This is episode 2 of the Tankwa Karoo series on the "Ironvan" Adventures. There is a spectacular mountain pass, and rustic accommodation and Johan makes Quinton taste food not to his liking.
Ouberg is a truly spectacular pass, with beautiful scenery, rising through 600 m of Roggeveld escarpment in a series of dramatic switchbacks. Pioneer farmers used this route for more than 80 years for their seasonal sheep trek up and down the mountain. Ouberg has a lovely view of the escarpment of the Roggeveld Mountain range, 45 km from Sutherland. It's also a very popular birding spot where you will find the African Rock Pipit, Pale-winged Starling and Cape Eagle Owls.
The road surface is not bad, a 4WD drive or a vehicle with a difflock is required for the trip up. There is one lookout point about halfway down, large enough to accommodate a number of vehicles.

Gannaga Lodge is situated in 20 hectares of its own ground within the Tankwa National Park. It is located in the Roggeveld Karoo, in some of the most spectacular countrysides in the Northern Cape, at the summit of the breathtaking Gannaga Pass.
The Lodge lies 28 kilometres from Middelpos on the dirt road between there and Ceres. Middelpos itself is situated on the R354, exactly halfway between Sutherland and Calvinia. Gannaga Lodge is the only establishment within the boundaries of the National Park that offers bed and breakfast, half-board and full-board accommodation, as well as restaurant and bar facilities.

The Perdekloof Campsite was opened in early 2012 and is situated at the mouth of the Perdekloof gorge. The campsite is a stone's throw from the Hoenderhoek rivulet, a tributary of the Renoster River.
Each of the six stands have their own bathroom and kitchenette, side-to-side with only one other stand. Stands are nestled among the natural riverine vegetation with Karee (Sersea lancea), Sweet Thorn (Acacia karroo) and various Ganna species (Salsola spp.) predominating.
