Always keep a lighter or a mini torch on the boat, I prefer Bic lighters myself. There are endless uses for a reliable lighter on a boat or just being outdoors in general. I'm suggesting this for everybody, not just robbie ;). Great video as always!

@@recordfishhunter9234 you can never learn enough about the sport and the outdoors in general! Thanks for the question. But I don't like to tell people on the internet where I live, no offense, let's just say I'm a state away from Wisconsin. But I appreciate the questions. You can always ask me anything else about fishing!

been a very slow year but last week we spent a week up in park falls area and landed a 36 and 2 38s, so I do feel better about the rest of the season. I hope some cooler weather comes around in the janesville area so I can get back on the mad chain. Good luck to you rob.

A little Pete Maina summer releasing tip...point your fish down at a 45° angle, because the surface temps and oxygen increase the deeper you get her head. Much easier releases, and fish won't swim on the surface. Think about standing chest deep in water...your feet are colder than your chest. Give it a try when the surface temps are high.
@Themuskychannel
@Themuskychannel 3 года назад
So I am no pro or a biologist or a scientist but, my thinking is that a gill popping in and out the water would introduce more oxygen then trying to hold the head down in deeper water, considering you can only force the head down so low, i fish a Indiana musky lake quite frequently and even in the deepest part of the lake when water temps are 70-80 the surface temp is pretty consistent about 6 foot down, now as far as the oxygen level idk but I think the most important thing is that people are educated on protocol on handling, also things that are going to prolong a fight are probably not best and unless it’s some Godzilla slob doing water pics and a quick water release is not a bad idea if you must fish in hot temps. Bill Murray, could you post a link or article from Pete saying that? I’d like to educate myself on that technique, I think I’ll try that next time, thanks for the tip.
@3billm
@3billm 3 года назад
@@Themuskychannel I fish shallow lakes in the Kawarthas, in Ontario. I read it in a magazine a long time ago, & noticed it helped us with quicker releases. Perhaps it's different on deeper water, I wouldn't know. There was something about more oxygen in cooler water, but like you, I'm not a biologist or scientist either. We just noticed that they swam away stonger and quicker using one hand on the tail and the other holding it's head below the surface. I DO remember Maina saying his boat buddy told him the tip, & Pete was just writing an article about it. I also got to mention it to him at one of our Musky shows a few years ago. I'll try to find the Esox Angler mag the article was in.
@TodaysAngler
@TodaysAngler 3 года назад
Perhaps they swim away quicker at that angle could be due to the fact that is not the natural angle they typically sit? Just an observation
@Wastingtime689
@Wastingtime689 3 года назад
@@Themuskychannel the gills themselves (not the arches) basically collapse out of water, so having the gill exposed to air would probably result in less oxygen than just keeping the head submerged.
@Themuskychannel
@Themuskychannel 3 года назад
Makes sense, about the gills not having buoyancy out of water and collapsing I can wrap my head around that and yeah idk, I think a good rule of thumb is trying to leave things how you received them, it’s why we hold the fish horizontally instead of vertical, keep things as “natural” as possible (I know that is not the right words to use considering we’re taking fish out of water lol) but ya get the point

What's with the frothy, grey stuff at the outer edges of her gill plates? Is that normal in all muskies? Having lived in the south, and not ventured north to fish, was introduced to these muscular, toothy fish in Outdoor Life magazine. Kind of a freshwater version of barracuda or kingfish.

@Themuskychannel
@Themuskychannel 3 года назад
Yeah I’m going to have to agree, I think I would call the one Robbie used a “improved” Palomar knot, just like a “improved trilene knot I prefer a regular trilene knot, the one he used kind of reminds me of a fly fishing knot to add action to a fly, but I’m fairly new to the sport so keeping things simple stupid is a must for myself. But keeping a open mind and learning from others is a must. Being a small business owner and employing people I try not to look at how long one has done a certain trade, it doesn’t matter how long you have done something in life, if you have been doing wrong the whole time.
