It's a shame the train crew didn't realise Cyril was trying to alert them that there was danger up ahead. What was supposed to be a happy time of the year for many families, became exactly the opposite for them as they'd lost loved ones in this tragedy. To the families of the people who died, Christmas is now another anniversary of the train crash. The young lady who was found deceased and carried into the church, she looked like she was in her 20s.
For those wandering the crash represented here is pretty accurate. The guy tried to warn the train, it's unclear what the crew thought since they died in the accident. Investigators did reveal that the train controls showed they did try to stop but the warning was futile. The distance and speed the train was moving, there was no way for them to stop in time.
3:15 The facial expressions and just the panic in Cyril’s voice really makes the adrenaline pump. R.I.P to those who have passed on that fateful night, those who survived but have passed in recent years, Cyril Ellis, and to those who knew them that had passed.
This sure was very sad and made it even sadder that this happened on Christmas Eve :( Rest in peace all the people we lost when this happened in real life
@JONATHAN DELQUADROOnly one person died in the car that teetered on the bridge after it fell, a girl trapped under her seat who drowned. I think about 151, or something close to that, people were killed in total. Makes me sad thinking about it.
@@BladeofLeona It was 151 people. They were 148 second-class passengers after all five of those coaches fell into the water, that one girl in the leading first class car, the driver, and the fireman.
RIP to everyone who died in this crash. And kudos to Cyril Ellis (the person depicted here trying to warn the train) and everyone who managed to help rescue some of the survivors after the crash... Ellis had balls of STEEL to go into a train car balanced on the edge and save almost all of the passengers (along with the train guard, William Inglis); he completely deserved the George Medal he got in 1954...
I’m American, I wish we learned more about stuff like this here but when we learn about global history, we focus more on less important topics like the Byzantine empire and spend little time on WW1 and 2, ship disasters, train disasters. It annoys me how we learn about history from thousands of years ago yet we can’t learn about stuff that happened 50-100 years ago.
1:35 for those who don't know, that faint rumbling was the sound of the water from Crater Lake on top of Mount Ruapehu rushing down after the glacier/volcanic ash barrier holding it there gave way. The water then roared into the Whangaehu River and... Well... The rest you already know.
I’m going back to work on Monday so I’ll have a better idea to get all my info from the company to see what they can offer me and I’ll send you a picture of the link and I can see what I see as I think of you guys 😢
Imagine the kids when they hear their mother or father died in a train crash before Christmas day Edit: RIP to all who died in this accident. I hope they are in a better place
I knew very little on this crash. After seeing this I'm just absolutely gobsmacked. The moment the locomotive goes airborne made my stomach drop. And if I was in a coach teetering on the edge on the remains of the bridge I'd probably soil myself. Tons of people requested I do this and I keep thinking "Oh I don't have time cause of family" but after seeing this I might consider. Could you tell me the original source of this scene so I can give proper credit when I start work? And is it copyright free or will I get sued to buggery for using it?
-Feasible notices bridge destruction -tries to warn train -chases train down within seconds of crash. -goes down with tilted carriage -helps other passengers out What a legend
Probably as bloody harrowing as the disaster itself ... This did the lives lost justice as a tribute to them and in their memory. No CGI fest rubbish here but all kept so real without any of that. The more real a film appears the more you can actually 'feel' what is happening good or bad. Should have been released on DVD IMHO ... But wasn't?!
Another thing on my mind about this: I know Cyril Ellis ran in front of the train before it crashed, but was that also him walking into the carriage at 4:39? Or was that somebody else?
I was literally having goosebumps with the whole scene from when the bridge collapsed to the end of the video. And, to how frantic Cyril was to try to stop the train. R.I.P To everyone who perished in this horrific disaster, that should never have happened, and the KA 949.
@@harveyanimations8974 That is unfortunately true. If I remember correctly, it said that the train was going 40mph. Looks like it’s going faster than that but I guess it’s deceiving. Who knows, maybe the train and only a few coaches would fall off but who’s to say. All we know is that this was a tragic incident and while any incident like this during any part of the year is terrible but with it happening around Christmas is just feels more saddening.
@@thewillofabeast9079 I’ve lived in New Zealand my whole life, and at one point I had to write a report in school on this incident. I remember some parts from the research I did. The train was just too big and heavy to have stopped in time, with the momentum it had
@SuperB Buzz how do you know that Nerrisa died on impact cos it showed the scene where she got her jacket and then that's the last we see of her and when her body was found, there wasnt any injures on her body or trauma caused by the debris in the river
At the Karori Cemetery in Wellington there is a memorial for the tangiwai disaster and when i was looking up the memorial online and looked at the names of the people who died, Nerissa's name caught my eye. But why would they put 2 memorials in 2 different places (1 at the site where the accident occurred and 1 in the cemetery)
This is a day in history that loved ones will not forget their experiences or were told about this tragedy by their grandparents we will never forget rest in peace ❤❤❤😢😢
Even if they saw that guy waving the torches, I doubt that train had any time to stop at that speed in time. Seems to me this catastrophe was inevitable. : (
Why have they never released this movie on DVD and/or Blu-ray? They should, and not just in New Zeland, but in many other places worldwide as well, including in America.
Comrade_RR I understand about the copyright. Have you tried DailyMotion, or Google Drive to make your upload more private, and just showing us the link to that?
They did release it, atleast where I live. Our school has a copy and we are studying it but also my family has like 3 copies and alot of friends families do aswell
My maternal grandmother was only 3 years old when this happened. She was born on February 28th, 1950. Edit: One of my uncles died on the exact month and day in the year 2023. He passed away of pneumonia in the hospital.
0:12 I just realized this now and didn't realize this but that's Rose Mclver the actor I know who played as summer landsdown in power rangers rpm and I've seen the show since I'm a power ranger fan can't believe I never realized this til I saw someone said it in a comment
Yeah, and according to a site called Lippy Pictures, her character's name is Nerissa Love. She was a real person, who unfortunately died in this incident, at the age of only 19.
[Narrator] George Shrinks suddenly had a terrible dream. 4:57 He was dreaming that passenger coach fell into the river. 5:03 [splashing into the river, 5:07 people exclaiming, popped out beside him] George Shrinks: [gasps] Ohh, mon dieu! Mom Evans: Ohh... George Shrinks, you okay, kid? Cowlorado Kid: You're looking frightening. George Shrinks: I'm so sorry to hear that, Sara. Jonah: The carriage fell into the river with the drowning passengers. George Shrinks: [whimpers] That'll make me feel frightening. Ted Shackelford MYH: The bridge has being repaired. The express runs on time. That won't happened.
i love how the guy who tried to stop the train was running on the tracks, and when the train got closer, he got off. edit: RIP to everyone who died in this horrible disaster, i hope they are in a better place.
The locomotive accident of 1953 959 is based in the same way as Timothy's accident on the film Ghost Train The untold story of Timothy from Thomas and friends
This is utterly horrifying. 4:08 my heart literally stoped. The sounds of the engine and coaches smashing into the side of the embankment was just so violent. 😢
We flew in planes rode road on trains and cars stayed at home and even went to school, but how do we go on our days fearing that we may go away at any time?
December 24 1953 It was christmas eve and the tangiwai bridge collapsed aftee Mt. Ruapehu (did i spell it right?) erupted in 1945. Causing the back half of the train to be safe. but too late to stop the loco.
I feel like it wouldn't have made a difference, that part of track is straight and long, they'd be running top speed, maybe less people would've died but still
Wait a second I saw you drachinifel's Battle of hampton roads episode now here? Edit: also I hope your pun (you thought it was Merrimac but it was i Virginia) made you proud
They were just confused. They probably thought he was crazy or something, when it’s the dead of night and it happening really quickly, you tend to be more confused then cautious.
@@thewillofabeast9079 That’s why part of the reason behind this terrible wreck has gotta be that they more likely wouldn’t have stopped the train until they saw the raging currents of the river just ahead of them. So a train that long, that close to what would be the the edge of the bridge, and running full steam ahead at 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers/hour), I can understand why we learn what happened this terrible night. Especially to those 151 souls of the 285 on board.
The guards van (second to last carriage) is extremely wrong...because that's a FM class guards van and was introduced in the 1970's but not a lot of the general public would know much about that
4:57 Jonah: While they were in the carriage, [very frightening] it finally gave way and fell into the river! 5:03 [splashing into the river] 5:07 [people exclaimed]
Too add insult to injury the engineer and fireman try to use their weight on the brakes to stop the train but the train was traveling too fast and it was pull 11 damn coaches so the weight mess up the brakes strength to stop or slow down 949 but the accident shouldn't had happened if the engineer didn't ignore the man flagging him down.
Even if he did apply the brakes when he saw Cyril, it still wouldn't have been enough to stop the train from going over the bridge. It was going too fast and was pulling too much weight. If the train was a couple miles away when it happened, then it would've been able to stop on time. But it's still sad :(
@@Gearz-365 Not just that but there are a lot of people who tend to do crazy things, they probably thought he was crazy, unfortunately that wasn’t the case
RIP to all the Passengers that died, the crew, and Locomotive No. 949. If somebody had warned them at the station, this incident wouldn’t have happened.
