My first Rc ever. Many good days ( and frustrating ones) bashing around as a kid. Life was simple, no girls, no work, no real responsibilities, just finding that damn hex drive shaft when she popped out! Looking forward to seeing the run!👍
Yeah, long time ago friend gifted me his Frog after he got an RC10. First thing I did was stick a modified motor in it. Then it was nothing but trans gears after every few runs. Never did get a better trans and axles for it. Still want too because I still have it.
I raced a blackfoot back in the mid to late 90s. I still have it altho i did replace the shell because it eventualy split in half after being rolled so many time and some other stuff you would expect like bearings and tyres have been replaced but i never had a problem with the gearbox in mine.
I don't own a Tamiya at present but had several back in the late 80's when I was about 12 yrs old. My first was a Hornet (cost me $409 New Zealand dollars from Model Air in Newmarket) I remember my dad taking me in on a Friday night to get it. It included the kit, Acoms stick radio plus battery. Later I brought a Supershot, then last was a Porsche 956. I worked two Hearld paper runs each morning to pay for them. I had several mates with Tamiya's and we had hours of fun with them. Life was simply back then. Tamiya equals great memories for me. I'm tempted to get a Super Hotshot?
Brendan Shields Great memories my friend of as you said, simpler times 😎 Yes the Super Hotshot is a great buggy, I’ve done a couple of videos with one including it running. Check them out, it’ll make you want one even more 😂👊🏻
Cracking like old cement. In spring of 93 i got a Super Blackfoot so i never experienced a bad gearbox. Later around 94-95 I bought a used original like this one....only as a roller/parts truck. I have the 2016 MIB just never built it. Nice one chief.
Very good they do not use the aluminum gear, but solid plastic. Allso use 1pc of traxxas 1985 teflon washer on the diferensial to preventing it from slipping 😊🏁
I still have my 87 and the rest of my Tamiya collection like Glod Buster, Frog, lunch box, monster beatle. And your right about those gear box's there glass I really hoping that they revised it with the new release but my hobby dealer said it's exactly the same and that's the only reason I didn't buy one
Nice one! The blue and white F-150 (on the same chassis as the Rough Rider ) was one of my earliest favourites... my mate had one when I was a kid, and it was just awesome. Love the Blackfoot too. Classic shape.
SLAM BOY Awesome! Still got yours? Still have my original Clod (with Sees aluminum wheels, Sassy Chassis, anodized shocks, stronger steering servo, Futaba 3Ch, modified motors, metal gears, etc...and of course a Novak ESC! 🤓).
@@TAMIYALegends yea i did my father and i use to build them years ago and this was one of my first ones loved this truck i think i put a trinity 540 motor in mine at the time
Ian Wilson Oh that’s awesome Ian 😊👊🏻 You’re comment of constantly charging made me chuckle my friend 😂. I’d forgotten about that, god I must of spent hours and hours waiting for the fast charger bell to ring 😂👊🏻
I have 3 OG Bigfoot trucks. All with OG Thorpe differentials 2 are runners and the 3rd is a shelf queen all brand new with aftermarket body. One of them was my first RC car in 1988.
Hahah I remember I got mine for Christmas of 86 and here in Michigan in the winter never really got any drive time so when spring came I put a trinity monster mash motor in it and finally got to take it out for it's first real rip, ran a pack through it and one my second pack the speed controller welded the brass contact points together in the forward position it took off and hit a concrete curb full speed just blew it self apart, was absolutely devastated as a little kid, waited so long for my first hobby grade, needless to say I did fix it and think that's way I'm still addicted to this day😁😁😁 thanks for the vid brought back memories of a simpler time 👍👍
well that brings back some memories. I had a original 58065 Clod Buster and I put Monster mash normal/reverse rotation motors in and the stock MSC white ceramic resistor cracked and then exploded.
Those resistors ... uuhg... I had the 3 step speed controller, everyone else I knew were slowly going to the early Esc's. I felt left behind, I couldn't afford the new controllers... yes, I had both a blown resistor, and also had the welded controller... always found a way to get it going again
Now please put a brushless motor in and be the first to put the Blackfoot on the record for the fastest Blackfoot. And if you have to put the MIP diff in it.
I heavily modded mine back in the day. The main thing I did was put a Robinson Racing transmission in it. And I topped that off with a Speedworks Monster Mash motor.
Never ventured in to the monster truck tamiyas however always liked the look of them. Always preferred fast buggy’s. Looking forward to see it run though
I got an original Blackfoot that I bought in 1986. Still runs but the original body is not in good condition after 30 years of bashing! Originally I kept blowing half shafts out of it, so I upgraded the back end to the Blackfoot 3 rear end. The original lights over the cab were KC Daylighters written as a smiley face.
I had an original, circa 1990, I reckon I kept my local hobby shop in business for a few years buying replacement hex drives and diff pinions......wouldn't change a thing! Great memories....must not buy re-re, must not buy re-re, must not buy re-re, must not buy re-re, must not buy re-re.........
In 89 or 90 my lunchbox held up much better than my friends blackfoot. The blackfoot would break so easily and the hex halfshafts were worst ever and battery and hp robbing garbage. With no upgrades lunchbox was much better.
Charlie Brown 100% agree Charlie, I think the Lunchbox was a bit of a game changer from Tamiya regarding reliability 😊 And what a fantastic truck it was to run 😍👊🏻
I had the original one back in the day. It was my first rc ever. I was in love with it. I bought the ball bearing kit, oil shocks and a technigolg engine.
So happy you did the Blackfoot today. Have been in a quandary wether to buy original or go for a new one. Not bothered about the vintage side of things just want a black foot in my life, rapid. 😊👍🏻. Great Video Glenn. Love that smile of pure joy. D.
I do have a recommendation. I have a re-release monster beetle.I did mount the ESC where you did, which is what the instructions show. However, you can not get to it, or adjust it. I went to eBay and bought the original aluminum mount for the mechanical speed control. It will fit with out any modifications. You can mount your ESC or receiver. Or maybe mount them both right on that mount and also have easy access to them. The best part, that aluminum original mechanical speed control part is cheap.
I ordered one yesterday and stoked can’t wait for it to arrive :) since subscribing to the channel I’ve been binge watching it and finished, love your enthusiasm! And i mean no criticism but you sound like Keith lemon 😜 keep making these vids, I’m a total newbie to all this so watching all your videos has been helpful no end thank you so much
I got one of these in 88 and it was my first real RC. I beat that thing up and it just kept going. Being a dumb kid i sold it and I regret it. I just ordered my kit today to build my second, first RC all over again! I can't hardly wait for it to get here!!!
hi....hope you get back to me on this....On ebay a bloke is selling a anti gearbox grind upgrade for about 7£. Do you about this problem and how to fix it ?
i had an original which i paid weekly lol from fratton model shop in portsmouth ... my pal had the monster beetle which if i remember right they were the same but different bodies ... i used to bunk the train from bedhampton station to fratton and paid wat ever id earnt from odd jobs each week and once the final payment was done i got to take it home ...i loved it but hated the time it took to charge and only got 5 or 10 mins worth out of it lol ... i swapped it for a puppy ( typical 13 year old council estate chav ) pitball who became our beloved family dog and my side kick all through my teens and used to come out with me every night with all the other teens ...she was a legend and lived till she was 14 years old ❤ id love to get another rc car maybe one called a grass hopper which my other pal had and it was really quick or seemed it back then lol ... iv no idea about them these days im guessing you can boost them up with different motors and do the modern batteries last longer these days ??? sadly i heard that Fratton model shop is clossing down soonas they cant find a buyer for it 😢
They are nice trucks. I waited for years for a Monster Beetle replacement, built my own on a WT-01 chassis and a month later it was announced a re-issue.
I’ve heard you mention in a few videos that you put a 2s on the brushed motors!! I’ve tried this and the esc gets to hot and stops!! What am I doing wrong?
This truck is for me the nicest looking rc monster truck ever.. But, anyone seen it with the wheels/tyres from Clod Buster(?) I think that makes it look even better..and more to scale. Am I way off??😅
CG EYYE Hmmm interesting I don’t think I’ve seen one with ClodBuster wheels fitted 🤷🏼♂️. I wonder how they fitted the wheels on the front? But yes I could imagine it would look pretty sweet 🤩👊🏻
TAMIYA Legends Thankyou for your reply, my friend😊👍 yes, I saw it on youtube, here’s the title: ”how to mount clod buster wheels to a tamiya blackfoot 3.” (Sorry, don’t know how to leave a link😅😂) I’ve also seen it in a running video on youtube, and it just looks awesome😍🤩 I guess there’s some modifying involved.. I currently don’t own any rc’s, but this looks like a cool project..
Hey tamiya legends (or anybody else that could help) I'm looking for a tamiya kit that came out feb 2011. (Daughter born 23/2/11) and I think that would be an awesome prezzy. Thanks in advance.
@@TAMIYALegends Thanks bud I'll go hunting 👍. And I actually fancy the comical avante when its released soon. Ps keep up the good work. Love the channel
Yes, Frog was the first model that uses the same chassis & gearbox. The old Audi Quattro uses the Wild Willy’s chassis & gearbox...I used to have them...😖...great collections & thanks for sharing. Brings back so much memories when driving them as a kid. Now I am introducing them to my kids, my son - Supershot & my daughter - The Lunchbox....😁
Ah ! the Blackfoot !!! 👍👍 I put an old Dirt Tuned motor on my re-re (a really smooth and softpower motor. I love it for vintages). After 5 packs (NiMh - 3000mAh), I decided to upgrade with the MIP differential (bad noises in the gearbox, sometimes ☹. I can't imagine with a Sport Tuned ... ) ...💲💲💲... But I'm so glad to run it again 😊 I wish you a lot of fun with this one !!!
Never had, but always wanted a Blackfoot when I was a kid. Could not afford one sadly, so I ended up with (the equally classic, but) the totally undrivable Midnight Pumpkin. Today I have an original 80's Monster Beetle - and I love it :-)
The ORV (Off Road Vehicle) chassis was introduced with the Brat model. Brat, Lancia Rally, the Frog, Blackfoot, Monster Beetle, Mud Blaster, Bush Devil, Super Blackfoot, & King Blackfoot [ORV order of release].
This was my first new Tamiya and I loved it. Bought some Fox shocks for it that were too big and had to make brackets for it but got them to fit and jumped it off my aunts one story house a few times and the only thing that broke was the body between the bed and the cab. I don't remember it having a plastic cover over the speed controller or a rear skid plate so that's cool. Have a couple brats now and a scorcher. I had to save birthday and Christmas money for it and was glad they had one that was cheaper ($150) than the Bruiser ($400+ I think) I drooled over in the toy store. Awesome memories for sure and great RC!
I had an original but my neighbor ran over it, I was gutted. I was like 15yrs or so, my dad bought me a Sonic Fighter but sold it. I stuck 8 cells in it and it does wheelie when you go full reverse and then forward. I got me the re-re now. Loved the car but the front upright broke down very easily. MIP has a ball diff for it.
So cool... Brought a big grin to my face watching. My first "Real" RC car was a Frog, then I got a Grasshopper that I eventually turned into a truggy bu using the Lunchbox wheels and axle shafts (and a real 540 motor). The only thing missing from these kits is the old school ESC ant the white ceramic resistor that bunt the crap out of you finger after a good run!!! I wish I still had my old Tamaya cars (and my RC10 too).
Hi Glenn, after watching your video I watched a video from Wendy hough, the channel is older but it's seems to be Blackfoot and monster beetle mods. The video I watched was called "Tamiya Blackfoot dual dually" basically it's a ten!! Wheeled twin motored dual gearboxed thing of beauty!!. Steve UK.
Its great to see someone so passionate and happy about anything! Let alone a connection to something that so many people share from their own childhood. Great video! Links to the uprated parts you bought or recommend?
Great video. The Blackfoot is definitely in my top 3 Tamiyas for nostalgia. The other great thing about Vintage Blackfoots is that they're quite accessible and reasonably priced. Thanks Glenn 🙂 P.s: any thoughts of an Associated RC10 Goldpan project for the channel?
I just finished a monster beetle , my buddy picked up the Blackfoot , we have a small competition going , he has a grasshopper , and Blackfoot, I have a monster beetle, frog and lunchbox.
Stretching lunchbox tires on the blackfoot wheels is a good upgrade and no glue is needed because the tight fit. I use blackfoot wheels and lunchbox tires on my lunchbox.
@@TAMIYALegends After market blackfoot wheels and lunch box tires is best tho because original blackfoot wheels like to break near the center. And reversed tread will give best times. Tractors run the tread normal for self cleaning at low rpm. T Maxx tests proved backwards tread will pull much harder cuz my step son glued a tire on backwards on accident. If rear tire was on right it pushed truck to the left. Or visa a versa.
Can’t wait to see it running, I love these old Tamiya trucks. I just hope they rere the mudblaster to join the Blackfoot and Monster Beetle, it would be such an easy rere for them to do using the existing chassis and Subaru brat body.
Mr Doofa Yeah I’m really hoping you’ll enjoy the running video my friend, I know I did 😍👊🏻 And yes I couldn’t agree more regarding the Mud Blaster 🤷🏼♂️
Man. I had one of these as a kid. It was my first real RC car. Those diffs were junk. I rebuilt mine ten times. Then got the ball bearing kit to make it stronger. I had a original. I got it second hand. I had the hornet too from a uncle. It wa salsa first generation. Man I miss ex’s.
I Have a new old stock billet rear four link still in package for it from a machinist. All the billet and bits is there but no threaded rods so you can chose extension you want
I still have my original blackfoot the first mod I made was installed a locking diff and an esc. However the biggest negative was the tendency of the drive axles to pop out.
It's such a great looking truck! I had great fun running my Bush Devil this summer. Now I got an original front bumper mount on it though, so not sure if I dare to drive it off road anymore :P
