STORY
If you look really hard, you can probably find a car that has better acceleration, perhaps better braking, etc., when comparing the merits between four-wheel drive and a front engine/rear drive (FR) or front engine/front drive (FF) vehicle. It is only natural that 4-wheel drive is used for off-road applications as the FF and FR cars are much improved now, and 4-wheel drive is more complex and somewhat heavier, thereby requiring a more robust braking system, and more powerful engine, Not So!
The Audi Company of West Germany developed their Quattro which is Italian for the number four, during the late 1970s and released the GT Quattro in early 1980 at the Geneva Motor Show where it was the topic of conversation. It is said that the rally version was developed by Audi at the same time as the production Quattro however, it was not seen in any race until early 1981 at the Monte Carlo Rally.
It won the 2nd race of the year in the ice and snow of the Swedish rally, surprising many people who felt the 4x4 vehicle could not stand up to the grueling punishment. The Quattro is unique in that it is always in four-wheel drive, and to compensate for the differences in rotation speeds of each wheel during cornering or slippage, three differentials are utilized. This third differential is located in the transmission and is called the center differential by the Audi people. This and the rear differential can be locked or unlocked by the driver, at will when road conditions require it.
This system is what allows the Audi Quattro to be competitive with the FR and FF vehicles as well as other 4x4. This rally version uses the same 5-cylinder 2144cc engine as the production version; however, it is turboized with a K.K.K. turbocharger and produced 300hp rather than the 200 in the normal version.
The suspension system as well as the body have beefed up to withstand the rigors of competitive rally racing. The rally version is raced in the Audi colors and is tuned and maintained by the Audi firm, and has been in active rally competition since 1981, winning 7 races in 1982. The famous woman driver M. Mouton took 2nd place in the drivers' competition and the Audi firm gleaned the coveted maker's trophy for this high-performance 4x4.
