Unless I am mistaken, no Sony mount for this? But if you don't need tracking, Metabones work fine with the Sigma (that I brought after watching your vid!).

Would like to see a comparison with the Sigma counterpart really. Oh and get that new FF Canon you need mate, that 6D is really over resolved a lot lately :D

I really wish that Tamron would make an equivalent of the Sigma MC-11 that provided reliably good AF for its lenses (and Video Servo AF). This lens is a seriously good value for money, though.

Michael, unfortunately both Christopher and I have to deal with the reality of expensive camera gear. It's one thing to get loaners to test (that doesn't cost us anything), but quite another to purchase expensive test cameras.

Dustin, Your usual astoundingly informative review. It pretty amazing. I own the Canon, but I am more and more impressed with what Tamron is doing. I have believed that the Canon 100-400 was just about the sharpest lens out there.

It continues to be an excellent lens (the most complete of its kind), but yes, in some ways the third parties have managed to create pretty competitive lenses at much lower prices.

I've been waiting for about a month on this video, and once it came out I was in public transit on the way home. I was using the Tamron 70-200 VC for my kid's outdoor sports, wanted a longer lens for a better reach at soccer events and convinced this is the one, just received one and will try in a couple of says.

Dustin, I did a quick test shot with the 100-400 at 200mm f/5.6 its widest at that zoom, then I put on the Tamron 70-200 VC at 200mm and same settings, I am surprised at the performance on the edges, hard to tell the two apart. And my 70-200 is a sharp lens. Thanks again.

What a great lens and great review again Dustin. I think I said this about the sigma version review as well but I'm glad they put these out after they made the 150-600. I love my Sig 150-600 C and if I had one of these I would never had purchased it. I could see owning this as a luxury for wildlife photography and landscapes when I travel so I don't need that big lens and others. Tamron has really stepped up their game and my next purchase will definitely be the Tamron 24-70 G2!

They really have made some huge strides in all-round quality. I actually sold my 150-600 when the Canon 100-400L II came out, but that was as much about form factor as anything.

I'll go with the Tamron to save money. . .And for all of the "ever so slightly" differences you mentioned, I will "ever so slightly" adjust for them in post production. . .Easy to do if you're careful and use an "ever so slightly" amount of visual and artistic talent. Nice review!

I am very impressed by the Tamrons IQ. For a lens at this price point to go head to head with the Canon and still come out a tie IMHO.. Be hard to not want to get it. Nice video Dustin.

It's pretty shocking how well these much cheaper third party lenses are competing optically.

They made a good trade off: small glass + good VC over big glass. I'd rather have the smaller glass and expose longer with VC because it's obviously cheaper and easier to carry that way. If you look at the diagram on Tamrons website the glass in the barrel is quite small, but who cares if it does a great job. I bet it will suffer when trying to auto-focus in low light though! It's a similar problem with the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM - works great until it gets dark.

Very nice lens! I have had the 150-600 G2 for a few months and am quite impressed with it! But, since I own a 70-200 L version II, I doubt I would have any need for the 100-400, as the 70-200 is superb with both of the version III extenders.

Very impressive results for such a cheap 100-400! I would love to see an E Mount version of this sens some day. It seems 100-400mm lenses of the current generation are all a step above the older designs. I didn't expect the 100-400m mk 2 from Canon to lose it's edge so early.

Thanks for this. I have been waiting since your last review on this lens for a follow up. I shoot wildlife and my go to set up is currently a Nikon 200-400mm on the D500. I have been wanting a little lighter lens in the 100-400 range as a convenient carry around lens. I have been hoping this is the one. I own the Tamron trinity lenses (not the G2 versions), but I have been very happy with them. It looks like this Tammy will be no different. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the very detailed review on this lens. I have a question, out of the Tamron 100-400 and the Tamron 70-210 f4, which would you say has better optical performance or is there even a dedicated winner?

I would say the optical performance is more similar than different. The F4 lens will have an aperture advantage throughout, obviously, and more shallow depth of field at maximum aperture at equivalent focal lengths. The 100-400mm has the better focal length for distance shooting, obviously.

This one has me pretty excited, since I had a change of heart on switching from Canon to Fujifilm systems. After getting a great deal on a refurbed 80D which I really like, and always wanting a full frame, I went against public consensus and bought the new 6D MkII. B&H has a great Black Friday deal which gave me a free vertical grip, battery, SD card, camera case, and photo paper at a savings of almost $700. This 100-400 will be a great lens on either body I believe, so I can't wait for the final results. But, it's still on pre-order status at B&H.

Yes I agree. On their website Canon has the 6D Mk II body marked down from $1,999 to $1,699 and includes the $209 vertical grip free, along with 13 months of accident insurance. Then B&H throws in the four goodies worth $180 to top it off. I was going to get the body after the first of the year but couldn't pass this up. The 80D I got refurbished from Canon for $679.15 as opposed to $1,099 new at the time, and I can't tell that it was ever used at all. Then I ran across a perfect 24-105mm for almost half price on eBay. I have been very lucky lately.

Both of them are excellent. I do like that the Tamron has better light transmission, and it definitely has the better autofocus speed for tracking.

Very informative and detailed as always Dustin, thank you. Been following and enjoying your reviews for a while now, and i would like to make a request. The request came up cause you reviewed the Sigma 100-400mm few months back and i am looking in to buying either that or the Tamron for my new D750. I own the 35mm f/1.8 and the 24-70mm f/2.8 G2, and i am very pleased with the latest Tamron creations in all aspects. Was waiting anxiously for the 100-400m and hoped it was going to be just as good but without the known issues Sigma lenses have with Autofocus and Tracking. The AF part you will cover shortly, i know, but regarding the image quality between the two, how are we going to compare them since you don't have the Sigma at hand any more? And getting to the point, i'd like to see some(1-2 maybe?) consistent photos taken with each lens you review. So we can go back to each video, 1 or 2 years later maybe, and have a rough idea of how the lenses compare to each other.

I'm waiting for this review for a long time and finally Dustin brings this for us. And fortunately this lens shows what I was expected for. This will be my upgrade for my much-loved 70-300 VC. Hopefully the VC and focus speed will be as good as the optics. My question is: Is there any real difference in picture quality, focus speed between Tamron 18-400 and 100-400? Is it worth to buy two lenses (Sigma 24-105 and Tamron 100-400) instead of Tamron 18-400 or spend my money for a prime or fast zoom (e.g. Sigma 18-35/1.8)?

There's a huge difference in image quality between the 18-400 and 100-400...as there should be.

Great review Dustin. Wanted to bring this lens back up into discussion now it's been a couple years later and you feel it does on APS-C like my 80d verse other long telephotos. I have a 55-250 stm now which is generally regarded as being very sharp, so would this be an improvement of any kind or would it be more for a reach standpoint? Thank you! A small small improvement would still be considered worthy to me to upgrade if it meant longer reach and even better IQ /sharpness

Aweome video! I would also love to see a detailed teleconverter comparison. Native Canon vs Sigma Vs Tamron. Would be nice to have a reference on how much IQ degrades exactly if you put one on. Would mean a lot for those of us who really can`t gamble on buying something and then not like it :)

Hi Dustin thanks for your exhaustive review on this lens. Did you calibrated this lens with the Tap-in console? I just got a Nikon copy for my D500 and some pictures doesn't look as sharp as I expected, is it common on new Tamron lenses? ù Thanks for your attention Greg

I did calibrate it, though it didn't need much in my combination. Put the lens on a tripod and use Live View focus and see if the sharpness is what you expected. If it is, then you have a focus issue. If it still doesn't satisfy you, then the lens isn't going to be as sharp as your expectations.

Hey Dustin! Thanks for this great review! I've decided I'd like to replace my 70-200 with a 100-400 because that focal length seems to fit my style much better. How would this lens compare in image quality to the Tamron 70-200 di vc usd g2? Any idea why the 70-200 is more expensive?

The 70-200 G2 is more expensive because it is an F2.8 lens (more expensive to engineer) and has a higher grade of build quality.

The G2 is sharper over the equivalent range at equivalent apertures.

I honestly don't think there is a real winner. There's give and take with both. I don't think you can lose either way.

Not necessarily. I felt the Tamron was equally sharp in most scenarios.

Hi Dustin I almost bought the sigma 100-400 and I saw your review and other review and most of them complaining about Speed. So I did not buy it. How is the tamron in that regard especially with fast moving objects like birds

For landscape photography, would you recommend the 100-400 or the 70-210 f4? Which has better IQ at 200mm?

John, at landscape apertures you would be hard-pressed to tell a difference. Buy for what your priority is: do you want the wider aperture and wider focal length, or do you want the longer focal range? They are both plenty sharp for your application.

Did you needed to do a firmware update for this lens or on your camera for the lens to work?

I didn’t, but your camera model may be different. Purchasing the Tap In console is a good idea because you can do firmware updates at home

13:00 IN most cases (in my tests) using a lens without TC is always generally going to be sharper, however using the TC with the 70-200 in this case didn't degrade the image too much. I mean the 100-400 is sharper but zoomed out (at viewing distance), it woulid be harder to ditinguish the two.

The Tamron focuses better, in my experience, but they are both sharp.

Thanks a lot Dustin. I was just going to ask you about this question. But how about in the dim environment, just like in the concert or sunset with a close-up shot. Do you think 'tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2' is better or tamron 100-400 can handle it? Sincerely from Taiwan.

Lenses with faster apertures focus better in low light conditions, but I did find the 100-400 did okay. You will have to crank the ISO, though.

Optically I suspect it is better, though I don't shoot Nikon and am just going off the feedback I've had from others.

I do think the Sigma Sport version has a bit of an optical edge, but it is also really, really heavy.

Sorry. The 150-600 G2 is still very strong at 400mm. I suspect that they are roughly similar, but I haven't compared them side by side. I have compared to the Canon, however, and the 150-600 G2 was very close at 400mm

Were the images shot on a crop sensor camera if not what would the difference be . Or would the crop sensor lose some quality.

This was shot on full frame. The answer to your question really depends on the resolution of the APS-C camera. They often have higher pixel density, but that isn't a guarantee.

Nice review. Will the old Canon 400mm f/5.6 sharpness still out perform this lens at 400mm? I wonder the new technology of Tamron may have caught up. Like the idea of VC technology and price. Looking at the two lenses closely for purchase in the future.

I think the Canon still does very well and is sharper, though by a small margin. Real world results will probably favor the Tamron due to the VC, though.

Dustin Abbott exterior build quality is one thing, but unless a lens is dismantled entirely, it's hard to tell. A good example was the first version Tamron 24-70, the insides were junk. Anyway, thanks for the great review.

It's mostly about time. I don't shoot Nikon, and I don't have time to add another system. That being said, I am in the process of reviewing the D850 thanks to a viewer.

This lens is optically much better than the 70-300, though I do really like that lens. This lens also has much better autofocus, better build, and works much nicer mechanically.

I think the biggest disadvantage of the tamron is the F 6.3 at 400 mm. This means that when using a 1,4 converter there will be no autofokus at 400 mm (560mm).....

I wouldn't say that there is no autofocus (that will depend on the camera body), but I wouldn't expect brilliant AF performance.

Dustin Abbott Yeah thats what I mean. Right now I am testing my 6DII with the Canon 100-400 and the 1.4 converter and the autofocus works really well for sports and wildlife with the remaining 15 autofocus points. I dont think that this would be possible with the Tamron lens.

It will be possible with the Tamron 1.4x on your 6DII I haven't tested how good it will be, though.

Dustin Abbott Beyond F8 only the center point will autofocus I think. A major downside compared with the Canon lens.

It's really awesome to listen to (and learn from) your English, which reminds me a lot of the kind of English that my North American teacher speaks and has taught me to speak, as well. Regarding the Tamron 100-400 lens, could you take a look at these charts here: bit.ly/2lZzH1A The lab test indicates that the Tamron is incredibly, intolerably soft, yet your review proves the opposite. In the same lab, the Sigma is indeed as sharp or even sharper than the Canon, which your testing confirms. What do you think about it, could it be that they have a faulty sample over at the digital picture? I like the Tamron and would really like to buy one, but the test result scares me, to be honest.

Wow - that's a unique perspective. I think most people would find issue with your argument, however. Why not just shoot a great 50mm lens and crop even more :)
