we should not be is dogmatic. God preserve us from the rivit counters!

Very interesting and unique camouflage that I knew of courtesy Tiger 131 at Bovington but never researched or considered painting a model, up until now. Your work has given me the thought of trying this on a kit of my own. I really like your work with different weathering mediums. I am starting to see the potential of oils and the flexibility they offer.

Awesome video - always wondered how the "greenish" color on Tiger 131 was applied in that faded look. Always thought that it was the Dunkel Grun mixed with a lot of fuel of some sort which gave it that faded or lighter look. Kind of like the crew just did not have enough paint to do the job so they may have mixed some diesel fuel to the paint in order to complete the job. Look forward to the next installment.

Thanks for such an inspiring video. I've been holding back with the weathering of my tanks because I was not certain what route to take. However, your clear and simple techniques have really given me the confidence to have a go. Many thanks

Very helpful video. But IMO the jack, jack block and spare tracks shouldn't be colored dark yellow, since they were installed after the factory paint coat. These were sometimes painted over when camouflage paint was applied in the field, but in that case the other tools would have gotten the same treatment, so I don't see how only a few would be painted over.

Possibly yes, but sometimes they were in fact painted in the field. Many of the Pz IV, Pz III etc were actually Panzer Grey when they arrived in N. Africa and the crews would later paint them in the field. LOL Depending on crew, maybe they just decided to leave it on the tank when they sprayed it. Cheers!

Lovely job. Admire the perseverance of anyone that builds armour, I get to the paint job then lose interest 😂

Great talk on the RAL8000/7008. I'm doing that just now on a Tiger 1. I've also made the mistake of using Dunkelgelb for pre 1943 german AFVs. Meh still looks good if you are not pedantic about the colours!

Great second part of the series, thanks. Good to see others mucking about with paint options on the model and going back and changing it. Although I would find it really difficult to do this! One question for a relative newbie - after you put your base coats down (and they had time to 'bite'..!) did you do a coat of varnish before the decals and the oil weathering? Sorry if I missed this.
@ChampionScaleModelling
@ChampionScaleModelling Год назад
Usually I would but with MRP (the top coat of paint) it’s so tough and a little glossy that I don’t tend to bother with a varnish and do all my decalling on top, then I add a matt coat and weather on top of that

@@ChampionScaleModelling that’s great thanks for confirming. It does look glossy that’s why I wondered. Looking forward to next episode

Thanks for a great video. A question, How did you paint the interior of the turret?
@AdamMann3D

I prefer the Tamiya one if I'm honest. I feel the MRP one has too much saturation. I normally warm mine up via filters. Either is close enough for me to call accurate. Also, as for Tropentarn 1 and 2, the southern front was considered "tropical" in Russia. In at least that these schemes were thought to better match the local grasses and such. So it wasn't really vehicles meant for Africa as that the hues and tones in Tropentarn were suited to it. Never heard of RAL 7021 being used as the overspray color. Could have happened.

Revell 88 ochre brown is a wery nice color for desert viechle.

The panzers painted in gelbraun where originaly painted in the factory to be sent to Africa. The tropical colors where used even in the winter because the germans did not always have white paint to spray over with.

I talked over this grey over 8000 thing with my Panzer IV friends. I saw the images. They all look like brown mush to me. But certainly it is a known thing. I didn't realize. Cool idea for a scheme.

Oh another thing - the spare track links on the front deck - why are they painted in the hull colour and not like the other tracks?
@ChampionScaleModelling
@ChampionScaleModelling Год назад
Based on them being applied before paint, probably incorrect but I went with it
@jamesbednar8625
@jamesbednar8625 Год назад
It was a lot easier to just leave those things in place and paint over them than try to wrestle them off and then put back in place. Also, if vehicles are going to a dedicated paint shop and items like the tools, jack, spare tracks were not removed, or periscopes not covered up by tape or newspaper, these items would just be painted over because the employees at the paint shop sure were not going to remove them - not their job. Also, if painting in the field and there is a threat of enemy contact, lot easier to leave those items on the vehicle and paint over them. More or less a crew "decision", depending on circumstances probably. We do the same thing in the modern US Army as well. Some unit commanders will insist that tools and such be removed before painting while other commanders (or crews for that matter) just do not care if those items get painted over. Also, getting paint over sprayed onto the rubber portions of road wheels is more common than one would think because, again, someone either has to cover up the rubber somehow or you depend on the skill of the painter and hope they are good enough to not get paint on the rubber. Almost always there is over spray on the rubber road wheels which really does not affect the rubber in any way - unless you have one of those commanders that spaz out because the rubber got painted especially when they are trying to "cheeze-out" to the Battalion Commander or other VIPs (yep - been down that path before and a good can of flat black spray paint comes in handy). And, IF you somehow "forget" to tape over a periscope and that thing gets painted over - yep, it is a real pain in the buttocks region to try and get that paint off the lens with either a razor blade trying to scrape the paint off or using paint thinner which may/may not then leave behind a permanent "fogging" effect on the glass = had that happen before as well.

Youre paint is a littelbit too thin. That is why you are having issues with spiderweb spitting.
