Tanker Delivery--textbook procedure

Pretty much a textbook delivery of gasoline and diesel fuel in a split load. Driver goes through all procedures methodically and thoroughly. Of course it was a nice day and conditions were very good. Only problem area is how the tanks are situated on the site, making the positioning of the truck difficult. You'd rather not have to back up a trailer into an area where people are walking and driving.

I never attach product hose to truck first like he did. I also never attach vapor elbow with out a hose connected because it blows gas vapors out once the plunger is pushed in. It's a 4 step process.. 1: vapor hose to truck 2: vapor hose to vapor elbow, then to ground (keeps a completely closed system) 3: product hose to tank fill 4: product hose to truck. Opposite when unhooking. And although backing one of them is easier than a double pivot, they do have more trouble turning in tight stations.

Your right. Always attach to tight fill first . To many guys have opened their valve before connecting to tight fill. Especially if talking to someone or something distracts you for a few seconds.

The four step process you talk of is how we do it at marathon up here in Alaska! If Marathon saw this they would be shitting them selves and ripping you a new one, especially using the buckets like that.

not textbook. worked for Amaco/bp for 20 yrs. you NEVER hook to trailer first. never have an unconnected hose hooked to a trailer. great way to have a spill.

Here in North Dakota, vapor recovery isn't required! That's makes it so much nicer! Not only less hoses and stuff to connect but don't have a trailer full of explosive vapors to worry about!!
@MrR6pilot

so you just vent them to the atmosphere instead .......
@planethedgehog2427
@planethedgehog2427 Год назад
> don't have a trailer full of explosive vapors to worry about!! Oh the hell you don't. The fuel that was in that tanker compartment left the inside of the compartment nice and wet, and it's volatile; it will and does produce vapors. Also, those vapors, and especially any condensate, count as whatever product you last picked up at the loading rack. So do not even think about turning the product ID wheel to "EMPTY" on that compartment unless and until the compartment has actually been washed. DOT can bust you for that.

he should ground the truck by getting the elbow connection hocked on the ground reservoir opening and then the hose . only after, that you can connect your hose to the 4*6 on the truck supply pipe. your vapor hose should be connected to the elbow arm first before attaching it to the ground vapor outlet. the metal bucket is not grounded. the driver is not wearing any protective gear against electrostatic and spill. I think he need to be re-trained. He also shouldn't be talking to people while working it can break his concentration on what is more important

Interesting. I work in Canada and if I delivered like that I'd be fired. We are required to cone of the area with cones and barriers we intend to back up into. Also we are required to wear long sleeve fr shirts and pants with safety vests. Interesting to see the differences between countries.

The majority of the time when there is multiple vapor recoveries, they are manifolded together. I’ve seen only one place with two separate vapor recoveries not manifolded together. I’d imagine the un lead and premium are manifolded together.

In this video i saw the Scully sistem for load with overfilling checking...but there isn't nothing to connect for static electricity flashing for connect tank at the ground before connect anything else(is very important for unleaded). And yes is correct to connect vapour pipe to diesel too,the unload must be everytime in close circuit(lose time? Lose 3 minutes!,It is nothing to compare big damages!). I used for many years truck and trailer with 9 sections divide tanks in truck,plus 9 sections tank on trailer,It was BEAUTIFUL to know how use a lot of pipes togheter to unload differents products from differents tanks with different liters(1000/2000/5000),in different holes.It was require ti stay there with the brain!!!
@Jahmall841
@Jahmall841 6 лет назад
It depends on the company you work for. Most have unloading procedures that they teach you but most drivers get lazy and do it the easiest way possible until they get in trouble.. I never connect vapor to truck first because if there is fuel in the vapor now it’s in the hose not connected to anything.. but he got it done so for him that all that matters.. Also those buckets are to relieve the pressure on his back as it always the fuel a smooth path to the tank so he does not have to lift the hoses to drain them. This will strain your back doing 3 gas station per day carrying 87,93 and diesel or E85 Best of luck

No one commented about having the second 87 tank uncapped, both vapor and liquid drops. A good way for fumes and fuel to come out of the tank. I know a couple of drivers that it happened to. He must have topped off the first tank because he was emptying out of Comp 4 into the second tank. i also heard the bucket jumped and saw the hose moving when the flapper in the tank shut off the flow at 12:03.

Could you explain more what you saw happening? "...second 87 (octane) tank uncapped, both vapor and liquid drops"? What do you mean? "A good way for fumes and fuel to come out of the tank."? The tank; not the compartment?
@planethedgehog2427
@planethedgehog2427 Год назад
@@sardonic_smile_8752 I think he meant that not only is it bad practice to just leave the underground storage tank (UST) open to the air (adding to pollution), but because the USTs are often manifolded together for vapor recovery, if something goes wrong and the driver dumps more fuel than the intended UST can hold, that additional fuel will reach the top of the UST (sure am glad I defined that, given how many times I'm using it :) and then it'll flow up through the vapor system and spill over into the next UST. If the excess fuel overflowing from the first UST is enough to overfill the second UST, now, because UST #2 is open to the world, the fuel will start flooding the gas station parking lot! Oops! Also, even if the neighboring UST has plenty of room, the vapor system isn't meant to carry liquids. If that were the case, they might let us use them to conveniently fill multiple USTs if they all contain the same product, without having to move our hose and nozzle from one UST to the next. Also, if all we have uncapped are the vapor and the one UST's fill port, with liquid and vapor hoses connected, we have a closed system with a 1:1 volume exchange going on, with liquid going into the ground and vapor going into our tanker, replacing the liquid that is leaving. If we overfill that UST, there can be some spillover into UST #2 via the manifolded-together vapor system, but it'll be slow going, without a wide-open to the air fuel delivery port. There's kind of nowhere for the air in UST #2 to go, as fuel tries to spill over into it through the vapor manifold line, so it will be a slow glug glug glug sort of process. And without easy, fast flow into UST #2, when UST #1 reaches its max, you'll hopefully start to wonder why there's no or almost no fuel flowing anymore, but your delivery hose weighs 100 pounds or more.🤔🤔🤔 Then you'll hopefully close your valve to stop more fuel from exiting the tanker compartment you're emptying, and hope that several thirsty cars come in to buy a 20 or 30 gallons, depending on diameter and length of your delivery hose, so that after people buy that fuel, you might have a hose that's safe to disconnect from the UST. Your manager will be less upset if you at least didn't disconnect the loading elbow and hose from the UST's delivery port while the hose still had 20 or 30 gallons of fuel in it. That would make a big puddle! And that's my short answer.🎉😀

Phil Sousa its a huge mistake. A number of things can happen. He could forget he isn't hooked to the ground connection and pull his valve. He could have had residual product in his compartment and let 10 maybe 15 gallons spill

Sparky Pal or he’s just knows he’s not hooked up to the drop gun and knows not to pull the valve. This is not a ‘huge’ mistake, it’s no big deal for an experienced driver

It doesn’t matter if experienced driver or not,mistakes can happen. You should never have a hose connected to a live compartment with an open end on the other side. Learn it right the first time and avoid ever making that mistake.
@edmundsmith7199
@edmundsmith7199 3 года назад
Never, never connect to a compartment without making the connection to the tank first. Stick the regular unleaded tank first and get that started. It’s probably the largest volume of product and will take the longest to unload. You can stick the other tanks and start them while the first compartment is draining.

25year tank mechanic here. This us why tanker tandems have to be built stronger than rock trucks . tanks are rarely driven unloaded for very long and when load it loaded to the legal capacity . all these tight turns in these stations and what not are rough on any tank and require more T.L.C. unfourtunly most tanker companys are the cheapest s.o.bs in the trucking biss. Often forcing drivers to use defective equip to drop just one more load as they say then two months go by the bring it to me with axils hanging off the unit and then want me to get it back to them by theva.m shift ....all ways....and then cry when they get the bill for all the parts ...even at my cost no mark up, and will still bitch

@@planethedgehog2427 Old post but yeah. Another thing that's senseless is this 9/10 in the price. What's up with THAT? Eventually, the price will be $10.00 9/10. So if I want to purchase exactly ONE gallon, how much do I pay?

@@jakejones5736 > Old post Yep, but things stay on the internet forever. Plus, people are still saying "unleaded," so it isn't as though the world stopped engaging in your peeve. > Eventually, the price will be $10.00 9/10. So if I want to purchase exactly ONE gallon, how much do I pay? Well, under Biden, the target price for one gallon *is* $10.009! The late Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes addressed your $0.009 appended to unit prices for fuel as a gripe of his. In terms of gas station pump operation, you probably will find that the pump won't let you dispense a quantity increment less that one cent. It might not be the case everywhere, but my experience has been, when aiming for a chosen volume rather than price, the pump will jump past my target if it isn't a multiple of 10 gallons. It seems that the volume is a rounded value out the three decimal places, whereas the purchase total drives the pump to force incremental quantities to be in discreet volumes equal to $0.01. I wish I knew a gas station owner who would set his price to $0.009 per gallon, yeah, under a penny, to see whether the pump would force me to buy $0.01 worth of fuel, namely 1.111 gallons. I'll try to remember to attempt to get the pump to stop on discreet gallons (e.g., 1.000, 2.000, 3.000) and see whether it fights me until I hit 10.000 gallons.

So much safety , but far from textbook. The first 3 minutes of backing up a fuel truck at a service station without a spotter is a huge safety concern. Look at the car that shot behind him right off the bat. Maybe at 75 years old and still driving and having hauled fuel in Canada for 18 years we see things others don't. I'm far from perfect , because I still learn things all the time. Doing super B , deck work the last 14 years.
