I borrow noted German tank expert Hilary Doyle to go on this tour of a Panzer IV in Munster. Part 1 of 3.
This is a Wargaming-Paid video. The link if you want to start playing and attribute it to these videos (as mentioned towards the end) is tanks.ly/WoTCh...

When I was in the German Army (Bundeswehr) driving instructors would commonly put a bucket somewhere on a vehicle so that if the learner did not check the vehicle correctly it would make audible noises when driving. Perhaps this "tradition" came from the Wehrmacht with the same idea, someone found a tank where a bucket was still on, made the photo and since then all German tanks need a bucket.

It may have been used as a Latrine, if the Engine is hot you can shit in the warmth and have cover from the tank. It wouldn't be near any hatch to the crew compartment too, so no smell inside. It's where I would've put the poop bucket on a ww2 German tank :-) btw on what vehicle was the bucket method in the Bundeswehr done? In the Leopard 2 I would've got lambasted for not wearing hearing protection, if I heard bucket noises. Though I was a Loader, so didn't have much to do with driving training.

It was definitely the best German tank of WW2, or at least the most useful. Sure, it didn't have the gun or armor of the Big Cats, but it was a rugged, reliable all-rounder that could be produced in large numbers and made up the backbone of the Panzer Corps. In many ways it was the German equivalent of the Sherman
@mohammedhersi5774

@@DefconMaster It was the only German tank that was exactly what it was supposed to be, a decent medium tank that can do most tasks. It was cheap to build, easy to repair and the long barreled KwK outperformed nearly all alied non-TD guns during most of the war. Thats the exact design philosphy Germany should have stuck with. As for the provenance of the tank, did some digging: The red triangle with the vertical line (12:58) is the symbol of the 15th Panzer Division. It may have been re-painted since it was captured, but I would hope not. It seems that there was a single two-battalion tank regiment (8th Panzer) in that division. If it arrived in Tripoli in late October 1942, I would hazard a guess that it may have been captured almost immediately. The Second Battle of el Alamein began a few days after this tank arrived in-theater. Hence it's nearly pristine condition.

Agreed, it is a very interesting tale of technology transfer as well as the name sticking with the item. You can see in some pictures of the old style of fuel cans that the British forces used in the Western Desert, along with all the dents and you quickly realise why everyone swapped over to the Jerry can.
@michaelbevan3285
@michaelbevan3285 4 года назад
@@markfryer9880 the British four-gallon "flimsy" was hated by all who came in contact with it, as it was about as durable for military service as a biscuit tin and it had been earmarked for replacement before WW 2 as British Empire units hated it and kept complaining about it,especially when such cans leaked in storage or from rough handling. It couldn't cope with stacking like the Jerrycan could and refuelling vehicles with large fuel capacities like large aircraft or tanks took ages and was not safe practise in desert conditions. Jerrycans could be lined up and drained into vehicle tanks using large funnels.
@markfryer9880
@markfryer9880 4 года назад

Ohh Tiger II absolutely deserves it's own Inside the Hatch episodes! It was the biggest steel beast of World War II after all. Perhaps after this one he will manage to drag Mr. Doyle next to one of them as well...

Are there any restored King Tigers around where one could suitably showcase the interior? I don't know how the Munster King Tiger looks on the inside. Otherwise we have to wait a couple years, the Swiss are currently restoring one to running condition.

@@HerrGausF Musee Des Blindes at Saumur has one that runs. Plus, Chieftain has done many episodes in the past on vehicles that weren't in running order, or even entirely complete, anyway.

interesting little details like those convoy lights and such. And somehow I had no idea the Germans invented. the Jerry can (but...it was also a "aha!" moment with that name XD ). Interesting!

After my initial confusion seeing Doyle next to Chieftain it struck me that he would make a perfect tanker. Every tank would seem luxuriously roomy.

I read somewhere that the jerrycan is actually an Italian design adopted and mass-produced in vast numbers by the germans. Perhaps photographs of Italian vehicles dated before the arrival of the Afrika Korps will shed some light on this. The Maybach engines were compact because they used tunnel crankcases and crankshafts, a Maybach house specialty also seen in railway engines of the period (both petrol and diesel). The result was somewhat more fragile and demanding in maintenance terms, these engines were known to be temperamental, albeit with a very good performance.
