Fantastic Dustin. I'm really interested in this lens and I'm looking forward to your review on it. As usual, your reviews just keep getting better and better. Thanks for the effort and work you put into them.
When It comes to making a lens buying decision , I trust DA the most , he understands the technology so well and explains it in such simple words that after watching his reviews you know what you want . thanks @DustinAbbott
Top work Dustin as always, I had the original when it came out and updated it for the 100-400mk2 Canon when it came out, sure this one will be a terrific lens
On the official Tamron site, they state that the G2 is now constructed from metal. Can you confirm this? I own and have been using the G1 now for over 18 months and am quite satisfied with performance especially when compared to the enormous cost of the Nikons 500-600 F/4's. What I'm excited about mostly is the new TC 1.4 and 2.0 that's available for the G2. For me, this is the game changer. Despite shooting with a crop sensor Nikon D7200 for birds, I demand more reach.
It is definitely made of a lightweight metal much like the SP primes. It's definitely a very improved build in every facet. I cover that in the final review that I shot today.
Fantastic Dustin! You have several very interesting projects going on now! I will be very interested in your comparison between the Canon 100 - 400 ii and this lens. I think you also use the Canon lens with the 1.4 extender on occasion. The autofocus upgrade to the 5d iv has been fantastic for this combo! Do you also have the new Tamron extender available for testing? It would be very nice if you would be able to include these extenders in your upcoming comparison. Either way, I am very much looking forward to your upcoming reviews. Enjoy! Greetings, Dirk from Spain
Dirk, I hope to bring the lens back in for that comparison in a bit. This particular review is going to be a quick comparison of the two Tamron lenses as I have to return them to Tamron today (I only had them for a week). I'll be doing another later review for a magazine here in Canada, though, and I'll get another copy (I want to review a different copy then to have a little sample variation).
Looking forward to your full review, I had the G1 of this lens and sold it once I picked up my Canon 500 f/4 prime. But I do miss the convenience of this zoom range and size for hikes. While the G1 preformed great on my FF 5DIII, I just couldn't seem to duplicate the results on my 7DII and a fellow photographer with the same cameras had the same issue. So I hope to see this G2 reviewed on a crop body if possible, thanks Dustin for doing your great reviews!
I'll get a longer look at it in a month or so. I only had a week this time and focused on the differences from the V1 and tested it on a 5D Mark IV. Perhaps I'll make the next review APS-C specific.
So... that's the secret to your fitness...8 km photo walks. lol. Another brilliant video review of a very tempting product. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
I really like your video's, your story is straight to the point! Beside that you take time to discuss all the parts of the products. I just subscribed ;)
Thank you very much for this initial impressions -- your reviews based on real life photographic experiences are always more significant to a lot of people than charts and numbers. Keep up the excellent work! If possible, I'm curious to know how this lens performs on a Canon M3 (or M5 when you get one) with the adapter, a review like this would be really useful.
Hi Dustin! I have a question. Is 150-600mm G2 has a focus breading? I think I an ready to buy one. Do you have a link where I can buy this lens so you can get your small share?
I would say that there is a small amount of focus breathing, but they have improved both minimum focus distance and maximum magnification, so you are getting a better result. Here's a link to B&H: bhpho.to/2eeKZeG or to Amazon: amzn.to/2l6exMZ. Thanks for your kindness!
Dustin , This looks like an awesome lens. My question is , I shoot with a 7D and I have to shoot off a tripod most of the time due to early stages of Parkinson's. Is there any reason why I could not be just as well off with the first generation Tamron 150-600 ?? Thanks
You mentioned that you could tweak different things within the lens. Does it have a micro USB port to do this on a computer with or what? And where do I go to look up this to attach it to an app or what have you?
@@DustinAbbottTWI I just found the tamron brand same as the one you sent me for 44 from Amazon. I'm going to go ahead and pick one up do you know of any tutorials on how to use it not mechanically but technically...?
Initially I pointed them to reviews I had done of lenses I had purchased to showcase what I could do. They must have liked it, as I got a start and now it is typically the brands that approach me, not the other way around.
Top notch intro- as I have come to expect from you. Eagerly anticipating your comments on usage with APSC and if possible APSC+1.4TC (I assume lens system mimics F8). Please consider APSC comparison between 100-400 II w-w/o 1.4TC and G2. What are the FL break points as the lens moves from 5.0 to 5.6 to 6.3 (the G1 did better in this regard that the Sigmas)?
I'm afraid the APS-C coverage will have to wait until my second round with the lens. I only had it for a very busy week and had to focus on full frame and comparing it to the V1 of the lens. I'm scheduled to get another copy in a few weeks, though. I did test the variable aperture points, however.
great video. I want to purchase a lens for bird shooting. I m using 80d currently. wondering which setup gives me sharper and contrasty image at the rear end of focal length. 1- 80d + canon 100-400 IS L (second hand under 1K USD) + canon 1.4x ( second hand 200 USD) or 2- 80d + tamron 150-600 G2
Destin any problems with the lens hood loosening up on this tamron lens as on one of the reviews of it on adorama a gentlemen had this situation and asked tamron to correct it. Thanks!
Did he have a problem with a first gen or a G2 lens hood? I didn't notice any kind of issue. That would probably come down to a way that a person carried the lens (harness or strap). I carried it in a Cotton Carrier a lot and never had any issue with the lens hood shifting on me.
Not so simple. You still have to determine the values to plug in. The Tap In will allow you to write those values to the lens, but you still have to perform calibration and figure out the appropriate values to plug in.
Thanks Dustin for a nice presentation of a great lens I had the original version and replaced it with sigma 150-600mm S i also tested the Nikon 200-500mm was the Siggy better than Tammy yes it was but Also almoast one kilogram heavier this new Tamron has similar Sigma usb doking station perhaps Sigma will launch its v 2 of 150-600mm S line
hi Dustin, as this lens is a third party lens to canon camera. I am using canon 7d mark 2 so will i get the full advantage of 7d mark 2 autofocus i mean will i get the all focus point?
Dustin here is what the man had to say about his hood problem.Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2, my first impressionBy Retz J. - Hobbyist I had a planned trip to the Smokies in Tennessee, this one of the main reasons I ordered the lens plus other activities, I used it on my trip and I really enjoyed, I like the fact that it fits easily on my gimbal head tripod, my deer pictures at 400 feet were very sharp and clear, the only one problem is that the lens hood does not fit tight enough on the lens and it comes off very easily, I hope Tamron can come up with a solution.
Probably he got a lemon of a hood? who knows? will look at your most recent post on the tamron g2 lens and decide weather or not I will order it. Unfortunat ely the canon 100-400mm IS II lens is out of my budget at 1999$ and I would have to order a new plate to mount on my vanguard bbh200 tripod for the foote of the canon lens to fit on it, not so with the tamron tripod foote. Thanks for your help.
trying to make up my mind between Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 VC G2 and SIGMA 150-600MM F/5-6.3 would like to know your suggestion as would be a big help thanks
I'm a big fan of the Canon. I like the form factor better, and it is actually sharper with a 1.4x TC (560mm) than the others are at 600mm (though the Canon has a maximum aperture of F8 at that point).
I hope to have another copy in within a month. My supplier could only spare the copy I had in hand for this review for about 6 days, so I chose to focus on the comparison to the V1 this time. I plan to do both a comparison with the 100-400L II (easy, since I own one) next time along with a crop sensor review.

Thank you Dustin. Let's wait for that review. Once again congratulations.
For sure. It's really hard to get a sense of a lens in a shop, though (particularly one where you need some room to work with!) Nothing like a well calibrated lens used in the right situation to get a sense of real performances.
Dustin Abbott luckily the shops in Tokyo have really long open spaces. I found another shop with the original 150-600mm on a D610 and i found the crop from the D7200 that had the G2 sharper. I'm fairly convinced it is a lot better than the "G1" and intend to buy it at some point.
Haven't used the Nikon. Tamron actually designed the optics for the Nikon model. I suspect the Nikon is the sharper lens considering it has a more limited range. 2.5x instead of 4x zoom range allows them to make less optical compromises.
I'm not sure why you're so down on the Canon L lens pouch. They're great for putting lenses in camera bags on top of other lenses. The Sigma and Lowe Pro pouches are great for earthquake storage but they're too square, too padded, and just too bulky to be useful on a daily basis. On superlong teles like this, the zippered & padded pouches are probably good to keep your lens in the trunk of your car, but I'd rather just get a pelican.
I'm down on them because I've found very little practical purpose for them. I generally don't even take them out of the wrapper. The Sigma cases I actually use. I work with EasyCover, and I use their lens cases for those lenses that don't come with a decent case. They are rounder and don't take up quite as much space as the Sigma ones.
This is probably very difficult to do right for a manufacturer. For example, I personally don't use any of the pouches - all equipment is well protected in my F-Stop bags/ICUs and ready to go at a moments notice. All the pouches stay in the original box until I sell the lens some day. I have No need for any change here. However, I always feel that the lenshoods could use some serious improvement. Except for Zeiss, they all deliver inferior and less confident designs.
Oh, I did want to add that, no matter what my personal opinion on the pouches is, I do very much appreciate Dustin's efforts to push manufacturers to deliver more and higher quality. Thanks Dustin and keep up the excellent work! Dirk
These reviews would be perfect if not for the numerous mentioning of ' and so ' and so' ' and so ' . Obvious a subconcious verbal thing . Can't wait to see a challenge of this lens to the Nikkor 200-500. The most important question would be , is this Tamron at 600mm as sharp as the Nikkor at 500mm because in the end what counts is sharpness over the whole line.
i rented the G2 lens for my canon 80d, i was eagerly awaiting this lens, and im not impressed. almost every pic i took is out of focus, it hunts for focus alot. my kit lens takes sharper pics. if i need to correct the focus using a usb dock spending 60bucks to manually correct something that should be done by the company, this is not the lens for me. i rented the canon 100-400 L ii and took amazing pics. i want simple, not having to configure settings after spending 1400 bucks. good review and i like your channel but those are my thoughts.
Interesting. Most of the photos I share in my gallery I took right after taking delivery of a lens (literally minutes before) and I didn't have a change to calibrate it. Your experience certainly wasn't mine.
thanks for the response. yeah i saw pics posted on the facebook page for tamron 150-600 and was like wow. so im not sure what is wrong. going tomorrow again hoping for better results.
+Paul Harding that is pretty common for a number of new Tamron lenses. They opened a new manufacturing plant in China. It is the reality of globalization. I've noted a similar trend with a number of new Canon lenses made in either Malaysia or Taiwan
only problem i am returning the second copy as the focus is rubbish first one the focus fluttered the other would not lock on anything moving funny how reviewers never mention problems when they get there stuff free. I admit if it worked this lens is amazing but they did not so will not be getting a third. Going back to Sigma
I'm not aware of any reviewers who get their lenses for free. I certainly don't, and I've got a gallery full of images that I personally took without focus issues.
