All the other reviews throw this lens on an expensive full frame camera. What I continue to appreciate about this channel is the consideration for hobbyist photographers. Despite this lens being full frame compatible you threw it straight on an A6100.

yep! and it looks great on APSC. i have the older version and it's amazing. on APSC it becomes a 95-450mm lens. i've used mine several times for photos and video of the moon, and most recently for the total solar eclipse in Dallas. if you use clear image zoom, you can get up to 900mm and the quality still looks amazing. the older tamron lens cost me $499 but it doesn't have stabilization.

Thanks Arthur! I'm on the cusp of getting my first "real" camera (not a cellphone or pocket P&S), probably an a6700 with the 18-300 as my first lens. Your reviews have been a great help in choosing a brand and format (Sony APS-C), as well as a plan for lens choices as time (and the available funds) goes by and my skills progress. The plan for future lenses, subject to change, is (in order) the Sigma 10-18mm 2.8, Tamron 17-70mm 2.8, Sony 70-350 or Tamron 50-400 (leaning towards the Tamron), Sony 11mm F1.8, and either the Sony 15mm 1.4 or Sigma 16mm 1.4. Eventually I'll get the big bazooka, the 200-600. Main focus is aircraft/airshow shots, and museum/travel documentation.
@ckdesignlab
@ckdesignlab Месяц назад
don't get the 18-300. there are known issues. i have the Sigma 16mm 1.4, Tamron 17-70 2.8, and the older version of the Tamron 70-300. All three are fabulous lenses and covers all the range i need from wide to telephoto. Next on my list is maybe a 50mm or 85mm prime lens. if you are just beginning with your first camera, i would highly recommend the Tamron 17-70 2.8 lens. it's a great focal range and very affordable, plus it also has stabilization built in.
@TheRiehlThing42
@TheRiehlThing42 Месяц назад
I have an a6700, got it first day it was out. I borrowed a Tamron 17-70mm 2.8 at a photo meet up from the Tamron USA representative there, and fell in love with it. It has become my go to lens for shoots with people in them. I highly recommend that lens first. You will get a lot of range of photo styles out of it. I had the 70-350mm Sony on my last camera, the a6000, and I don't use it as often, but I recently used it at a waterfall shoot with models. I was able to zoom in, get great shots, while staying at a distance that my lens didn't get covered in spray from the waterfall. I've used it for catching surfers at the Oregon coast, and wildlife. It is a great all around lens too. Those two lenses will cover you for a lot most of what you'll shoot. After that, round out with some prime lenses. I wandered around NYC with my Sony a6000 with a 20mm pancake lens on it, along with a 35mm and a 50mm primes in one shorts pocket, and then the camera fit in my other pocket when I wasn't shooting. I probably take the 50mm out the least amount out of my primes. For some landscape and definitely for Milky Way shots, I'll use a Rokinon 12mm Ultra wide lens.

I personally wouldnt go with the tamron 50-400mm out of its sheer size and weight. It being nearly twice as heavy as the sony 70-350mm means using it for longer periods of time will be less enjoyable. (Even 500 grams really matter here) And the sony is cheaper, which is always nice.

Dont listen to people who advise you not to buy Tamron 18-300. Its the ultimate beginner lens, you can do everything with it, learn to shoot on a widest variety of focal lenghts. If you are a smartphone shooter you will be stunned with IQ. Learn what you need and then decide what to buy next. Dont repeat a common mistake of Gear Aquisition Syndrome - buying stuff that you dont really need/use just coz someone on YT said its good.

@@m4rcin847 Amateurs need to learn lenses. A Tamron "kit" lens at 18-300 breaks the bank and it's overkill frankly. Plus it's an old lens that has lots of flaws. It's also too heavy for an amateur.

This may be my next photo purchase to replace my Tamron 70-300 . I love my 70-300 but definitely this one is an improvement . The fact that it has a lens lock and stabilization is almost reason enough to put in a pre order! I love using my 70- 300 on my A6700 for travel as it is such a lightweight set up. With this new lens going as wide as 50mm , I could see pairing it with my Tamron 20-40 as a two lens kit.

It would be like buying an other 70-300 to get the new 50-300. I asking myself also to maybe find a 35 1.8 prime instead. I use the telephoto for distance subject so 70 is ok. Having a f1.8 in the kit for non distorted photo and video could be a good choice.

I bought the older Tamron 70-300 lens three years ago for $499 on Amazon and really love it. I thought I would miss having stabilization since I have a Sony a6300, but because it's a telephoto lens, I mostly mount this on a tripod for moon photos and videos (which look amazing on APSC) and photos and video I shot of the total solar eclipse here in Dallas back in April. It's great for shooting wildlife as well. The images and video look great for a lens at this price and it's light for a lens this size. I just wish it had a zoom lock switch but I can't complain for a $500 lens this good.

I always hear/read differing opinions on if the lens stabilization in third party lenses truly does sync with the IBIS in Sony bodies. Wish I could get a conclusive answer, as the IBIS alone in my a7R IV is quite lacking, and having the VC system in a lens like this could be a huge help, especially in APS-C mode, which I use frequently.

Hi Arthur. As usual, very detail, professional, and concise review supported with enough sample images to help someone to decide whether to go ahead with purchasing this lens or not. However, there is one very important details that I suggest you may include into your reviews, or at least to try it out with all new lenses silently: how lenses behave with filters. The reason for that is my Tamron 18-300mm lens that I use with my a6400 camera. The lens is outstanding quality, sharp images, generally this lens is on my camera for 80% of time. However, there is one major flow: as soon as you put any filter (ND, polarized, UV, etc.), no matter how quality the filter is, the images become useless, mostly blurry. I tried the same filters on my other lenses and cameras, they work just fine. But there is some issue that this lens (Tamron 18-300mm) has with usage of filters. The lens you tested today is another one from the Tamron family, therefore I am really curious if the filter issue remains the same with this lens.

Missing a couple switches (custom 1-2, VC modes), and a good chunk smaller and lighter. 1cm narrower, 33mm shorter, and 490g lighter (42% lighter). Clearly a more budget lens, with fewer premiums, although also good travel or hiking lens for those that don't want to carry their bazooka around. Prior to this lens I might have recommended the 18-300 as a travel or hiking lens even for full frame users (especially if you have 33 or 50mp Sony), but this lens complicates things. The 50mm not-so-wide angle might not be as useful for landscape, but one can always go vertical and make panoramas.
