Tan Kote vs Resolene
Resolene: amzn.to/3PezTmH
Tan Kote: amzn.to/3ytEqvI
Compared to a wax or lacquer finish, Resolene is more water-resistant, but Tan Kote has its own pros and cons. For example, Resolene is an acrylic finish that prevents dye leech and is less attractive than a traditional wax or lacquer finish. However, it is not completely water-resistant. For this reason, some leather workers prefer to use a natural wax or lacquer. Resolene is a more permanent finish that is used on lighter jackets. It is more flexible, and durable than a wax or lacquer finish, but it is less water-resistant. While it's not a water-resistant product, it should last for years. Tan Kote has a satin finish and can be easily buffed to create a higher shine. The most important difference between Resolene and Tan Kote is their water-repellent properties. While Resolene is suitable for tannery leather, it is not suitable for dyed leather. It can also oxidize leather and will show water spots. For this reason, it is better to use Tan Kote on unfinished pieces. A similar type of wax, called Leather Sheen, is also available. Resolene is a thin, water-resistant protective finish based on plant products. It can't seal against water but will give a medium to a glossy finish. It can be used on dyed, antiqued, polished, and dyed leather. For a smoother, more durable finish, use Resolene with Leather Refinish Color Restorer. If you're not sure which product to choose, read our comparison of the two main types of waxes. Resolene is thicker and will need to be diluted with water before applying it to a leather surface. It's best to use Resolene for leatherwork that will be exposed to a lot of water, like saddles. The difference between Resolene and Tan Kote is not as drastic as you might think. Both are equally waterproof. When choosing between these two finishes, make sure to consider the material you want to protect. Resolene is a water-based leather finish that is water-resistant and flexible. It is best for saddles, shoes, and other leather items that need a durable, water-resistant finish. It also allows for dyeing to be applied to any surface. You can use it to dye your leather in any color with the right tools. Once you're satisfied with the results, you can choose the best product for your needs. While Resolene is a permanent finish, it is water-resistant. This means it will protect your leather from water, while providing UV protection. Tandy Super Shene is the only one that offers a medium-shine finish. It's also available in aerosol spray form. Its benefits include UV protection, water-resistant qualities, and high-shine.

I am more confused than I was before watching. Tan Kote is protective, but not very water resistant and Resolene is water resistant but not waterproof?

Sorry for late reply .Tan Kote is a protective top finish but is not completely water-resistant. Water spots will show. If you need a water resistant top finish, use Fiebing's Resolene.

Good evening, I have a question, is it possible to apply oils, balms, creams over these finishes to nourish the leather or do they form a waterproof layer that prevents absorption? Thanks for the reply and thanks for the interesting video!

“While resolene is not greatt for not protecting leather from water, it’s great water protecting qualities are good but not great when compared to tan kote which is why it doesn’t compare with itself. Resolene can protect against water on dyed leather but it will leave water spots cuz it can only be used on leather that has not been dyed unlike tank tote…wait did I say tank tote? What the hell is tank tote? Or is it tan coat? I’m like totally confused lol but I think I might have just confused myself because I like totally knew it and then my mind went blank for a second and now I’m just like totally unsure about what we were talking about lol…I’m just gonna go back to the beginning and hope that it will just come back to me once I get my flow back…okay so resolene is and isn’t good for leather…”

This vid is Utterly pointless contradictory misinformation. I saw else where (after going all round the houses) that tan kote is not quite as permanent, but will allow conditioner through to the leather.! Resolene lasts longer and not so good if you want to condition your leather item regularly. A whole Sunday morning and thats as close as I could get to difference. By the way, another leather mystery is whats the difference between leather protector and leather conditioner~ so far as I can tell they are one and the same thing~ I have seen how to use each separately and in both cases they mix and match protector and conditioner within the same sentence for the same purpose.
