Tangled. And I respectfully disagree with your assessment of Mother Gothel as a weak villain. She is the only villain I've ever seen in a children's film which is based on a very real kind of person that a child might come across in their own life: the psychologically abusive adult. Most of us have memories of a psychologically toxic adult from our childhoods. A relative, a teacher, or perhaps even a parent. Part of the reason I prefer Tangled over Frozen is that it has the most realistic villain of any Disney film. She doesn't want to kill Rapunzel or have a big convoluted plan to rule the kingdom. In fact, she is totally indifferent everyone and everything except herself. All she wants is to stay young forever, and she doesn't care who she has to hurt to get what she wants. She's a classic clinical narcissist.
@thisaccountisembarrassingi4429
I think Frollo from Hunchback did the whole "realistic abusive villain" thing better, but Gothel was still a great villain.

Gothel is so good she was actually painful for me to watch the first couple of times around. You see, I had/have an abusive grandmother whose personality is exactly like Gothel's to the point where its beyond creepy. Even the way she "jokes" with rapunzel is the same way my gran bullied my mom.

Rewatching this editorial and giving it some more thought, I'm starting to understand why Tangled is better but Frozen is more popular. Tangled's story was surprisingly mature and realistic and I feel that a lot of young adults could relate to Rapunzel's road to emancipation. But its subtlety and maturity lost its target audience: children. Frozen is a much more appealing movie to a child, visually and narratively. I also have immense respect for Tangled and how they had Rapunzel and Eugene wait before they get married, and I love how they explore that more in the series with getting Eugene to learn to let Rapunzel have her space and live her life.

Tangled > Frozen Reasons imo are: Tangled did most of these elements first and better. Frozen had a terrible storyline that unravelled itself, undeveloped characters, and no back story. Frozen relies on its music, comic relief, and making a girl not rely on a dude. It did have some values like teaching trust BUT Tangeled did it and why doesn't it get any praise. Frozen was just a new Disney princess profit slut to sell merchandise. Its not awful but come on almost everyone raves its a master piece like Beauty and the Beast. No its not a master piece! Its a decent movie at best with catchy songs to sell crap. Tangled is the master piece! TEAM TANGLED!!!!! Sorry to rant an aged veteran at seeing this argument.

I like Frozen, but Tangled definitely wins for me. I liked how manipulative Gothel was, and the little details hidden here and there- every time she shows affection, it's to Rapunzel's hair- ex. "I love you most", notice that she kisses the hair instead of her forehead. (On the flip side, when Flynn is being affectionate, he moves her hair away from her face.) I actually liked Tangled's songs better. "Let it Go" was the only Frozen song I really enjoyed and really remember, aside from maybe "Do You Want to Build a Snowman". I find Flynn and Rapunzel to be some of the funniest and most heartwarming characters I've ever seen come out of Disney- Flynn especially. I don't really know why, but to me, Anna and Kristoff just don't measure up. Elsa does, but the movie doesn't really focus as much on her as much. Last but not least, the animation. I love winter. I love ice. The scenes where Elsa does magic are "Rise of the Guardians" level of beautiful. But again, other that a few scenes,
@theonegoldengryphon
@theonegoldengryphon 8 лет назад
We don't get to see what she can really do. On the other hand, Tangled is constantly showing us eye-popping visuals. From the glowing flower, to the castle on the lake, to Rapunzel's hair glowing, to the scene when Flynn first sees the tower- I could go on, but I really want to focus on one thing- THE LANTERN SCENE. That scene is what made me want to be an animator. The soft lights, the boat seeming to be the only thing on the water surrounded by glowing lanterns, Flynn and Rapunzel- and oh my gosh "At Last I See the Light"... **ahem** sorry. Started fangirling for a second. Either way, thanks for reading my massive walls of texts, but that's why I like Tangled better than Frozen.

I am "Team" tangled, here are some reasons why: - It's HILARIOUS - Gothel is one of the most realistic villains of Disney, she's an abusive mom who probably has a mental illness - I LOVE the message, it literally says you can make your dreams true, you can be yourself, you're strong, that you can grow and fight your fears and that you shouldn't judge people by their Appearance if that's not powerful than I don't know what is - The love story is so pure and honest - the animation is amazing (especially the latern scene, it blows my mind every time and I think it's one of my favorite movie scenes EVER) - little Rapunzel is the cutest thing existing - the songs are really good and funny at the same time - I love how you can see Rapunzel growing into an independent woman - Flynn also has an amazing character development And these are only a few Rapunzel is definitely my favorite Disney movie of all time and it's really underrated

Second she was a abusive mother on all accounts, she lied and exploited Rapunzel and was only a caring mother to Rapunzel so she could make her stay in that tower as long as possible without question. Third she didn't find all that out in twenty-four hours, she only found out when she had obvious hints that she wasn't her mother, heck even if she didn't find out that Gothel wasn't her mother, she would still know that she is an awful person. The only thing she wanted was to stay young, she was a bad person through and through. And most people in this comment section is on "Yangled" side... so I did rethink, and i still believe "Tangled" is better :P Mainly because it is way more subtle at fighting the tropes, company set ages ago, and at the same time telling most basic story about love as you could possibly get... "Frozen"... "Frozen" has too much femminist propaganda in it for me to enjoy- and femminism is fucking everything up, because of a lot of things(too many to count- if you want me to list them, fine. I`ll fite ye)- and they ain`t even subtle about it. Just plain, as day "out with the old, in with the new"... "Tangled" is way more basic, but in a good way. What boy, or girl wouldn`t like to be one of those heroes? And basic stories are basic for a good fucking reason- for thousands of years men and women yearned for certain things, and tossing that out of the window, so few critics could praise, how "it breaks the mold" is plainly fucking idiotic. Imagine some action movie, where the guy fights for a woman, bleeds for her, risk his life, kill people- only for her to chose another guy at the end... I think Frozen is okay, it has a good message, but it’s very overrated. I prefer Tangled because I thinks it does a really great job at being both hilarious and yet pulling on your heart strings a bit too. Arguably, Tangled doesn’t have the same highly relatable message as Frozen, but I think Tangled can still be relatable for a lot of people. For instance, I like to relate Repunzel’s “mother” to mental illness being the thing that keeps many people locked away in isolation like Repunzel, but that might be a stretch.

@@christianguerrero70 Firstly, Rapunzel didn't fall in love with Eugene when they met, it was actually the other way around. Even then it was just attraction for her but because the fact that she hindered his escaped knocked that attraction to the back seat. But it's clear to anyone with fucking eyes that from the moment he saw her, he thought she was beautiful. Now Rapunzel on the other hand, she started to show genuine interest in Eugene once he started to be more sincere and open up to her. Also, I think it's fair for her to form an attachment to someone who saved her and became her ally. Tangled also has stunning visuals despite being the first CGI animated princess movie, such as Raps's hair, the flora and background, etc. Believe it or not, there are real people like Mother Gothel out there that lack the ability to form attachments to others as well show sympathy. Bro she is literally the definition of a psychopath. She is also literally a narcissist?? The whole reason she stole Raps is because she was infused with the flower that kept her young and it wasn't like she could take a piece of her-- it was either all or none. Plus she had no remorse for stealing someone else's child. Which is absolutely horrible. When Rapunzel was still ignorant of her mother's true self, she showed a lot of conflict over initially leaving the castle: enjoying the outside world but also resorting to self-deprecating thoughts that she was bad and terrible for disobeying. But once she learn how despicable Mother Gothel truly was, she knew needed to get away asap. ALSO, she didn't even kill Gothel?? Gothel was at fault to her own death? Rapunzel just wanted to heal Eugene but he cut her hair and the effect of the flower wore off thus making Gothel her true age (which is fucking ancient) thus explaining why she literally decayed and dissipated. I would fucking chuck her out my mind too if I found out my mother wasn't actually my mother and kidnapped me from my true family, isolated me in a skyscraper, cutting off all human contact besides her, learning that she only actually cared about my magical hair, manipulate me, and then try to kidnap me AGAIN and literally tried to murder someone I cared about. Bitch, that's called trauma. That.That is why Tangled is better. Beautiful visuals and a compelling twist on a story old as time. Plus Rapunzel is so sweet?

See, the thing about Frozen, is that they were so busy trying to set up plot twists...that they didn't actually set up the plot. They were so busy trying to set up the Duke as the actual villain, they made the real villain weak. When all he had to do to win was 'do noting', and he failed that then you've officially written yourself into a corner. Seriously, the guards were going to kill Elsa, and they would've been hailed as herons for doing so. So what did Hans gain from stopping them? The same thing can be said for the romance, like it or not Anna was engaged for most of the story. So, even if you like the basic 'disney man disrespects disney woman until they fall in love' trope, by the time Anna and Christophe got together it felt rushed, ironically. It doesn't help by the time they met the trolls, the first thing they did was almost get married. Seriously, for a movie trying to lampshade rushed romances, they had he most rushed relationships. Oh I know, maybe the selling point is the sisterly relationship! ..except, Anna's childhood memories are wiped for some reason, and the girls didn't interact growing up. Afterwards the biggest interactions they had was talking about chocolate, and Elsa siccing her snow monster on Anna. Such love, much development. By the time the plot ended, and their 'love' saved the day, it felt like they were practically strangers! Frozen was so busy trying to define what it wasn't, that it didn't truly develop what it WAS. There's a reason why people can only talk about "Let it Go". Because that's the only thing it has going for it. Now, comparing the two movies. Tangled has better art. The characters move more animatedly, there's more action scenes, and more COLORS. Yeah, while Tangled has fantastic visuals, like Rapunzel's hair, the lantern scene, and the bright flora. Frozen has white, white, and more white. The villain is better. In Tangled they cover the abusive manipulative relationship that can happen between mother and child. Everyone is so busy trying to create a Stockholm scenario in Beauty and the Beast, but they're ignoring the ACTUAL case in Tangled. Now, in Frozen, they had Hans. Who, as I've mentioned before, has motivations all over the place. Why did he genuinely smile after Anna if he hated her? (Keep in mind, this was after she left, and no one else was around. The only thing he had to prove was to the audience. I don't have to go over why that's bad writing, do I?) Why did he save Elsa if he wanted her dead? After the initial shock, he becomes weak, thus ruining the rewatchibility. The characters were better in Tangled. We had good motivations from everyone, we has fun interactions with the background characters. We got to see Rapunzel and especially Eugene grow and mature right in front of our eyes. In comparison, the characters in Frozen was more rigid. Elsa locks herself way until he realizes she loves Anna in the third act, despite hardly interacting with her. Christophe is an asshole, until he realizes he loves Anna in the third act, despite hardly respecting her. And Hans loves Anna, until the third act, even if it makes no sense. Are you seeing a pattern here? There was no real organic growth. It felt like things happened, because it was time for those things to happen. AND YOU KNOW WHAT. I'm gonna go on record and say that the songs were better in Tangled, yeah, that's right! Let's compare the opening songs. Do you want to build a snowman. vs When will my life begin. They have their similarities. They're both about young women who are locked away and lonely. Except...what do we learn about Elsa and Anna from it? That Elsa is introverted and Anna is extroverted? And that Anna thinks building snowmen are a fun activity for when your parents die? That's all I got. What do we know about them? Does this opening song actually EFFECT the story? What does Elsa actually....DO? Meanwhile, When will my life begin characterizes Rapunzel. She doesn't just sit there all there and mope. She's an active and anxious girl. On top of that, it foreshadows the story's conclusion. (The focus on her painting actually comes back for the story!) It's even strengthens the mood when a reprise comes in for when she first leaves her tower. How about the villain song then? We have Mother know best, an unsettling song about an abusive guardian's guilt trip. It's passive aggressive, it's two faced. It's so accurate, that a few of my friends with abusive parents can't listen to it. Now that's real powerful! And....uh....Love is an open Door? It doesn't characterize him, since it's supposed to be based on lies.It doesn't explain motivation, and since this is a red herring plot, it overall contributes to nothing. Hm. Okay, how about the comedy songs then. In Tangled we have I have a Dream. A funny and catchy song that also happens to reveals the motivations of background characters, casually teaches children 'not to judge people by their appearances' AND has a third act payoff. For Frozen we have Olaf's song. Which tells us....he's curious about summer. And that's it. How about the romantic songs then. For Tangled we have "I see the Light". A beautiful and iconic moment for sure, the visuals stick out at you, and the turn both characters take are solidified. I mean, for crying out loud, the first few lines are an abridged version of their respective arcs. Even separating it from the movie, it's a great stand alone romantic ballad. And for Frozen we have A little of a Fixer-Uper, a very forgettable song. It happened when Anna was dying, yet they tried to force comedy. And it was ALL about Christophe. Not to mention that it ended with them almost getting married, a direct contradiction of their 'themes', don'cha think? Not that it matters ,the Troll's couldn't help Anna and the song never really worked with the plot. You can take it out and literally nothing would change. In fact, you can say the same thing with Elsa and her "Let it Go' song It was supposed to be about her letting go of her fears and becoming more confident, yeah? So what did she do for the rest of the movie? Mope, push people away, run, and cry. The song may as well not have been there at all! Notice how Tangled's song ends up directly relating and effecting the main story. It's interwoven. However Frozen's songs are just....there. Much like the character...."arcs" it doesn't feel like it's happening organically. It feels like it's happening because it has to. TL;DR: Tangled is objectively better than Frozen, fight me. Frozen's story was changed drastically halfway through production and BOY does it show.

WonderousSmiles And this is why Tangled is definitely rewatchable. I know I'm a month late, but the songs that connects with the plot and characters (and a bit of comedy) feels as if we are into their story. We saw everyone who served a role in that film, which I think is pretty phenomenal in my opinion. Besides, that's one example on how an execution of a love story film works. (Drat, that sentence doesn't fit at all.)

+Shwah Gamers I would be willing to debate the soundtrack point. I won't deny that Tangled has no Let it Go... but that's Frozen's big trump card. For almost every other, Tangled has one that is at least just as good, and they have what you need in any movie's soundtrack. Each tell the story. None are filler, as all come back later, either to show us who Rapunzel is, show her gaining allies, be used to show a town and festival and sweep us into it, or to have two people say they love each other. Tangled has mystic trolls who do a song that makes them out to be quite possibly some of the worst comic relief I have ever seen, and I always wonder why no one brings that up. Oh, and IN SUUUUUUUMMMER!

This stars cheerful queen of selfies Kitty as Anna, serious studious intense law student Emma as Elsa, conniving scheming seductive Alejandro as Hans, sarcastic snarky braniac Noah as Kristoff (and crazy Izzy as Sven) optimistic dim lovable Owen as Olaf...you get the picture. Also throw in a few characters like Jacques and Josee from Weaselton, a merchant called Sugar, and possible use of characters like spiritualists and those people who'll tease their family all the time about getting a date.

Heres the real answer Disney originally planned Elsa to be the villain and Let it go has going to be a villain Song, but because the writers loved the song they changed Elsa into a tragic hero and the story was rewritten allover again, but that caused new problems. The reason why Elsa's ice powers are not explained is because the writers thought it be too overcomplicated for the kids to understand. If that's the case then how is changing Elsa from a villain to a hero a good idea again, because so far the story is a mess????

Worthless. You are claiming my opinion is worthless. There is no such thing as 'matterless'. Is my opinion worthless, though? I was simply expressing admiration for the animators, programmers and designers of Tangled, who did an incredible job. And yes, I was taking a jab Frozen animators, who I think don't do a good as job as they might have. If you simply look at the detail of the faces, buildings, they are often plain and singled colored. But the globe scene in Tangled, the boat on the dark waters, it all looks fantastic. Perhaps you can compare these in your memory and see if I am right or wrong. But now that you mention it, Frozen was not a great movie to me - except the end, which was surprising and interesting. Instead of the 'prince' saving her, it was a friend (or sister? I can't remember). That was revolutionary for Disney, and would soon influence other films.

I adore Frozen, but I loathe and detest all the hype around it. Not from the hipster "I liked it before it was cool" stance, but because Elsa's and Anna's faces are plastered everywhere, they're sold as toys and cakes and balloons and dress ups etc, but no one seems to get hyped about Frozen for the creativity (when you consider the source material, it's a pretty damn creative adaptation), or how good the LYRICS are in Let It Go (honestly, I get so empowered when I sing that, and it's actually my go-to pick up when I'm struggling with self-confidence or anxiety issues) as opposed "omgggg the title song, let's sing it!". And as for Olaf, I still don't know why he exists apart from to pander to the -5s going to see it. Seriously, he adds literally NOTHING the film bar a few cheap gags and could be so easily written out of it, it's almost unbelievable. And yes, I'm aware the same could be said for Max or Pascal in Tangled, but at least they had sass and attitude. Olaf is just so overly cutesy and good that it's like watching a snow version of Charlie Bucket from Tim Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Tangled too, and like NC I actually think it's better than Frozen in some places. But Tangled is still kind of a generic Disney film, y'know? Frozen on the other hand has some REALLY powerful messages told through it in an oddly relate-able way; self-consciousness, social anxiety, rejection and (from a certain angle) depression are all dealt with, and overcome in a healthy way. Quite apart from anything else, Elsa proves that you can overcome anything if you just learn how to understand it before trying to control it, which I think is such an important message for kids, especially nowadays when everyone seems to be diagnosed with something.

I can't speak for Song of the Sea, having never seen it, but how the Hell does Beauty and the Beast promote dealing with Depression? Yes he gave up when Belle left him, but that's not the same thing.

Olivia McDonagh Dealing with depression is not make fun with it. Be depressed is not like your Pride Rights to be gay or asexual (that's new). Knowing myself about it, I prefer more Batb than Frozen, Batb is bittersweet, Frozen is bitter, and more rotten to the core analysing the context with adult eyes. You're lucky to live in a country where singing Frozen is not a proof to be mentaly disabled, it's really a song adressed to 4-6 years old kids in my country, only adults singing it to made a Chaning Tatum performance, or revendicative gays.
@LilyGrace95
@LilyGrace95 8 лет назад
Well, having had Depression myself, I find Frozen a much better way of portraying it. I didn't even associate BatB with depression, and I've been watching that for over 20 years. I'm not entirely sure where you think depression is made fun of, or portrayed in a light-hearted way in Frozen, but either way you evidently need to rewatch it. And Let It Go is most definitely a song associated with 4-6yr olds. In fact, I don't even sing it unless I'm home alone cos otherwise it's met with a roll of the eyes or a "do you HAVE to sing that?" And good for the LGBT+. Given Let It Go is about owning the thing that makes you feel "other" instead of feeling ashamed and trying to cover it up, I'm glad the gays in your country and the mentally ill and singing it.

The mystery of the movie is kind of unoriginal and predictable, but overall, it's one of the smartest movies starring anthropomorphic animals that has been on the big screen, mainly it is the most practically realized. It's attention and care to both big and small details according to the concept of a world where animals of all kinds of shapes and sizes co-exist is unbelievable. Its design choices are in fact so clever and subtle that a cinephile can see about as much eye-candy in each frame as they would watching a Stanley Kubrick movie. What makes it more than a style over substance film though is the charm and likability of the characters. Both the main leads possess admirable and relatable traits and backstories, and because they represent two opposing sides of a spectrum, it gives audiences the opportunity to make individual connections with them, as depending on their own experiences can make them relate with Judy and enjoy Nick or vice versa.

Tangled is my all time favorite movie, it's just so beautifully done, and the characters are pretty relatable, and have good development throughout the movie, and series, and speaking of the series, it's amazing as well, and introduces so much more to the story, and characters, and adds new ones with interesting stories. And I don't get why people are saying Tangled's music is somewhat forgettable, do y'all ever think that Frozen's music may seem more rememberable because it was EVERYWHERE? Not just because it was good? I get annoyed with half the songs in it, yet Tangled's is so beautiful and flows well with the story, and just in general. And Mother Gothel is not a weak villain, she's actually super realistic.

Tangled is the better film, the characters are more relatable and fleshed out, the love story makes sense and actually has a build up and to be honest it was just a more well thought out movie. Frozen, to be fair did have me disappointed from the beginning, I have loved the original tale of the snow queen for years, with its dark story and terrifying villainess and when I heard and saw the original concept art (look it up its amazing) I was pumped, but then I saw the film and was so utterly aghast that they had turned it from one of my favourite cautionary tales to disney backwash. It didn't improve or create a cool story, it took the aesthetic and elements and turned it into something unoriginal, which is disappointing considering the material they were basing it off of. It was trite, the moral was flimsy the characters weren't pushed into something better but into something expected, and the songs did little to nothing to really move the story as much as they were to just have a song to put on the soundtrack (there are as many songs in the first act of frozen as there are in the ENTIRETY of Tangled). Elements of the movie were dull, not thought out or cut (the trolls, the history of arindell, the history of the magic and backstories were all left out). Tangled was a completely realized idea, that had a strong moral for both kids and adults, the story was refined and left little lose ends, and most importantly it took the original content and built on it, it didn't strip or tear it down, but instead expanded it, made more amazing, more magical and more meaningful which is what it should do. Its true that Tangled isn't the best Disney film but it just has more of a lasting and memorable story than Frozen did.

The odd thing with the argument of Disney characters marrying when they just met, hardly any actually do. At the end of Tangled it's said that Flynn asked for years before she said yes. Beauty and the Beast it was an undefined amount of months. They weren't even "official" at the end of Mulan. Disney movies are quick to romance (again excluding mulan and beauty and the beast since those were both upwards to a year before romance), but not quick to marriage. of course there are ones that are, but it's few and far between.

Mmmhhmmm. I'd much rather rewatch any episode from the series than Frozen. Much more developed characters and such. Like the whole plot twist and everything with Varian and then Cassandra, it's so much more well done than with Hans, personally I thought something was weird with Hans from the beginning, but with Varian especially it's an actually surprising twist, with plenty of good reason. And with Cass it's a 'not so surprising, but still somewhat shocking to have your theory confirmed' kinda deal.

Also, please go and rewatch Tangled and look for all of the We're So Smart moments in it. They are more subtle than Frozen, but there's WAY more of them. Compare the love interests though. Tangled has a WAY better love interest. He has more depth and he's far more entertaining. True, Frozen puts that aspect in the background and Tangled focuses on it... but I personally love a good love story and Frozen just didn't do it for me. If I could pick any Disney character to marry I would choose Flynn in a heartbeat. Best. Disney. Guy. EVER! And I've ALWAYS preferred the music from Tangled, I'm not just saying that because Let it Go and all that other crap is stupidly popular, I wasn't sick of Frozen when I first saw it and even then I liked Tangled and its music better.

I have to agree. I also never figured out why Kristoff got adopted by trolls. He had a family, or at least a community. We see it at the start of the flick, and he just wanders off for a couple minutes and gets adopted. Wasn't he at speaking age by that point? Did he never tell the trolls that he already had a family? Did Disney forget to kill off the parents for once? Not that the trolls are a good trade-off. People will dislike me for saying this, but I found myself getting really frustrated with the characters in Frozen. I kept looking for things to relate to or someone to root for, and they'd turn around and do something extreme or annoying instead. There's no rational middle ground for any of the characters. Maybe that's why I only liked the caribou. He just silently cheered people on. Tangled had a beautiful orchestral score, and I really enjoyed the imagery. The scene with the lanterns was absolutely stunning, and the song by Zach Levi and Mandy Moore is still one of my favourite Disney love songs. Even if it isn't the best Disney movie, Tangled is still one that I'm happy to put on after having a bad day. It's really comforting for some reason.

The thing that makes Gothel one of the best Disney villains ever is she’s a realistic one. Unfortunately parents like that do exist, its the exact same with Frollo or (despite he isn’t even close to the best Disney villain) Governor Ratcliffe because sadly people like that exist in real life. Frollo is probably my #1 because he truly believed he was doing the will of God and not understanding he’s broken nearly every commandment. And he’s in a position of power and literally nearly genocided a city just to get laid. And with Ratcliffe, despite he isn’t that threatening aside the end when he attempts to kill the chief after he backed down from the battle, John Smith sacrificed himself to protect him. He was lying and manipulating his men that the natives were nothing but blood thirsty savages and aren’t capable of love or are even humans, from Colors of the Wind one of the most powerful lines ever in a Disney movie “You think the only people who are people, are the people who think and look like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you’ll find things you never knew, you never knew” and this is pretty much the line that made John Smith realize how wrong and toxic his worldview was, that HE was the savage, not her. “You think I’m an ignorant savage, you’ve been so many places, I guess it must be so. But still I cannot see, if the savage one is me. How can there be so much that you don’t know? You don’t know?” And this is exactly how Ratcliffe is when Smith started arguing with him about war and standing up for her people, and though his comrades started to doubt and question their boss (mainly because they liked Smith more, it’s confirmed in the movie) the moment Thomas informed them of his capture they immediately snap back. But its when her father spared his life, Ratcliffe demanded they start attacking, his men refused because even if they didn’t understand what her father said, the important thing is he let their comrade go free and ordered his warriors to back off. And this is the moment Ratcliffe feels defeated and trapped, even if he had succeeded in killing the chief instead of John Smith, the point is he was still a giant manipulative racist who refused to believe the natives were people and had feelings, just like them. Anyways didn’t mean to go on that rabbit trail. But my favorite aspect of Gothel is “did she truly love Rapunzel as a daughter, even if it was just a little?” And its further confirmed in the series no.

His nitpick that Tangled's voice acting distracts him from thinking about the characters is stupid and the actors aren't that famous anyway. They play their roles convincingly. He rarely complains about celebrity casts in other animated films. His gripe with the songs being another thing that stops it from being a great movie makes no sense to me. They all set the moods well for their scenes. Yet he says Frozen is one of his top 10 favorite Disney films despite major contradictions. Even Schaffrillas, as much as he likes Tangled more than Frozen, doesn't like Tangled enough to be in his top 10 because of nitpicks. He ranked it at 13 in his all Disney Studios film ranking. Some problems with Frozen are that there was no benefit to changing Anna’s memory because that just causes unneeded drama with the sisters reunion because Anna doesn't know why Elsa is introverted. There was no foreshadowing for Hans being a villain despite fans wanting to interpret certain lines from Love is An Open Door as such. He has an affectionate look on his face when under the boat looking at Anna when no one saw him. He had no reason to act differently there if he didn’t love her. Then he tries to calm Elsa after seeing her try to push a guard to his death off the balcony, which makes no sense for her because she’s been trying to avoid hurting people the entire time before that. Then soon after she stops, Hans moves a trapped guards hand to aim at the chandelier. That couldn’t be an accident because Hans glances in its direction before aiming there. He wants Elsa dead so he can take her place, so it makes no sense for him to play nice and ruin a good chance to let her die by the guard shooting her, only to try to kill her a different way using the same thing. - continued
@ericbreaux6124
@ericbreaux6124 Год назад
When Anna and her friends try to get Elsa to come home, she creates a snow monster to throw them out, knowing the risk of it’s aggression because later she sees him fighting the guards outside. If she could hear that, she could hear it screaming at her friends when it was in front of the closed door. That’s not a risk someone trying to avoid hurting people would take just to kick out someone you love. She hated isolation but then is happy when she isolated herself enough to sing like she’s triumphed over her problem, and has no plan to survive in the wild. She’s avoiding hurting people but there’s no reason she should be happy that she still thinks she’s a threat that should have minimal human contact. One message from the movie is that marrying someone you just met is foolish, but then the rock trolls immediately try to get Anna and Kristof married when they see them. What’s odd to me is that professional reviewers liked Frozen more than Tangled. Rotten Tomatoes’s general consensus was: "While far from Disney's greatest film, Tangled is a visually stunning, thoroughly entertaining addition to the studio's classic animated canon." Why did they feel like saying it’s far from Disney's greatest film? The same sites consensus for Frozen was: "Beautifully animated, smartly written, and stocked with singalong songs, Frozen adds another worthy entry to the Disney canon." Why no criticism for the much more flawed film? Scott Mendelson on Forbes said: "Frozen is both a declaration of Disney's renewed cultural relevance and a reaffirmation of Disney coming to terms with its own legacy and its own identity. It's also a just plain terrific bit of family entertainment." How could so many people be so ignorant of how major the flaws in Frozen are and how well everything works in Tangled? Tangled restored Disney’s popularity, not Frozen.

It's hard to say which actual movie I like more, but Rapunzel is my favorite Disney princess, firmly cemented as of Tangled: The Series. She's not just perky and optimistic, but creative, intuitive, awkward but always well-meaning and eager to learn, and confidently marches to her own drum in a way that's a bit different than other princesses' takes. She's fierce, determined, excitable but patient, and loyal; and she copes with trauma very well for the most part while also still being very clearly affected by it, making her both inspiring and relatable. Rapunzel is Best Princess (aside from _maybe_ Princess Sofia but I have a whole different bias there for my gloriously manipulative child, and she has her own separate line rather than being a traditional princess).

Honestly, Frozen was such a borefest that I barely remember that I even watched: I had to check the dvd cover to actually remember that I watched it. On top of that the movie has far too many pointless (and forgettable songs) that really feel like padding (I grew up with disney, so songs in movies isn't an issue). Plus I really disliked the characters. Tangled however was very pleasent, the characters were funnier and more enjoyable, the songs didn't suck as bad as frozen, and I overall found it just more memorable. Infact I should watch it someday again... Infact I just don't understand why Frozen is so famous: I just think it's a pretty boring and forgettable movie in my opinion. I would've definitely enjoyed it more if it was 2d though...

janusan89 How the heck do you forget that you've ever watched Frozen? How could you forget their songs including the Oscar winning song Let It Go? Honestly I love both Tangled and Frozen. I can't choose a side. But if I had to then I'd choose (sorry Tangled) Frozen. Very interesting story unforgettable songs amazing characters and voice performances and a villain twist ALL in one movie. That's pretty impressive. Now Tangled has all of these amazing qualities too, but everyone knows the story of Rapunzel, so I thought the film was pretty redundant. Frozen on the other hand not very many people knew the story of The Snow Queen. So I thought that it was pretty cool to see an adaptation of a story that I've never even heard of. And both movies have one of my favorite actresses in it playing a main character. Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Idina Menzel as Elsa. So for me it's kind of hard to choose because they're both my favorite actresses. But either way I think Frozen did a much better job than Tangled. It was original, the songs were better and for once in a disney princess movie, had a surprise villain twist. I think Frozen smacked the ball out of the park much better than Tangled did.

Samuel Mowery I thought his motivation was very weak. It was strange for the royals to choose him as Arendelle’s king after they thought Anna died & Hans would kill Elsa. Frozen wasn't a movie; it was a two-hour long music video for Idina Menzel. The only reason it was as wildly-runaway-popular as it was was due to the fact that Disney had launched a covert ad-campaign for it a year in advance. And the shame of it is that it *could* have been groundbreaking, if the writers had stuck to the original premise of Elsa being the villain. 'Let it Go' had a terrible message for girls--it's okay to throw a temper-tantrum and sulk if you don't get your way!-- and her actions, all the way up to the end when She saves Anna, are so anti-heroic they border on the dastardly. Also Olaf is the literal Devil.

I agree with most of what the video says, but... how in the world is Hans a better villain than Mother Gothel? Mother Gothel is so fun to watch and yet so intimidating, while Hans only has the surprise factor on his side, being quite a forgettable villain and being defeated in such a pathetic way... Tangled is way better than Frozen in everything (plot, characters, comic relief...) but the songs. I like Tangled's songs, but I have to admit Frozen's are awesome.
@JohnCena-ei2pj
@JohnCena-ei2pj 8 лет назад
Hans is significantly more realistic than Gothel, who is an idiot to not simply change Rapunzel's birthday. Hans is an actual sociopath with an air-tight plan, which was foiled because he didn't know a talking snowman existed and saved Anna. as for those other aspects, Frozen has no plot holes while Tangled has tons, Frozen has 4 character arcs while Tangled has 2 and the comic relief in Frozen had an actual purpose instead of being there to sell merchandise. Frozen is objectively superior to Tangled in every department. You're fooling yourself if you think otherwise.
@MiruJaca
@MiruJaca 8 лет назад
John Cena Being a good villain (or character in general) is not just about being realistic, specially in this kind of movie. And if we're going to judge characters for being unrealistic, we should talk about Anna and her decisions towards Hans. Gothel's plan was brilliant and only failed because she made a minor mistake and because Flynn found Rapunzel by chance. Hans' plan wasn't bad, but it all depended in Anna being incredibly stupid and Elsa going away because she lost control over her powers (Hans didn't even know she had powers, so he got really lucky here). Plot holes? Olaf's mere existence is. Elsa creates an intelligent being unknowingly and it isn't explained. Using a carrot to open a locked door in order to move the plot forward is clumsy writing. And Anna getting frozen just in the right moment to protect Elsa is a deus ex machina (I have to admit Rapunzel's healing tears is a bigger one, though). I could probably go on about Frozen's mistakes, but this comment is long enough already. Tangled is funnier and the story and characters are better. Frozen has two interesting plot twists and amazing songs (Tangled's are good but not as much), that's all.
@JohnCena-ei2pj
@JohnCena-ei2pj 8 лет назад
Miru Jaca Except Anna wasn't stupid, she was naive, like Rapunzel. Huge difference. Hans did his homework before choosing Arendelle because he knew Anna was living a sheltered life and would probably not be able to spot a sociopath. And who can blame her when Hans proved to be incredibly good at his job? Gothel's plan hinged on her running with a wailing baby in her arms and somehow escaping all of the guards at the castle when the only way into and out of the city is a single bridge, which means there's an easy choke point.That's a huge leap in logic, and a plot hole. Olaf was created when Elsa imparted some of her memories to create him. It's the power of magic. Nothing more needs to be said over this. The carrot had a sharp tip that could fit in the keyhole. Anna saving Hans wasn't a deus ex machina simply because it's entirely possible that she ran fast enough to get in front of Hans, who was taking small steps towards Elsa. Rapunzel randomly recollecting memories of her parents when she was a year old is a deus ex machina. That along with the tear are major flaws in the plot of Tangled. So, I could write an essay about the flaws in Tangled and how Frozen has significantly less flaws than it, but this post is long enough as it is. I don't see how any of the characters or the heavily flawed story of Tangled is better than Frozen, but to each their own.
@MiruJaca
@MiruJaca 8 лет назад
John Cena No, believing anything the person you think is your mother says is being naive. Wanting to marry a man you just met and leaving your kingdom in his hands is being stupid. Of course, Anna is a teen, I can understand that. Ariel from The Little Mermaid also acted stupidly because of "love", but she made a mistake because Ursula manipulated her taking advantage of the situation King Triton had created. Hans didn't need any manipulating, he just treated Anna nicely and she hands him her fucking kingdom. Even the power of magic needs to be explained. That's why Rapunzel's tears healing Flynn is a deus ex machina. And that's why Olaf coming to life is a plothole. And if you can buy that a carrot can open a locked door, of course you can buy Gothel escaping with Rapunzel or Rapunzel remembering her parents. (Edit: I must say, the carrot opening the door is good as a joke, the problem is that the act itself is not just a gag, is a major plot point, and as so it feels really stupid.) And yes, Anna saving Elsa is a deus ex machina because she gets frozen AT THE VERY RIGHT MOMENT. One second later and Anna is dead. By the way, why didn't Elsa protect herself from Hans with her powers? Of course, she didn't know he was evil, but she could have protected herself without hurting him, the same way she did before with the guards.
@JohnCena-ei2pj
@JohnCena-ei2pj 8 лет назад
Anna didn't just hand her kingdom over to Hans, it was temporary while she went after Elsa. After years of not having anyone to talk to, Anna was desperate and Hans played with that. The entire song and dance number was them bonding over the things they like and upon finding out that they share a lot of similarities, Anna thought she had met the perfect man. That's not stupid, that's the definition of naive. And if you're really pushing the stupid agenda, Rapunzel could also be said to be stupid because despite all the books she's read, she believed Gothel's tales on the outside world. At that age, curiosity should have made her leave. I told you how Elsa created Olaf. By imparting a portion of her consciousness. This isn't unlike Iceman in the X-Men. That's already a possible explanation and therefore not a plot hole. Difference is the carrot was specifically designed to fit in the keyhole in the film. That's already an explanation. Gothel outrunning the guards and Rapunzel remembering her 1 year old self has no explanation. Those are plot holes. That's a convenience, not a deus ex machina. Plenty of movies have things happening at the right moment. Coincidences do happen in real life too. As for why Elsa didn't protect herself, it's because she was devastated at the loss of Anna and the fact that she couldn't stop the winter that she decided sacrifice was worth it. She thought there was nothing left to live for anymore.

Even though Ralph didn't have quite as many video game character cameos as people expected/would've liked, it made up for it by having a nice story with likable characters and forming connections between them. Ralph wasn't perfect but I really enjoyed it. I liked BH6 too, it just felt like everything in it had been done before. Tadashi and Baymax were the only characters I really liked and they both died. I'll tell you this all the people I met say that you can watch Tangled and Hero from beginning to end without skipping scenes. Once Ralph enters Sugar Rush its pretty slow down until the time of the Race. Also I wouldn't trust critics reviews cause he can love one film and talk about its meaning and then the next if he finds it OK he wouldn't go full depth or won't try to understand why people love it. Big Hero 6 is that case cause its more Lilo and Stitch than Incredibles. It was far from a super hero story. It was about handling a death and how far will someone go to accept the circumstances. Hell, from the moment you meet Hiro the camera is on him the entire time. Its through his perspective not his friends (which is why his friends all appear at once on screen, or individually with Hiro and like in real life you don't know what happens in their lives minute by minute).

But she was hugely over exaggerating. Her cautions weren't from a place of caution for Rapunzels safety, they were to prevent her from ever going outside.

i feel tangled is a stronger film, mostly because it felt more solid to me. when i look back on tangled, i can see a full story thats complete. when i look back on frozen, i just remember parts and not that much happening (im not saying nothing happened) while i do like both films, i would choose tangled over frozen to watch

I completely agree. I've only seen Frozen once (and maybe partially a second time while my sister watched it, but I was only really there for Let It Go). I've seen Tangled two or three times. It's actually one of the three Disney Princess movies I consonantly watch over and over (the other two being Moana and The Princess and the Frog). Frozen was okay, but Tangled was better, in my opinion.

"How many times have you seen a horse act like Tomy Lee Jones from the fugitives?" Well at least once before: the horse in tangled looks a lot like the horse in the road to el dorado. Not that this is a bad thing, they're both nice and fun secondary characters, but I had to point out that El dorado did it first.

Animation wise Tangeled wins by a long shot, I hate how awfully Frozen is animated. It's Disney, they basically wrote the commandments of animation, yet...... Elsa's hair goes right through her shoulder in her main scene!!!!.It just the worst, the ballroom scene has copy paste models with 3 different colors. The backgrounds are lackluster, secondary animation is minimal, and the hair rendering is downright LAZY. The scene in which Ana gets out of bed with "bed head" is not funny its unfinished!! Compare that to Tangled where Disney literally created new rendering simulators just for the textures and hair. (Seriously if you're interested look at how they synthesized organic and semi regular textures, breathtaking!) There's just so much effort and detail! When Finn holds Rapunzel after being revived look up close, her cloth literally is animated to react to its touch, he holds her, it softens and folds. Compare that to Anna and Kristoff, Kristoff holds her, his fucking thumb goes right into her stomach. Now this is not to say Tangled has no mistakes, but if you're going to compare....

the tidbit about the hair animation is funny because elsa and anna had WAY MUCH MORE individual hairs being rendered than rapunzel, yet in the end rapunzel's hair animation was so much more better.

I like Tangled more, it’s funnier, and has a near perfect narrative. Very clever writing, and the characters are so darn likable! Frozen has this too, but there are a couple characters that are less developed than they should be in Frozen. Anna and Kristoff are great characters, but the others not so much.

When I saw Frozen in theaters, I really liked it. It was entertaining, looked great, and tried to avoid some big tropes/clichés. In the following months (well I guess years at this point), I've come to lose my enjoyment of it thanks to all the hype and seemingly mindless devotion to it. Yeah it was fun, but taking a step back do people really think it's a masterpiece? It has plot holes, while the music is good the first time around I only like 2 of the songs now, and the whole avoiding clichés thing didn't really flow (honestly feels like they were trying too hard). After seeing it multiple times I still love Tangled: it flows, I like the characters, interesting story, looks great, etc. Yeah it didn't have any Broadway-worthy singles, and yeah the princess ends up quickly falling in love with and marrying a guy, but I don't think that makes it a lesser film. Everything it did worked - even the villain, whose intimidation factor comes from playing a loving mother to her victim but still being a cruel person doing dark things behind the victim's back - so for me, Tangled wins every time.

Technically Rapunzel doesn't immediately marry Eugene. It took them a while to get to that stage.

Um Rapunzel and Flynn don’t get married at least for 3 years. The series even included his joke about “After years of asking and asking and asking, I finally said yes” where Flynn proposed and got rejected at least twice, obviously not because Rapunzel didn’t love him anymore, but she was finally free and wasn’t ready for a commitment and Flynn respects that and never pushes the issue at all, simply telling her whenever she was ready he is. Anna if anything fell in love with Kristoff just as fast as Hans and that’s what bugs me about their kiss in the end, especially because he lectured her about marrying someone she just met, but all of a sudden kisses her like he wants to marry her. And no making the sequel 3 years later doesn’t count as its cheating around the issue of how fast Anna fell for Kristoff

Let's all take a moment as a society to think about what a great villain Gothel is. She is the type of villain that convinces her prey she is doing their good and let them care for her. All the scenes she is with Rapuntzel, she always touches her hairs, not the Rapuntzel herself, a subtle underline of how less she cares really about her, but only about her power. Gothel committed so much to manipulate Rapuntzel that she feels guilty for wanting freedom. If this is not terrible/terrifying I don't know what that is.
