A reliable, small grid elevator design that integrates with large grid, can be expanded as long as the player wants, and can stop at any point on the track. It works in space as well as on moving ships.

Yeah I was thinking how cool it would be to have a larger version where you ride inside the gear compartment, as in you walk between the gear to enter and there's glass/grates on the inside of the carriage. The roof that would form could also make a better surface for the roof bumpers so it doesn't get tilted like this one does.

I ran into a similar problem trying to put that oversized 'gatling railgun' into a more practical setup. I was bound to the arbitrary size of the large-grid and small-grid block, and I had to write my own trig formulas for overall size and shape, number of 'barrels', RoF, how to aim it reliably, and not kill your ship's batteries; without having an irregular shaped unit which would misfire or fire into the subgrid it was attached to, as funny as that was when I was testing it, lol.

This will make large scale vehicle transport so much easier. No longer will we have to worry about scratching the side of our ships as we ascend from our cavernous bases. With the press of a button we could have any number of ships or rovers delivered to us. Personally, I would look into a way to make it more omnidirectional; able to go up and down, left to right and forward and back as well. Although, that would likely require a little over engineering and a handful of custom scripts

I wonder then if you could do a kind of retractable landing platform... like, a door opens, and the gears extend a platform outward for you to land a ship on, then they can retract back into the base and the door closes behind it. Or, if you wanted to go really out there, maybe a kind of self-building mine. Place a main vertical structure over the ore spot with the main machine in the center; have a drill setup underneath, and above that a series of welders that could build the gear track as it descends, with the gears near the top of the machine above the welders.

So, the problem i always have with elevators is creating a call function; some way to summon the elevator to a designated floor with the press of a button. It's easy if the elevator only has two stops, but if you have a middle floor I tend to have difficulty bringing the elevator to that designated point. Suggestions? I know you have the camera idea in this one, but something a little more seamless would be nice.
@SweaterPower
@SweaterPower 2 года назад
I think there is a way to do it using sensors, configured to detect small grid. You can place it one block underneath the floor level, and time it to stop the elevator. Call buttons on floors and floor buttons on elevator can disable all sensors except one on the selected floor. It will be hard to configure, but i think it should work
@SweaterPower
@SweaterPower 2 года назад
The only problem I see - how to detect is elevator higher or lower the selected floor. System should remember which floor is elevator on, and decide the direction of the rotor. Sounds like a job for programming block, which is not as exiting as doing it "vanilla way"
@BlackArmor718
@BlackArmor718 2 года назад
Unless the elevator is at the bottom and locked to the connector, it is not attached to the surrounding structure. You can't communicate with it without an RC block/antenna or making a ridiculously long line of cable using hinges.

I would add one thing and that is a set of landing gear on either side to act as an emergency brake system in case the batteries lose power.

I know this post is from a long time ago but for anyone watching this in 2024, you can use sensors to detect the top and bottom of the elevator shaft and stop the rotors

It's amazing on how you figure on how to make a elevator with game made gears.

Amazing creation, I've got some great Ideas to improve upon your work. You could use sensors to automatically make it stop at floors. I would also change it so that the elevator itself doesn't have a railing but the floor you are going to does. This way, whenever the elevator is in use there is a rail instead of a hole to fall into for the people on the floors where the elevator isn't.

The same sensor could operate at-floor grates, like how irl industrial elevators have two sets of doors (which make a bloody horrendous noise when they close)

With the new turret control block you could use this in your ceiling as a rolling crane to pick up fighters or vehicles. Have this slide horizontally along the width of your fighter bay and us a rotor and hinge to make the crane.

I dunno if this game even has them but one way to solve the energy issue would be to just have electrical pickups on either side of the shaft, so the elevator is always being charged even while moving. Or just some sort of short-range remote charging devices, at regular intervals.
