BJ has a close look at the new Tamiya kit viewing the brand newly tooled parts and nice decals included for the British and 2 American liveries.

Grumman's Wildcat production ceased in early 1943 to make way for the newer F6F Hellcat but General Motors continued producing Wildcats for U.S. Navy and Fleet Air Arm use. At first, GM produced the FM-1 (identical to the F4F-4 but with four guns).
The British received 300 Eastern Aircraft FM-1s giving them the designation Martlet V in 1942-43 and 340 FM-2s, (having changed to using the same name as the US) as the Wildcat VI.[21] Nearly 1,200 Wildcats were flown by the FAA and by January 1944, the Martlet name was dropped and the type was identified as the Wildcat. In March 1945, Wildcats shot down four Messerschmitt Bf 109s over Norway, the FAA's last Wildcat victories.
The F4F Wildcat is known as one of the most successful carrier aircraft designs of WWII. Among its variants was the FM-1, which was manufactured by General Motors' Eastern Aircraft Division; manufactured from August 1942, it had its armament reduced to four machine guns, and was also flown by British Royal Navy units as the Martlet Mk.V. The aircraft was usually deployed on aircraft carriers and tasked with warding off submarines as well as escorting valuable convoys.
♦This is a 1/48 scale plastic model assembly kit. Length: 184mm, wingspan: 242mm. ♦The modified form with four wing machine guns is faithfully depicted. ♦Recreations of minute rivets and panel lines ensure there is plenty of detail. ♦This kit can also be assembled as a Royal Navy Martlet Mk.V aircraft. ♦The complex landing gear is recreated using a limited number of parts, without compromising detail on the landing gear or its bays. ♦Includes one RAF and two US Navy marking options, plus a seated pilot figure.

Nice to know some one else appreciates raised detail. I love the old Monogram kits.

The only thing that really bothers me with these Tamyia F4F/FM-1 kits is the single supercharger intercooler radiator. I'm not the final authority on the topic, but I'm sure that all the 1830 powered 'Cats had 2. "Identical to the F4F-4 but with four guns" is right. The cowling is correct, with two scoops at 4 and 8 o'clock. My HB F4F and the Eduard F4F kits do it right, but Tamyia has never attempted to fix it. It just bugs me. I have to cobble up two radiators. Also, the F4Fs didn't have a solid floor, hence the windows. You did great, though. Many thanks.

Those drop tanks reminded me of Jeff Dunham’s Jose Jalapeño character. 😆

The naming of the kit triggered high order 'tism in me: There's no such thing as a Grumman FM-1/Martlet Mk.V. There is a Grumman F4F Wildcat, there's the GM/Eastern FM-1, there's Martlet Mk.I-IV, and Wildcat Mk.V 😵‍💫😂 Very disappointed with this kit though, for double the price, you get basically a bit of putty in the outer guns and ammunition access panels, and new pilot. Given the requirement to modify the wings, they really missed the mark not including a folding wing option. Not even a colour painting guide in 2024; $10 Hobbyboss kits can manage that! Very hard sell in the face of Eduard's offering, or even the original Tamiya F4F-4 for half the price.

Thank you for your opinion. I think Tamiya have done a stellar job of releasing a new kit with little tooling cost. It may be double the price of the F4F but by the time you get new decals, re-engrave the wing, and add a pilot figure I would much prefer to buy this kit.
