are they really closing soon?
where will they shift to?
so what's the current situation?
is it still worth visiting?

Our food heritage is slowly eroding away. Our leaders prefers spanking new buildings, air conditioned with ambiance. But the rentals will not invite real hawkers. Instead you'll get owners, hiring cheap labour's who have no clue how to cook local dishes.

Actually hawker centres are run by NEA, HDB, JTC. They are run on the premise of keeping public food hygienic and affordable to the masses. In 2019, Singapore submitted its nomination to inscribe its hawker culture on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. So, I think we should actually appreciate the efforts of our government to raise the standards of hygiene and comfort while keeping prices affordable to the general masses. I don't find many privately run coffeeshops or foodcourt that is able to deliver such objectives. At the very least, most of the hawker centres have better toilets than poorly run coffeeshops (although it is getting better in the last 5 yrs).

Great that you finally made a Laksa and Malay food review here. Actually the gem for Malay food is the Nasi Lemak, Lontong and the Nasi Padang at Blk 47 next to Tanglin Halt Market. Give it a try. Go after 9am when most of the food is cooked. I haven't tried the Laksa but I like the lighter version like those in Sungei Road rather than the sweet and thick Katong version.
@Piggypuggy
@Piggypuggy 2 года назад
Oh wow.. I haven’t even stepped foot on block 47. Right behind the Kopi I bought from? If you like lighter version of Laksa.. maybe can give it a go. I somehow tasted a bit of tangy or sourness to the Laksa soup.. Sungei road Laksa seems to be in between Katong and this.. just right for Goldilocks

I fully agree that the Laksa is really on a lighter taste. To me, it is just ordinary, since it started selling at $2 or $2.50 ard 18yrs ago, I tried and never patronize again. The duck noodle same too, over hype, wonder what so special? Both are relatives, they are lucky to be famous. The gem is the fried bee hoon stall next to soya bean drink stall, the secret behind i guess is 广祥泰soy sauce is used, its fried chicken wings a must-order side dish, but this stall usually sold out by 11am.
@Piggypuggy
@Piggypuggy 2 года назад
Thanks for the tip JS. I shall try the fried bee Hoon next time. Isn’t it funny how some really quality stalls doesn’t have much publicity while many are just over hyped? One of the reasons why I rarely join the long queues. Many a times.. it’s monkey see monkey do.. and the results are not wwaaaaahhhh
@AmbientWalking
@AmbientWalking 2 года назад
The stall that you see at 5:21... second one from the left, the one that is shuttered... is actually, for me, the best peanut porridge in Singapore. It's still selling at $1.40 (or something very cheap). There is always even bits of dried scallop in the peanut porridge. I always go and eat quite late, around 8 or 9 pm. Yes, it only opens later in the day. Very shiok.

As long as your filming doesn’t affect their business, there should be no reason to reject your goodwill. It’s probably inhospitable because of his busy work ethic. Free publicity should be acceptable for a hawker, regardless of any weird reason. Tanglin Halt hawker centre is a nostalgic place for me as it used to be near my old secondary school where we will go there for lunch, it’s a laid back place. I found nowadays Hawker centres very cramped for space unlike this location. It’s spacious hexagonal construct.

Hope this hawker center becomes a historic landmark and never gets torn down, especially the beautiful aged trees. Leave the dedicated, hard working hawkers be w/o having to relocate. geez. All the food you tried and didn't try looks delicious, especially the chicken rice. I prefer Penang style assam laksa which does not have coconut milk, as I am not a fan of coconut. Amazing right? 20 cents. Hawkers back then never really thought about making big money.. they put in maximum effort for minimal reward. So sad to hear that this nice hawker center, serving such good hawker food, have to face closure soon. It is tough enough being a hawker and now they have to be uprooted and re-establish their brand again elsewhere. Really tough life!😒 The laksa and chicken rice look delicious. My favorite stall is Queenstown Lontong. I love Malay food, mee rebus, nasi lemak, mee siam, lontong... are all my favorites!😜 Too bad, so many other good stalls are closed and cannot be featured. All the best to the hawkers at this center...✨💖

Hello Liz! High five 🙌🏼 on the Malay food.. I think most of them are lovingly prepared by owners themselves and the sauce usually takes a long time to cook. Shall Jalan down to have a leisurely lontong another day.. can’t enjoy while filming. Too busy meddling w camera. This place was supposed to be gone early this year.. but the hawkers told me the completion of the new place at Queenstown cinema was really delayed due to covid. But it’s kinda sad 😢 that government really wants to tear down this place.. it’s considered a historical monument.. just like how I don’t understand the tearing down of National Library back then.. it can easily be preserved or have new buildings built around to have historical landmarks cohabit with the modern high rise
