Who would have thought small grid blocks mixed with wheels is actually really fun, there are allot of ways to build tank tracks, some may be good others may be bad, but at the end of the day a tank track is a tank track, there are only so many ways you can build one, but how the Tank track attaches to the tank that is a different matter, there are almost endless ways.
If you enjoy what I do please consider liking the video and sub for more content in the future, it would mean allot.

when clawing over larger obstacles, consider a 4th Bogie to lengthen the overall track system. then, add the Hull Deck for some substance. the real question for me is how Survival Ready are they and how hard will their use impact one's computer performance
@quantumchief
@quantumchief 2 года назад
To be honest I have found little impact in performance but I do have a beast of a pc, it’s more about connecting the tracks back to the hull when not in use to stop them getting deleted. As for your idea, I might have to try marking the tracks longer
@gelobledo

Wish they would add a tank tread block. Everyone of those rotors is 100 PCU so it only makes sense to make these if its for show or you only have one vehicle. Still pretty neat though
@brandonfrye1834
@brandonfrye1834 6 месяцев назад
That's why I use a mod that reduces block PCU
@gelobledo
@gelobledo 6 месяцев назад
@brandonfrye1834 oh really. What's that mod I will have to check it out. Always stress about PCU in builds

Flare's Armor PCU removal@@gelobledo im not 100% sure if it effects rotors or not. but it does with armor blocks, and i think some others its on steam as well as mod io

Excellent work. Also in my opinion tracks should be available in a vanilla game by default, same as advanced suspensions.

Maybe add a sort of ballast system with pistons and/or rotors so that you can control your center of mass to ascend inclines

I have never once built a tracked vehicle in SE just for the fact I don't trust the game that much. However I have suggestions for you from experience with other builds that should/might improve them 1) Use suspension blocks. Replace the wheel with the placeable block versions. Using build vision I believe you can do the attach command on them similar to rotors and if you get the block wheel close enough to the suspension it should click on when told to attach. The suspension blocks can be WASD controlled and tension the tracks. Skid steering script recommended. 2) if grip is an issue replace the interior pillar blocks on the tracks with a small 1x1 wheel suspension and max out the friction. Assuming they stay parking braked it should be far more than enough to climb steep hills 3) If you are afraid of the tracks getting trash removal'ed stick a battery on them somewhere and turn all of the rotors off. They should in theory use no power and the single battery will never run out of energy so its considered a live grid. 4) If you are brave enough to try mag plates on the tracks being triggered by sensors, it would probably be able to go vertical and or drive on ceilings (poorly but it should work, albeit in a straight line).
@quantumchief
@quantumchief Год назад
allot of really good ideas there, with your last one using mag plates, i feel that is 100% death to i will be 100% doing it, also i do have plans on using wheels attached to suspension, that will also be in a part 2
@6105boe
@6105boe Год назад
I wonder, if you replace every single one of the 1x1 cylinder blocks with 1x1 wheels, if you manage it before losing your mind, would you perhaps have more grip?
@quantumchief
@quantumchief Год назад
I might try it, also it’s not that hard to change you just make two segments the copy and past until you get the length you need.
@6105boe
@6105boe Год назад
@@quantumchief oh yeah, that makes sense. Hadn’t thought of that since right now I just play survival and so I wouldn’t even think of attempting something like tank tracks :p

You need to design a drive wheel that is gear like that fits into gaps in the track to drive the track better to over come the friction issue.

I am sure this is very late to even mention, but like I seen another post mention, I would add smallest wheels to the center of your pillar blocks on the tracks with max friction setting, and I believe that'll solve any traction issues you experienced during development, I've been trying to design tracks myself, and I am not a fan of how costly, time consuming, and unrealistically large the whole thing turns out to be, this is a game that literally should've had tracks in game to begin with, in current NASA programs and development they use tracks all the time on rovers and other vehicles depending on the type of mission or landscape they think will be present and how best to fit systems to conquer those terrains and/or logistics, I've been playing SE for 3 months as of this writing, I'm on Xbox, and I was stunned from the start to find put there were no tracks available, makes no damn sense to me at all!!?? Hopefully Keen will at some point finally offer those systems, especially since it's been years now from what I've seen in many videos that players have been building tracks with blocks provided, we already have wheels, we have thrusters, but we have no tracks, it's like evolution completely skipped a form or mutation and went straight to flight and space lol...

Hypotheticaly, if I emailed you a blueprint of a "thing" I built, do you think tracks would help or is the idea just not pheasable in SE.. to clarrify, its essential and aircraft carrier on wheeled outriggers. Deserts of Kerahk style.
@quantumchief
@quantumchief 2 года назад
Probably not, you need to build the track set up before the rest of the vehicle to be able to tension the tracks. Also of you ever wanted to show me a blueprint you have build we have a section on my discord

I get what you are meaning but due to friction on block to block I still don’t think it would drive well
@petrzacharias6622
@petrzacharias6622 Год назад
What i miss is customizable friction block. I absolutely hate moments when tracks literally slip on ground, i build tracks for climbing and it is stupid when wheels have better friction than tracks. Yes, i can slap little 1x1 wheels on tracks but it looks stupid.

11:20 iirc the hitbox of wheels are sphere not cylindrical like the wheel shape, no?
@quantumchief
@quantumchief Год назад
I believe the hit box are cylinders but I was basically connecting too half blocks to make a full block so I think the game said no
@Chronostra
@Chronostra Год назад
@@quantumchief the wheels on wheel and suspension is indeed have spherical collision/hitbox, while the standalone wheels (that can be placed like a block and have two snap points in each center) are cylindrical. Like I mentioned on your short, you can snap rotor heads/standalone wheels on suspension block using buildvision. That way you can adjust the gap easier, probably. Also different suspension (1x1, 3x3 and 5x5) have different setting effect and "torque" iirc. One sec ill add an example if you don't mind

Sorry bro but since all kind of terrains have the same friction to the wheels, having tracks is pretty much just a downgrade. They are slow, very vulnerable, and consumes a lot of time to build them. Idk what was your point with these however its really cool and useless in the same time.
