I never thought I would enjoy listening to somebody talk about paint as much as I did here. I learned a lot from this video. I also realized I need to step it up with my paint hoarding.
The best feeling is when you have finished prepping all the masking on a complicated Bodyshell and it's all ready to 🎨 paint 👍 I can only imagine the feeling when you were doing that Audi A4 body 😉
In all these years of RC’ing I painted my first body the other day. And wow, the paint pops. The body looks so much better than the ready painted jobs. Obv got a way to go yet to match your skills, but cheers for the inspiration and tips Chris!
We need more videos like this, I'm doing my first body and I did stripes using PS 31 as a base masked off, then I took off the masking tape and sprayed over the PS 31 and the newly unmasked lexan with PS63. Turned out good 😊
Personally, I think Corsa grey is a good colour, it works well on the RTR painted bodies. I painted it outside and it covers well, looks great with Matt finish. Matches well with gun metal. I learnt a lot from your videos, thanks!
Man I respect anyone who can paint a good body like you can. I struggle with painting a body mainly because of in-experience but I sure do enjoy watching a creation, like some of your bodies are, come to life in your videos. Interesting topic today. Enjoyed it

I completely agree with you on the numbering system. One my favorite effects found recently was to back PS-63 br. Gunmetal w/ PS-59 dk. Met. Blue to achieve a blued gunmetal highlight that looks great in certain light conditions. Awesome vid man, I’m kinda proud of my little collection of liquid gold too. ❤️🏁
Love that you mentioned heating up the cans with boiled water. It's something i've been doing for a few years and recommend to anyone that'll listen. Painting is definitely my favorite part of the hobby and I've learned alot from your vids over the years. So Thanks, especially for introducing me to PS-55. Sorry it took me till today to sub. Anybody who is upset about the amount we spend in rc is jealous. I prolly got 25 diffrent colors. when I want something super durable I always go ps. You have said it many times, cans have their limitation. Your videos always inspire me to try something new. I bought a cheap used airbrush. I started painting with proline airbrush paints....the quality of colors is nice, but doesn't stick the best. Tape pulls in corners a bit. Bleeds a little.so I keep my cans. I'm not sold yet.
I used to use nothing but Tamiya and Pactra Rattle Can paints, that is until everyone started wanting me to paint their RC bodies. I ended up trading the Rattle Cans in for a 26 Gallon Kobalt Quiet Tech Compressor and a few Iwata Airbrushes. Now I'm saving alot more money by airbrushing bodies instead of Rattle cans. I mainly used Faskolor,but now Faskolor is almost obsolete so now I use Pro-Line,Spazstix, Createx, and Wicked Paints. It may be more work to airbrush bodies,but it's alot cheaper in the long run.

I had a decent collection but dwindled down over time without replacing. I recently got an air brush setup as well. However I don't think I'm gonna do RC bodies with it though. I thoroughly enjoy the tape and rattle can method!🤘
When I was a kid in the 1980's Tamiya Polycarbonate paint was available in their small glass pots for brush painting,I did my Tamiya 'Boomerang' with them as I was afraid to try aerosols!👍✌

If hoarding anything in RC is bad, then lock me up in the asylum! lol A couple of questions come to mind. You experimented with a paint on mask at one time. I have tried that, and other than having to put multiple layers on in order to get enough coverage to make weeding your design easy, it worked pretty well. Now I see you using what looks like everyday yellow masking tape. Finally, I get to the questions! Is there a particular tape that works better than the next? Why not blue or green painters tape? Greetings from Switzerland. I am just getting into painting and this is a great reference. Bad news for us in Switzerland is that all Tamiya PS and TS paints have been banned from sale and import !!! Apparently the reason given is that the propellants used are super dangerous for the eyes. I wonder if the EU will do similar.
@@hemistormrc Fortunately I am near the French border so I am able to hop over then hope the customs don’t check me. However I am ready to bet that the EU commission will be the next to introduce the ban. Hope not.
Just found your channel and some great videos! Just got back into RC after 20 odd years away and have got the bug for painting. Will only do a couple of shells a year though so spray can way more cost effective. Thanks for the tips. Will be going back over your back catalogue now!
Sure wish Tamiya`s PS Primer Gray wasnt so darn hard to get hold of :( Also, If you paint any of the clear PS colors you can back it with the lame flake to get a really stunning candy/flake effect if you go heavy on the lame flake and back it with bright silver. But I am sure you allreadyknow. Thanks for sharing your awesome techniques and always keeping it real! :)
Yes indeed! I will see with my local supplier if it i indeed discontinued, as I noticed a shop in New Zealand claimed to have it in stock. And good call on the flake paint, it has multiple uses for sure. Have fun!

Hi Martin, I assume you mean on the outside of the body? I have on a few occasions, if you look at the RedCat Gen 8 video for example, I did it there. Also on the Element Trailwalker, on the Axial SCX102 RTR Cherokee and a few others. Let me know if you can find what you are looking for.
I have once or twice used other brands due to lack of availability and being in need, and have never found it worked as well as the Tamiya paint. Thank you for stopping by! 👍🏼

Great video! However I have to disagree with you on the PS13. I did a Miller High Life GTP replica with it and its looks amazing. It took about 8 coats and backed in black.
For my Axial Unimog trail rig I want the do a construction/logger theme. Which orange combination would yell “hey you look like a logger”? Plan on adding sand rails, chainsaw, shovel/axe, snatch bock, small yellow flashing light......
any advice what should I back my subaru blue color? i saw some guys on youtube backing in with black or white but what you says it maybe be better to use the other blue shade?

what would you back a cobalt green with? I plan to back it with a white then I'm metallic blue 2nd color and maybe a fluorescent green pinstripe on the hood.

About that PS-31 Smoke. Your thoughts on using it for tinting windows? And another question what colour (some kind of blue, maybe) to use for the top of the windshield sun strip?
If I use the flat clear as a primer, would it allow me to then use the AS line of tamiya paints or just the TS? They have a really nice military tan that I would like to use for a upcoming build.

Love the paint collection wish I had that. Looking to do a dark candy red any suggestions on what colors to use to get that would be awesome. Using translucent red ps37 I think is the right number
You could definitely go with a translucent red, and add your choice of flake or metallic behind it. What works well, as always, is using a scrap piece of lexan to test. Have fun!
I think that's one of your nicest videos so far, really pleasant and interesting to hear some paint talk! However, I have to admit I'm moving away from using Tamiya paints, they just really stink too much, my cellar smells for something like 12 hours after using them, and I even got fair ventilation. Now to figure out how to use a damned airbrush, ha ha! And a thing that disappointed me a bit, you didn't want to talk much about transparent paints much. To me, they are amazing! You can do all kinds of cool metallic colours after using a layer of transparent first. I achieved some really deep green and blue metallic colours on a couple recent cars, I even got videos of them, check it out if you want!
Great vid. Currently struggling to get a nice colour pink for a Porsche 911. Want to paint pink pig colour as they used at Le Mans race but ps-11 is too pink. Trying to work out what to back it with. Any advice welcome
Hey hemi. Great vids. Trimming a ProLine C-10 body for my SMT-10. Wanting to paint it PS-14 Copper and name it 'Bad Penny.' What should I use as backing that will give a well-used penny shade to the copper color? Would applying PS-55 Flat Clear before the PS-14 work to dull it down to a used penny look? Then a backing? Great video as always. I prefer Tamiya as well. Noticed some peeling issues with an earlier job I did. Could you please explain your prep before painting? For instance should I be scuffing the paintable areas of my body or as you mentioned with the flat clear of using it as a primer?? TIA
The only problem with being a subscriber is knowing a lot of us (like me) will never ever have your skills. I am in wrapping and graphics but can still not plan or design anything. But I have staff that can. Bu serious question, if chasing a flat/Matte style finish would doing the base layer (painting inside off course) of the flat help that? A lot of shops I go to don’t have a a very good range of paints or often out of stock so hard to choose colours on the interweb.
To achieve a matte finish you should always treat the outside of the body. The clear overspray film you find on the shell is really a protective film to keep the glossy finish of the shell safe while you paint. If you peel the clear film and add a coat of flat clear, whatever is on the inside appears flat. I hope that helps!
