I was fortunate enough to get an early copy and realized it was made in Vietnam but the build quality seems similar to the 28-75/2.8 which is made in Japan. It looks like Tamron has a good QC system. Nice stills and videos of Angkor wat and Vietnam. Are you still in Vietnam? Is it your first trip? Hope you’re having a good trip. Separately, I’ve seen your reviews of GH5, A73, S1H series (all cams I own). Do you plan on doing a review on EOS R?

Thank you, I am back in Europe, but it was very nice there. 28-75 is made in China, but it doesn't matter at all nowadays. I don't intend to make EOS R review at the moment.

Agree with your review. I shot an interior event using this lens, with the Sony FE35F1.8 and Zeiss 55. The photos from the Tamron 1728 do not look out of place next to those taken with the primes. although the Zeiss 55 is just that little bit sharper with more contrast. An excellent wide angle zoom indeed.

I think YOU may be the #1 lens reviewer period! Your videos capture great multiple shots in low light and daylight as well. That is ultra important to note when a person is looking to make a new lens purchase and appreciates the comparisson.

Your advice and opinions are always invaluable but I am particularly happy with this glowing report as my long awaited copy of this lens will be in my hands fairly soon. It has constantly been out of stock! I am excited to see for myself if this lens performs as well as the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 which continues to impress me. I also enjoyed your little 24 GM mini review as I ended up grabbing that lens while waiting for the Tamron to come in ( my justification for buying, ha,ha!) It truly is a fantastic lens and worth the extra money.

When looking at the picture and frame (on the right wall), and also at the box, the Tamron image seems to be distorted a bit. Is that the case or it's the way you cut the image for the comparison? 4:48. Great video, thank you!

The first this I saw was Angkor Wat, would like to visit it. Vietnam is amazing was there earlier this year. The 17-28mm looks like a perfect travel lens.

I have it with a7c. Superb lens for photos and videos. I combined it with 70-300 from Tamron as well. Good macro and clarity, sharpness. It is fantastic for close up and landscape.

Just watched this excellent review again! Two comments; you didn't seem to use the included hood, at all and also you didn't mention the close focusing abilities of the Tamron , any reasons why? Thanks . I am going to watch your comparison of the Sony 24GM to the 28 f2 next!

I didn't use the lens hood because I wanted to minimize the size of the gear that I was carrying around. It is very shallow anyways and it wouldn't make much difference. Close focusing capabilities are great, but I don't think that many people will use that on ultra-wide lens, so I didn't include that... no particular reason.

Great review as always . I really appreciate the quality content you put out . How is the resolving power of these lenses if paired with A7r series . I have 28-75 on a7ii and it works well. Planning to upgrade to r series and interested to know how it works with that setup .

Great review. Here in 2024 is there a single zoom lens that you would consider for travel purposes of great IQ that falls within 16-20 at the wide end, and 60-80 at the long end, and fixed max aperture f2.8 up to f4? I have the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 but looking for something with a bit more range but similar quality. Thank you in advance..!

I think that everyone will mind to be honest. IBIS in Sony cameras is not sufficient for those focal lengths.

@@TheHybridShooter Might be a deal breaker for people indeed. Also missing the 200mm could be a thing too. From what I saw the good things are probably it's price, image quality and size. Bad things are then no stabilization, no 200 mm ?

Both are usable for vlogging. You will get nicer look with 24mm GM, Tamron 17-28 will give you more flexibility, so it depends on your preferences.

I just ordered the Sony a7IV. I'm thinking about this lens for 4K/60 that has the crop. Manly for gimbal use. Or would you suggest an APS-C lens?

It is a pretty good choice for 4K 60p. 25,5-42mm equivalent is pretty useful. I don't recommend buying APS-C lenses for A7 IV.

It is very different type of lens, so it depends on what you are looking for.

One is a zoom lens, the other is prime lens, so it depends on whether you prefer flexibility or optical qualities.

One is standard zoom and the other one is ultra-wide, so they are completely different. Get standard zoom first if you don’t have one.

Getting A7 III with Tamron 28-75 is probably the best choice in that case.

Can you test this lens on an A7iv? I had the 28-75 on my A7iii and is was fine. However when mounted on my A7iv I realised that already midframe sharpness was rubbish on that lens. So I sold it. Was hoping that the new Sigma 24-70 would have better sharpness. However the first reviews I have seen of that lens are not good regarding corner sharpness. It seem like there are no zooms on the market that hold up for architecture and landscape photography.

If you mean A7R IV, I don't have one, so I can't do that. That sensor is very demanding, so you will probably have to go with primes for that one if you want to use all of the potential.

It will but the focal range will be a bit awkward.

I think it will be a perfect focal length for aps-c at 25-42 - thats like wide to normal and the fact that its internal zoom and a nice size which makes it perfect for gimbal use. Most people will probably want to do the gimbal shots at wider to normal than at longer arrower focal lengths.

There is problem in Tamron 17-28 from it's birth .. the af is not trustworthy.. af point dissapper many times u need too switch on and off for AF point reappear.. many times af point pick nearest thing.. better too go on Sony native lens ..
