Hey everyone! I'm back with another video and this time and I wanted to show how I'm currently keeping my newts during the colder temperatures of the winter season. A winter cooling period is necessary for breeding many salamander and newt species, and my method in particular has been pretty successful to initiate a courtship response.

Just a heads up mate, please don't put your heater on if the thermostat is out of the water(as in the video). Aquarium heaters are supposed to be submerged to work properly.

Have you considered water agitation instead of the heater to keep the ice away?

Is there a surefire way of deciphering between male and female efts? I'm thinking I have a male because he appears to have a small "lump" where his male parts would be, but its hard to tell. Hes at least 2 years old and maybe 2 inches long.

Hey there, it's usually best to wait until they sexually mature to get a definitive answer. The hind legs in males are usually wider and bigger for grasping females, but this isn't always easy to see in efts -- especially if they're quite young still.
