A teenage student pilot flew a single-engine Cessna into a skyscraper in downtown Tampa, Fla., yesterday evening, killing himself but apparently no one else, government officials said.
The pilot was 15, a year below the minimum age for solo flights, took off alone and without permission in a Cessna 172 in which he had been scheduled to fly with an instructor, the authorities said.
The authorities identified the youth as Charles Bishop of Palm Harbor, Fla., a ninth-grade honors student at East Lake High School.
Sgt. Greg Tita of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department said last night that Charles had been dropped off by his grandmother, Karen Johnson, for a two-hour flight lesson that was to begin at 5. Sergeant Tita said that Charles was conducting ''preflight procedures'' in the plane before his session, and took off at 4:50 p.m.
Sergeant Tita said the flight instructor was ''busy with other students'' when Charles began taxiing down the runway.
''He did not have permission to take off in a stolen aircraft from St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport,'' Sergeant Tita said. He added, ''The instructor was in no position to stop him.''
Charles's takeoff was observed by an air traffic controller at the St. Petersburg-Clearwater airport, just west across Tampa Bay from Tampa. A long-range Coast Guard helicopter was already airborne on a patrol of the type instituted since Sept. 11, and was sent to investigate, according to a Coast Guard spokesman, Cmdr. James McPherson.
A crew member made hand signals to the pilot to land, but with no effect.
The Cessna 172 struck the 40-story, glass-and-steel Bank of America building on the 28th floor, site of the law offices of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, The Tampa Tribune reported. The building was mostly empty, and the plane, a six-seater, caused little damage and no fire. The Cessna 172 weighs about 2,400 pounds, about the same as a small sedan, and carries 56 gallons of fuel. Its wingspan is about 36 feet.
Although the crash seemed like a miniature replay of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, government officials said they did not believe it was an act of terrorism. Still, it seemed likely to revive questions about airport security, not only for passenger jetliners but also for small, general aviation aircraft.
It was not immediately clear if the youth intended to crash the plane; the bank tower is near another tower of similar size and one aviation expert said it was possible that the teenager intended to fly between them. The pilot never spoke to air traffic controllers during his flight.
The Federal Aviation Administration suspended air traffic in the area, barring takeoffs from the Tampa and the St. Petersburg-Clearwater airports from 5:10 to 5:50 p.m. and halting arrivals for a few minutes after 5:10 p.m.
A spokeswoman for the aviation agency, Laura J. Brown, said that the crash investigation would be handed over to the National Transportation Safety Board. The board is in charge of accident investigations, not crimes or acts of terrorism; the board's taking jurisdiction is a sign that for now, at least, the crash is being viewed as an accident.
The security of general aviation airplanes has been a major issue since four airliners were hijacked on Sept. 11. Even after the airlines were allowed to resume operations in mid-September, private planes were kept grounded for weeks. At the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, Warren Morningstar, a spokesman, said, ''This unfortunately and tragically demonstrates what we argued before -- a general aviation aircraft just isn't capable of doing much damage.''
Aviation agency records showed that the plane was owned by the boy's flight school, National Aviation Holdings Inc.

My sister was a Flight Attendant on 9-11 she was in the air coming back from Germany for hours after the attacks we had no idea if she was safe or in danger. Late that night we found out her flight had landed safely in Canada because US air space was closed. I remember the fear my family went through. I can’t even begin to fathom what the families of the victims went through.

I was watching The Today Show when the second plane hit. My daughter, who is now 26, came in the room just as the second plane hit. I’ll never forget her asking “Mommy, why did that plane fly into that building?” I can’t describe how I felt that day in words. I’ll just never forget.

i was at college, writing up a 'response to the event'. BUT no plane hit Building #7 of the WTC. and yet the B7 still fell to the ground. due to thermite charges, which caused the over 3000+ cancer deaths of NYC/WTC. FD: i watched 'escape from NY' on 9/10/01 with the movie ending around midnight // there was no one for me to call to warn to leave NYC. gwbush sold out the usa to the saudis and On 9/11/2015 GOD hit Mecca with high winds, knocking over an industrial crane, which landed on and killed 1700+ Muslims as they did their circle in the sands' routine, round and round. The owner of the WTC made out with $14 Billion, one per plane hitting this 3 Buildings. only 2 planes and 3 buildings fell = losers fell for the big lie

May I please say "Welcome Home Sirs! Thank you so much for your service, everything you had to sacrifice, both over there and since you've both returned home. I am so, so, SO TERRIBLY SORRY for the horrific treatment you all received when you returned home, and how everybody conveniently forgot that you were all forced to go via some sick, twisted "birthday lottery" on TV; how you had to see Hell on Earth while you all were there; all the heartache and traumatic pain of losing so many of your buddies and colleagues over there; everything horrible you were subjected to; for having to listen to Forrest and Bubba and Captain Dan talking sh!t (sorry - that bit's a joke, to bring a small amount of relief to a hard topic!?!), and for everything else both over there and since that both the Vietnam War and it's disgraceful aftermath amongst the public towards the veterans - who didn't have any choice but to go because of conscription, and who had already lost and suffered so much already (Shame on them!! - meaning the public; some of whom even spat at Vets and made appalling remarks to!?!) - and finally, Thank you so much for putting your lives on the line in the hope of enriching the existence of mankind in peace! God bless you all!!" to each of your father's...?? I am not even American; nor was I even born by the time Vietnam ended, but being a history buff, I've heard all about the kind of treatment you were subjected to upon returning home from Hell on Earth, already with so many scars that nobody can ever see or understand - and I've always thought that that was Abhorrent, Despicable, Beyond Cruel, Callous and Inhumane!!! ( I mean, ffs - the army who fought to KEEP SLAVERY and lost, received more respect and "honor" in defeat than you guys who weren't defeated, had no choice in whether or not to participate, and were doing so in the name of improving the lives of total strangers; as opposed to brutally oppressing an entire group of human beings because of the colour of their skin [?!?!] received after your selfless service!!!) I find that extremely unfathomable to my understanding or comprehension, AND SO UNBELIEVABLY OFFENSIVE TO MY VERY SOUL!! God bless you both in your lives, your recovery and the rest of your lives!! With much love, best wishes and Admiration, From Ireland 🇮🇪 XxX

I was at work in a bar here in Greece and somebody came in and said there had been a plane crash, I put the news onto the TV thinking "oh that's sad" not realising the extent of what had actually happened. There were quite a few people in the bar at the time and I still remember when we all sort of realised at the same time that both towers had fallen-the shock and sadness was immense. Even now when you watch footage of it, it still brings a lump to your throat 🥺

9/11 The day the nation came together. There was no hatred. No rudeness. No protesting whose life matters. We were kinder, more helpful and more patient. We went to church. We hugged our children and loved ones. We gave blood. We did good things. There was no hate. Sure, we wanted to get even. But for that first year, kindness and love triumphed over all. Not a day goes by I don't think of that day. And I've continued to be that kind person. That person that chooses love over hate. I'll hold the door for a stranger. If someone needs help, I help. America needs to do a lot of reflecting. This was a great upload Scott. I had no idea about this other plane crash. 🕊️🙏❤️

On September 11th I was at home asleep in my bed because I had the day off work. My Mom came barging into my room and woke me up and said, "Get up. We're under attack." And I was glued to the news the rest of the day. I can remember sitting there watching a broadcast and it was a helicopter shot of the 1st tower burning with a wide shot of the background in the same shot, and my eyes weren't looking at the burning tower, my eyes were looking at the background and any speck of anything moving. Then all of a sudden I was like, "Wait, whats that?".....and within seconds you could tell it was a plane and we watched the 2nd plane hit. I will never forget that day.

I will never forget waking up to my phone ringing non stop for over ten minutes on the morning of Sept 11th, 2001. My boss called to tell me where I work is locked down with nobody allowed in or out of the gated grounds. He asked if I saw what happened in New York? I turned my TV on and sat down not able to talk anymore. Where I work is a big what is called a Earth Station which is a large facility of huge satellite antennas used for some Government operations but mostly business television. Of course it is marked as a hot spot because of its size and what we do. The three employees locked in the facility luckily were able to eat what ever others had in our lockers for food. Forty eight hours later we could go in and out again but we had guards at the gates. Every 9-11 after this tragic date I take the whole day to reflect on what happened and watch lots of the programs on TV and You tube about that day. I really love your way of creating these videos and hope you know how much we all love you.

Scott, you are always so respectful no matter the story. I love that about you. This story is very sad, and I feel bad for his mom. She will be grieving for the rest of her life, no doubt. On to 9/11. That had to be the saddest day in American history and around the world. I was at work when my manager told me that a plane hit one of the towers and then came back to tell me another one hit the other tower. I told him I was running across the street to Kmart to buy a TV. I came back with it, and we watched the horror unfold. I cried, I was scared, and I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Probably the most depressing day of my life. I was also worried because I had two sisters who lived in PA and four sisters living in New York. One of my sisters in PA and her husband had flying privileges because my brotherinlaw worked for American Airlines for 20 years after retiring as a Captain in the Air Force. I was so afraid that one or both of them were in the air somewhere. It turns out that my brotherinlaw was flying home to PA on a different flight when the planes hit the towers and the 3rd one hit the Pentagon. He knew nothing about it until his plane deboarded and they saw the TVs in the waiting area. Thank God he was on a different flight! My other Sister in PA lived only about two miles from the Pentagon, but thankfully she and her husband were fine. All of my New York family were also ok, but one of my brother-in-law's was a taxi driver in New York City. He dropped a passenger off that morning in front of the twin towers less than 15 minutes before the first plane hit. It really affected him, always wondering if his passenger made it out alive. It was just an awful day. 9/11 is what motivated my son-in-law to join the army. He was in the 101st airborne division out of Fort Campbell and deployed to Iraq three times, and also part of the unit that caught Saddam Hussein. He mailed me money with his face on it before they burned it all. That day will never be forgotten. May all of those poor souls who lost their lives rest eternally in heaven. We will never forget.

I was in my room, studying (I was in Form 4 back then - equivalent to Grade/Year 10) when my Dad came in to get me (this was before handphone/cell phones and we didn’t do pagers) down to watch TV about something happening in America. We saw smoke coming from one tower, then as we watched, the second plane flew into frame from the back, tilted then ploughed through - and the news anchor - CNNs Paula Hahn back then and she just paused for a few moments then continued giving us all the facts, pausing again when first one tower collapsed and then another. It must’ve been very difficult for her and the crew, thinking that they’d just witnessed an event causing possibly several thousand deaths at that very moment but still had to do their jobs at such an extraordinary time.

I grew up in Central Florida, so we could easily step outside to watch a launch in the sky above. We were, as a school, in the quad, watching because of the first teacher in space thing. Keep in mind, we'd seen dozens of launches before. I don't care how old you were, when you look into the sky and see two plumes, it's really really bad. Teachers were trying to get us back into class, but we all knew. Finally got the rest of the day called off of school, if I remember right, so we could express our feelings to our families.

I was just doing housework just after lunch time (gmt) when my brother in law called and told me to put sky news on.. I watched glued to the telly, then before our very eyes the second plane hit. We both screamed and cried, then silence still glued to the telly. I then called my husband in work. Collected the kids from school early because the uk went into lockdown aswell as the US. Came home in time to see them collapse. Myself and my kids cried for you over the pond. 💔 ♥️ 😢

I was working in Midtown Manhattan that day; my sister worked in the WTC, South Tower on the 52nd fl. When one of my supervisors said that a plane hit the Trade Center, I was like yeah right. Of course I was in denial. I immediately tried to call her cell phone but as we all now know, cell phones were jammed. Thank God I finally heard from her a few hours later, she walked down 52 flights of stairs and was able to get one of the last trains out to Queens with a friend. Our family was so blessed and thankful. I still watch the reading of the names in memory of all those who unnecessarily perished that day. We will never forget!

Hi Scott, On 9/11 I had a week off work, but I stayed at home in 🇬🇧where I live, that was a horrific day for America, it was so sad when the Twin Towers went down. That plane in Tampa Florida must have been really scary after 9/11, it must have brought all the memories back. I can’t believe it was caused by a 15 year old, I mean what was he thinking ??? I feel so sorry for his mum, I’m glad no-one in the building was hurt, RIP to the real pilot, RIP to all the victims of 9/11, never ever forgotton. 💐💐💐💐💐💐, thank you Scott for putting this out. ✌️🤟🏼

The company I work for occupied several floors in the south tower. I worked in accounting handling the NYC office but worked in MD. A coworker who normally worked in the tower was visiting the MD office that day. Not only did he lose his mother, who survived the original bombing, but he lost 176 of his colleagues that day. Many of our coworkers who survived were so traumatized that it took years before they could be near a skyscraper. The 911 tape of one lost colleague (Kevin Cosgrove) was played at the sentencing of the siperson tried for 911. The tape is heart wrenching so be careful when deciding if you want to hear it. The scream he let out when the tower started collapsing is something you’ll never forget. I sympathize with people who have mental illness, but knowing at least some people in the tower realized what was happening when the towers fell, makes it hard to sympathize with this kid.

When the first plane hit the building I was in bounced off the ground up and down fast, alarms in building going off and someone in the building said please evacuate over and over. Went outside and paper was falling down out the sky everywhere, my cellphone didn’t work, everyone running and etc. I just on the # 4 train from Wall Street to home the Bronx Mt Eden. I got home and went to my sister home , when I left downtown the first plane hit, when I got home we watched the 2nd plane hit, and later both fell. All I thought is I was just down there. I got out in time, thank god and I will never forget, my prayers always to the people and families effected by this event

One disaster I remember was the spaceshuttle launch explosion of the1980's on live TV. I was in second grade watching it live during science class. But 9/11 I was living in Seattle and I was getting ready to move back to New Jersey and I remember my heart breaking for the hundreds of innocent people in the tower's and on those planes and it just had me depressed for a little while after that and I remembered being scared to go into the city for anything. I remember alot of tragedies that happened that I could share with you Scott but way too much to write in a comment box. Have a great day my friend and take care.

I was working for the Fire Department in a clerical position on 9/11. I remember going in to the office that day and the Emergency Operations Center had been activated leaving myself and one other secretary there. It was eerie since there were usually 11 other people in the office on any given day. We watched the news all day in the break room, cried and got very little administrative work done. The phones were eerily quiet that day.

I was born in NJ and raised in NY. Not NYC but my maternal grandmother lived just off of Riverside Drive so I was visiting NYC since my early childhood. On 9/11, I was 29. I lived in Orange County and worked in Rockland County which is about 30mi NW of NYC. I worked in customer service in the town of New City. The customer svc building and the administrative office were 2 separate buildings directly across from eachother. We were basically right off of route 304. I had gone to the admin office that morning & the TV was on. I glanced at it & I assumed I was looking at a commercial for the next Diehard movie. Everyone else looking at the TV looked horrified. This was right after the 1st plane hit. I can't tell you how long it was after that (we were all in shock) but all the sirens in our proximity started up. Outside was a sea of emergency vehicles. Fire trucks, EMS, Police..... using ALL the lanes on route 304 & heading south to NYC. It was surreal but it made sense because that's the NY spirit. We were going to help in any way possible. The drive home that day was gut wrenching. Literally. Hearing about all this on the radio and on the news was bad. But seeing the actual real effect it had hit very hard. Most people who commute to NYC live in Rockland and Orange counties. Rush hour traffic is a given and a small price to pay for living in "the country". There was no rush hour. Part of my commute home is the New York State Thruway. Empty. Empty at 5:10pm. Empty as far as you could see with the exception of a lone car once or twice. Route 17 over sterling forest mountain.....empty. I remember stopping at a red light. I was in tears. "I'll Stand by you" by The Pretenders was on the radio. A car pulled up next to me and she was listening to the same station. She was also in tears. We looked at eachother for a moment, and I think we both said something along the lines of "stay safe" or something.... Pulling into my hometown was like going back in time. No traffic. No sound. There were a lot of folks sitting on their front porches. Most of them waiting for their loved one's car to pull into the driveway after a long day at work. A lot of them never came home. In the following days/weeks there were little Amercan flags everywhere. On cars. Front lawns. Big flags hanging outside houses. Flag from all businesses were flown at half mast. For the next 6 months there were constant funerals. Daily Funeral processions. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes somewhere in the distance or passing by. I knew a lot of folks who died that day. Some I went to shcool with, some I knew through mutual friends. I remember flyers posted of those missing. They weren't just in NYC. They were everywhere. I still can't watch any documentary re: 9/11. It's been 23 years and it still feels too close to home (literally). It's amazing how I can remember almost every single minute of that day. ❤

I was a manager at IHOP and my Mom called and said that a plane hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. At that time, they thought it was an accident. Then she called back a few minutes later to tell me another plane hit the other one. I told all of my customers and we piled into the office to watch the T.V. as the other two planes crashed into the Pentagon and the ground. We all just cried and held each other. No bills were do! I told them to go home and hold their loved ones. So so so sad!!!

I lived in San Diego. My son called me and asked if I was watching tv. I said no. He said turn on the news. I turned it on and saw the second plane hit. I said to my son are we being attacked. Is it war? He said it looks that way. We both were devastated when the towers fell. We knew hundreds if not thousands lost their lives. I cried the rest of the day for those lost souls. 😢😢😢. I never knew about the boy who flew a Cessna into the Bank of America in Tampa. As a mother who lost two sons my heart goes out to his mother. I’m glad no one else was hurt. Thank you Scot for this and all of your videos.
