In 2015, the Ukrainian Armed Forces decided to utilize the stockpiles of T-80BV tanks inherited from the collapse of the USSR for the needs of the airborne troops. The main factor in this decision was the mobility of the tanks, provided by their powerful gas turbine engine. The first 8 overhauled and slightly modernized tanks were received by the personnel of the 95th Separate Assault Airborne Brigade in July 2015, followed by further deliveries not only for the airborne units, but also for the marines.
At the latest in 2019, modernized T-80BVs began to arrive at the units instead of the overhauled T-80BVs. The manufacturing plant used the experience from the modernization of the T-64BV model 2017 for these tanks, which included a new infrared sight and night observation system, new dynamic protection, additional armor on the sides, a tank position tracking and transmission system, and more. But that's for another time.
