I can't make any promises there, as I don't have the Sigma right now. I will optically compare it to the Canon 100-400L II, though, since I do own that lens.
Hey Dustin, when you go to make your optical review. If you can throw in the 70-200mm G2 for a quick comparison in case anyone like myself who already has it is wondering if the 100-400 would be a good addition unlike the 150-600 G2 that turned out to be a bust at tele end. BTW, cat and dog photos will be great. Animal hair is torture on lens resolution IMHO and a great way to see how the lens holds up.. Thanks and God bless..
Your reviews are of such a high quality that I watch them just for the enjoyment. I've jumped ship to Sony, and I would like nothing more than Sony setting you up with the new R3 and all the G-masters, but I really enjoy watching a review of something I'll never get non the less. Your review of the 85 Otis was probably the best review I've ever seen. Just incredible. I really hope more people discover your channel, and I do promote it when I have the chance. Regards from Norway
Well, a momentary brainfart made me (to my surprise) put in a preorder for a R3 the other day, and lo and behold, to my surprise it got shipped the day after and now it sits here on my table in all it's glory. Optical quality is the main thing for me so it's definitely some madness in replacing an expensive R2 with the even more expensive R3, but hey; we only live once, right :) It's charging now, but I must say the grip was a really pleasant surprise compared to the R2 :)
I have had this lense for quite a while, it's my go to at the moment. Its very versatile. I love it. Thanks for the review. I'm also still a beginner and learner in photography, but I'm coming along.
Looking forward to seeing the AF speed and the Stabilization tested. Your bluejay shots seem to show a rather nervous bokeh to me yet nicely sharp focus on the subject. Photos of the kids show a smoother bokeh.. so that is interesting.
I would be very interested in the T-Stop approximation. With the least amount of glass, I wonder if the exposure at 6.3 for the Tamron may not equal the same as the Canon at 5.6. I loved on how when you were doing the completely exhaustive testing of the Tamron 24-70 G2, you noted at how much brighter they were than the Sigma and Canon. For me shooting sports, although I'm not giving up my 2.8s, I would like to have something more versatile the wife and kids could use; and keeping the ISO down at those apertures becomes a real struggle and every bit helps.
Hi Dustin Thanks in advance for your upcoming review of Tamron 100-400mm. I have a request to you. Would you please make a subsection comparing Tamron 70- 200 mm G2 with 2x TC and Tamron 100-400mm?
Thanks for the work Dustin. By the way, I'm not seeing any landscapes in the gallery, I'm really interested in seeing how this lens works with close to infinity focus. I was saving up for the canon 70-300L mainly for landscapes (but also some wild life), and although the sigma's AF and no tripod collar are kind of a deal breaker for me, maybe this tamron would fit. I'm also very interested into knowing how well weather sealed they are. Thanks a lot!
Since I've only had the lens for a few days (and have about five other projects on the go), my shooting time has been limited. I do plan to squeeze in some landscape shots.
Great video. Can this lens be used for landscape like Arches NP where things can be far away? I was looking at the Tamron 150-600 g2 and I saw this lens which do you think is a better lens
I'll be interested to hear your review of this lens' IQ, AF, etc in actual use. I want to get one in that range for my Canon 5D4 (and 80D?) so it'll be between this Tamron and the Sigma.
Great first look video, hoping to find out what you have to say about this lens. I'm thinking it could be a good option for one looking for a every now and then lens for me. Keep up the good work.
Hi Dustin. Congrats for your work with the technical reviews. Precise and systematic. I can't wait to see a comparision between that new Tamron 100-400mm with the Sigma and / or Canon. I'm thinking about it for shooting videos of our travel expeditions, mounted on a FF Nikon Dslr, in complement to a second body with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8... Not the kind of application you're thinking about at first, but it could be my answer for that creamy look, combined with a good stab as well as a fairly compact size. What do you think about using this 100-400 for video in terms of autofocus in video and stability on the move without having to always set up a tripod ( not very easy while doing an action report ). Thanks a lot. Wish you all the best. Nicolas from Switzerland.
I think it should work. The VC does a great job of stabilizing the viewfinder, which indicates that it should do well for video stabilization as well. I'm not blown away by the focus speed in Live View (DPAF), but I'll separately test the performance for video.
Hi Dustin, Greetings from India I was eagerly awaiting for you to review this lens.I own a canon 77d with 18-135 nano usm kit lens,I need a telephoto lens for wildlife.Initially I was considering getting a Sigma 100-400 from Usa,but have ruled it out because of af issues and poor service support in India.Currently tamron 150-600 the original version is for sale at b&h for 799 dollars, exactly the price of this new lens.Although I would prefer a lighter lens but an extra 200 mm reach at same price has started to appeal me more.Is the older 150-600 still a viable option than these new lenses .Would like you to please compare 100-400 with150-600 or at least share your thoughts about it. Regards, Vivek Hura.
I won't have a chance to do a direct comparison. This is definitely a much smaller, more portable lens. You will have to decide for yourself whether or not you need the extra reach, but in many cases 400mm on a crop camera like yours is quite a bit of reach.
Hey Dustin, thanks for the great first look! I have a question... is the inner barrel of the lens (the part which retracts) metallic or is it plastic? Thanks in advance!
Hey Dustin, Will you get your hands on the new Canon 85mm 1.4 IS anytime soon? Would love a review of that lens, escpecially if it has the magical rendering of the 1.2 version.
Thank you for this video. I am interested in this lens and hoping it is similar in picture quality to the Nikon 200-500 lens I rented back in 2016. I loved that lens but it was a bit heavy for me. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on using this lens on wildlife.
This lens is going to be considerably lighter. It also looks like the optical performance will be pretty good. I'm mostly interested in how the AF system handles action at this point.
Thanks for your quick reply. Birds in flight and animals on the move are high interests for me, and edge to edge sharpness for those landscape shots that are not accessible by foot, or can benefit from lens compression.
As far as I am concerned, you are the goto resource for gear reviews. Very informative and professional. I briefly had the Sigma 100-400. Loved the glass- disappointed in the electronics and the lack of tripod collar. Had a chance to use the Cannon 100-400 IS II- top notch experience except the weight and purchase cost. I especially found its rotation in the collar to be invaluable for monopod use. I didn't take it off the lens, but given the silky smooth rotation, I assume it had some sort of bearing. Does Tamron's collar allow for dynamic rotation (w/bearings?). Anxiously waiting for the APS-C optical and VC/AF reviews. Any chance of trying it with the 1.4 TC? It would be nice to know just how "far" the optics hold up with a crop body. When does it make sense (w/APS-C) for more optical reach or cropping down..100-400+TC, 150-600G2, or 100-400 cropped down?
I actually don't have the tripod collar - I don't even know if it is available yet. I don't have a Tamron TC to try it with, unfortunately, and I fear that using my Canon extender might not give it a fair shake.
Thank you for the quick reply. I was hoping that Tamron might send the collar to you before you're done with the lens (or if you learn anything about it you could pass on....). The Canon collar was such an unexpected benefit on a waist mounted monopod with a single axis head.
I bought the 2x converter from Amazon. I must say I am not happy. I instead would go with Canon 400mm prime. I very much happy with the Tamron 70-200 the extender just ruin it I think.
I clicked on your Amazon link but got a message "We found 0 results for "tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 di vc usd"". The B&H link worked fine. I was going to put on a list as I wait for another of your excellent reviews before buying.
Is that a pre-production sample? also funnily in India Tamron recently introduced their updated("G2" or Tap compatible) 70-300mm VC and this new 100-400mm is just too close to price of that lens.
its this one or the Canon 400mm f5.6 can anyone please tell me which one to pick ? this one new $800 and the canon $700-$900 camera a7ii with MC-11 Adapter.
From what I've seen so far, I don't think you will be disappointed. That being said, I still haven't had a chance to torture test the AF for tracking. But even when I do - I'm working with a "early production model" and its performance may or may not be indicative of the final retail release.
There's a possibility where some of the footage was shot at 24 FPS (in order to get the right framing - Sony requires you to go Super 35 to avoid adding a crop factor), and the final output is 30 FPS. That's the only thing I could think of.
Dustin, for god’s sake, align your camera! Camera pointing down is cutting the botton of the footage! It is very uncomfortable to watch. Move camera more to the bottom and level it to the table. Please, make camera closer to the table. It is too far! Thank you!
I'm afraid your suggestions are not practical in this situation. I'm shooting in a light tent, and there is a fixed camera opening to shoot through. The upside of the light tent is that you are getting great illumination of the subject so that you can see all the detail on the lens.
I don't know that it is sharper, but it is certainly very sharp. The bigger question will be about the AF system - that's where the improvement is needed over the Sigma.
