The engine doesn't look that used, just weathered from being left to rot... Thus the parts that didn't suffer too much, would be as good as they were when they last run. No need to use new parts :P

I worked for 3 years in a company that, among other things, dealt with the repair of tank engines, mainly Russian production. These are the real beasts of the engine, pure raw power. That was an interesting job.

Where are you from?
@krunobrzi666
@krunobrzi666 5 месяцев назад
@@josa4760 From Croatia, Karlovac.. the factory was for the production, service, repair of marine diesel generator sets, and it cooperated with the Croatian army, during the homeland war from 1990 to 1995. It was a complex of several connected plants, which produced energy machines and equipment... from diesel engines, all kinds of pumps, valves, compressors, steam turbines, gas turbines, sliding bearings... Unfortunately, it stopped working, like most of the industry in Croatia... because of the treacherous, corrupt government they didn't want to sell it to strong investors, who were interested... because they decided that we don't need industry, but only unsustainable mass tourism... But okay... now I've gone too deep into politics.

Nice rebuild! I like to work this way and rebuilt my car's engine last summer. I have noticed my self that when grinding valves it's good to open and close them as you spin them on the drill, when i don't do it i usually find some fine lines from trapped grit. You can also put a thin rubber hose on the valves when spinning them on the lathe.

Didn't think it was possible to machine a valve. I've just never even thought of trying it. I'm sure millions of "Technicians" had heart attacks just watching it. People that get real grease under their nails tend to do what works.

Machining valves is certainly possible (and relatively common) but theres tools designed for it so that you grind them evenly and at the right angle.

A good solution for a combat vehicle engine that is expected to have a HEAT round kill it on the battlefield well before it does enough miles or hours to require a valve job. Otherwise, yes it makes adjustment easy but at the expense of valve face and seat life because the valve is not rotating. Evidence the fact that just about all 48 of the vales on that engine were leaking. So not a good solution for an automotive engine expected to do 100,000+ miles before any serious repair is needed.
