Somehow everyone has forgotten that originally, a long time ago, this dance began as the art of hand-to-hand combat, and then two men danced in training. Look at all elements of two men's dance - it is chipping, blocks, mirroring - the beauty of the future fight. And much later tango became a dance of man and woman - it became not about fighting, but about passion.
The tango was originally a practice that consisted of meeting and dancing, it was started by the slaves but later the workers of the ports of Buenos Aires continued it, who added the European instrumentation and thus the musical tango was born. The practice was only between men since there were no female workers. As there were no women, as always happens, men began to have sex with each other, then the characteristic dance that we know today was formalized, it was a way of fraternizing and also of finding a sexual partner and a way to just pass the time with each other. The church was scandalized, they tried to ban tango but it soon began to be practiced clandestinely. In the midst of this persecution by the church, many brothels were installed in the ports so that men would not resort to having sexual relations with each other (a fairly normal strategy used by Europeans) but far from ending the practices, tango began to dance with the prostitutes and it became much more popular, now not only the workers practiced the tango, but also citizens of the surroundings who resorted to these brothels for the show and for the sex. The scandal reached the Vatican and also aroused interest in European society, gaining more popularity. This popularity that tango gained ended up molding it as we know it today, it went from brothels and ports to dance halls throughout Buenos Aires and the essence of its beginnings was maintained, such as the clothing of women (who were prostitutes and for this reason they dressed so provocative for the standards of that time) and the passionate and sensual dance but the dance technique and the musical composition of tango improved a lot since then.

@@AraneaTempestatibus That’s true, there’s no absolute role. I just mean that in dancing there are obvious traditional roles and styles that men and women generally have.
Late to the party but the original Tango actually involved two men, the choreography moves are all configured to look like a fight or duel between two guys as you can see.
During the building boom in Argentina, when many extra workers were imported, there were so many men for the few women available, that they would practice dancing with each other to impress the women

In its beginnings, tango was danced between men, it was a way of conquering women. It was not considered effeminate or gay, it was a "manly" dance since it originated in the poor areas of Argentina. It is not empowering, it is tango in its purest form

See, there are a few of us who really appreciate this particular expression in a world where so much is expected to be accepted no matter what. Простите, но где Вы узрели чувственность? И при чём здесь "сегодня"?)) Танго изначально парный мужской танец. Это Танец-борьба, при чём именно за внимание женщины. И здесь же это видно, помилуйте. Явное соперничество, демонстрация мастерства, столкновение. Где здесь чувственность между партнёрами?)) История танца очень интересна. Имеет смысл ознакомиться, чтобы действительно понимать происходящее.
