Hey everyone, I'm back with another video! Wanted to share an update on the tank after everything had time to become established. Everything is continuing along nicely and the little larvae has already become an eft! I'm excited to raise this little newt and see how the tank continues to grow.

Hi! Your videos have been extremely helpful to me. I was able to raise and release 11 spotted salamander larva all in good health. I found that mosquito larva worked really well for them! Prior to me collecting them, I set out a tub of water to hopefully get some mosquito larva. It worked really well, I had hundreds of extra mosquitos. (I had to dump them out to prevent any adults emerging and spreading disease). I decided to keep 1 however, as it recognized my pipet as a food source. He/she is now terrestrial, and doing really well on springtails, dwarf whites, and mosquito larva I put on land. Thanks so much for these informational videos! :D

Found your channel, love it. Right up my alley. I live in eastern Kentucky we have several salamander species here. I am definiely a fan of amphibians also. I have a few videos on my channel of a vivarium I made several years back nad raised dart frogs. Your channel has me itching to get back in the hobby. Great work man, subbed. Looking forward to more videos!

The kind words are much appreciated. I'll have to check out your vivarium video, dart frogs are among my favorites too. The more people in the hobby, the better too.

Beautiful update! I'm so impressed that your adults didn't snack on the larva. My larvae and efts are mostly doing ok- 4 efts and I believe 3 larvae left. Unfortunately I have had the same issue this year with eft mortality, so I have switched from a soil based (cocofibre) substrate to a paper towel substrate to better keep things clean. For food- do you have a garden? I have several plants in my garden that are infested with green or black aphids and as I don't spray or treat with any insecticide (or fertilizer), I have harvested leaves coated in aphids and these have been well-received, in addition to grindle worms and springtails... Good luck, happy herping!

It turns out I actually have 2 efts to work with. Unfortunately the garden we have definitely has fertilizers and other chemicals so I have to obtain food elsewhere.

Greetings! So, I've got a question for you: what's the best way to cool your newt enclosure? I've been working on a fairly large paludarium for kaiser newts for a while, but have run into temperature issues that have made me reconsider newts in general. I've read about fans, chillers, and even frozen bottles, but I'm worried fans would dry out and kill the plants, a chiller is pretty expensive, and the bottles likley wouldn't keep the temps stable. While I have ac and my home is kept around 74 degrees, it still reaches triple digits regularly in my area. Are there any other reliable (preferably wallet friendly) ways to cool my enclosure, or should I just look into firebelly toads or another temperature-tolerant animal?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds Год назад
Hey sorry for the late reply. I guess this mostly depends on where you live, but I keep my animals either outside in a garage or in the basement. They end up going through mostly natural temp changes, even through the summer. Other than a fan, I don't do much to cool them. They're in a shaded area and water evaporation actually does help with a bit of cooling. If you have a basement, I think this would help a lot since it's naturally cooler down there. If anything, the ac would probably help the most.

Should I put my new red eft in a 10 gallon instead of the 20 gallon that they are in? I feel maybe the 20 gallon is 2 big
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds Год назад
Yeah, I'd definitely go with a 10 gallon. Terrestrial newts seem to be pretty clumsy in hunting for their food in my experience, so less room for their food to escape/hide, the better.

So i have been keeping a couple efts for a while now.. i have been feeding them mostly some spring tails and white worms. How long does it take to introduce them to water? Do i wait until they show signs of aquatic features (eq: a paddled tail)?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds Год назад
It'll take quite sometime. You'll need to wait for them to mature, which can take a few years. The biggest sign would be adult colors developing in the efts.

I noticed how your newts know to find the food at the bottom of the tank, and can eat that way. For me, I have to tong feed them as they don't seem to eat the bloodworms if they are not right in front of them. The bottom of my tank is made up of long flat rocks and river pebbles (big enough that the newts cannot swallow them), but they still don't notice the food. How do I get my newts to eat without tong feeding?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 2 года назад
That's pretty interesting. If your newts are aquatic, I would think they should also go by smell to find the bloodworms. Maybe try some live food like earth worms and see if they notice those.

Hi, would a temporary bin be okay to raise a eft? I feel like the tank i bought him is a bit too big and he might have trouble finding his food, would a smaller bin stress my marble newt out though?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds Год назад
Hey, nope a smaller bin shouldn't be a problem at all.

@TheSalamanderWilds

Hi! You can definitely find axolotl listings on caudata.org - tons of reputable breeders on that website. There's also a ton of info about care for them as well.

Also since they are hydrophobic should I take the water dish out ?
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds Год назад
You can use a water dish as long as it's shallow, not above head level. Although, I personally try not to use a water dish and just make sure the substrate stays moist enough.

@@TheSalamanderWilds I’ve hat it since Friday I have fruit flies and I’m starting a spring tale culture . I also have a bunch of pill bugs , it obviously hasn’t eaten since I’ve had it , so today will be day 3 of no food . Do you feed them in a separate container or just in their enclosure ? I’m gonna put the spring tales and isopods in the tank hopefully it’ll eat. How would I even introduce the fruit flies do I just put them in there ? I feel like they’d never find them

Couldn't the eft be fed _Drosophila Melanogaster_ ? That's what I'm feeding to my _Triturus marmoratus_ efts.
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 2 года назад
I could give those a shot, but in my experience they're hit or miss since even flightless fruit flies tend to crawl up the side of the tank and escape the newt.

salamander dude, I have a problem I have planaria in my Spanish ribbed newt tank and there's a medicine called no planaria and it's safe for shrimps but I'm not sure for amphibians so do I have to take him out of the tank, and put him in a temporary tank and then put him back after? I'm in a rush there is a lot

also, I got a book for amphibians where I am, and there are eastern newts near me!
@TheSalamanderWilds
@TheSalamanderWilds 2 года назад
Hi! Sorry for the late reply! These medications aren't tested for amphibians so it would definitely be safer to remove the newt from the tank if you chose to use the medication. One way to get rid of planaria is to cut back on feeding though - check out this article to for more info: www.aquariadise.com/planaria-in-the-aquarium/
