If you're wondering why the word 'tyres' is mentioned twice in the title, well that's to account for international spelling variations!

I have these on my electric bike. I was constantly getting pinch flats because of the motor being heavy. But now I can ride easy and carefree. My front tyre is a normal tyre with an inner tube, I leave it this way just so I can have a slightly more comfortable ride, but I still have a nagging feeling that I may get a flat in that one. Best decision ever to get the Tannus tyre , I recommend this to anyone who commutes. I would also recommend that you tape up the little hole that is left from the valve, so as water will not collect inside the tyre.

the difference being solid tires then meant actually solid rubber. Really heavy and not very good at shock absorption. Put that on a modem bike and the thing will fall apart before long. Today's "airless tires" are made of a special material that isn't like solid rubber. It's specially designed to be as close to regular tires as possible, including shock absorption.

The tires don't really feel like tires. Without exaggerating, the lack of pneumatic pressure does make the ride a lot more bumpy.

Update to my post of 1 year ago. After around 3500 miles my rear had a few skid patches of extra wear that were slipping out on me when out of the saddle pushing up significant gradients. In general the tyre was fine and would have done many more miles of general riding apart from these very step parts. So, time to change. I had begun to not enjoy the harshness of the ride so I considered going back to air but couldn't bare the thought of going back to punctures, so opted for a straight replacement. When the shop got my existing tyre off they found that nearly half my spoke heads were coming through the rim - a consequence of solid tyres I guess. That was the bad news - new wheel time. The good news was I could choose a rim to take the 32 mm 700 tyre with lower 80 psi rating. I'm now riding the existing 700x28 on the front (close to 4000 miles and loads of wear left) and 700x32 on the rear. Six months on this configuration and I'm happier than ever with the set up. The rear 32mm has made a decent difference to the comfort and I've not noticed any detrimental impacts to the ride at all. When the front eventually gives out I will probably replace the wheel to & run the 32 mm on the front as well. Hope it helps.

I've had these for a year now and cannot recommend them enough, I forgot that pressure checks and punctures exist. My Bag is so much lighter from no puncture kits, spare tubes or pumps. Another big advantage is that the millisecond of clenching before hitting a sharp pothole is gone haha. If these ever show any sign of wear I will definitely get them fitted again but they still look new after 10miles a day for the last year.

I recently cycled 200 miles through Holland and Belgium and got a puncture just before the ferry (this was on my geared bike). I fixed the puncture on the roadside but the tyre was flat again by the time I got back to England. Sigh.

I took the bike out for a quick 20km today. As I suspected the tyres heated up (it was approx. 32 degrees, but the road was probably hotter) and as predicted the tyres became soft. This softness seemed to add drag to my ride, and my time on this familiar route. I was noticeably slower than normal (I generally do around 26-27 kph average over 20km, but this ride was 16 kph average), I had to stop several times to recover, which is not normally in my cycling repertoire. I have to add that I am getting over a chest infection and have not been out for over 2 weeks, this may have added to the extra labor but I can't see the deficit being 10kph slower.

Ridden these for 70 miles per week for 8 months now. They take a while to settle down and compress a bit. At first the grip was not great but once bedded in and scrubbed off the grip is fine. I've ridden through the British winter with no grip issues. They are a harsh ride as they are pretty hard but you get used to it. For real speed freaks I think they are a bit slower due to their hardness. Think how you go slower over cobbles due to vibrations, well scale it down on normal road tarmac etc and I think they are slightly slower but then I'm only commuting to work and have no lycra so don't care. I bought these when I changed office and had 7 punctures in 3 weeks. No punctures, issues or problems in the last 8 months. Some people have posted about picking shards out of them etc, I've never had to do that. Now the are on I give them no care whatsoever. Wear wise they look like they'll last forever, or close to it and I'm 85kg plus the bike. I got the supplier to fit but he included that in a service price so worth investigating if you can get that deal. I'm not a particularly careful rider, bumping up kerbs, riding cobbles etc and no grip issues and no broken spokes since fitted. Overall I'd say if you want commuting or training tyres to fit and forget then go for these. If I could guarantee 1-2 punctures per year I'd probably go back to my old Continental GP's 4 season for commuting. However, I can't guarantee that and so I'll be sticking with the tanks tyres and leaving the spares and tools at home. Overall very happy with them and would buy again if ever these wear out.

Most difficult installation I've ever done. But considering how often I won't have to remove a tire, fix a flat, and reinstall, I think I'm way ahead on the question of labor. It should be noted that some of the tires are available in three hardnesses: H/R/S. The Tannus site oddly doesn't elaborate but I assume that stands for Hard, Regular, Soft. I got the R, which feel like tube tires pumped up fairly hard but they give slightly when you press in with your thumb. They're hard enough to ride fast but give enough to be comfortable. I haven't tried the hard but, based on the regular, I wouldn't recommend the hard unless you ride only on smooth roads or else you might get a bit sore on long rides. You may want the soft if you only do shorter rides but you may get tired on longer rides. Again, I haven't tried them so I don't know just how soft they are. IMPORTANT: Tannus has a limited selection and may not have a size that fits your rim. Measure your rim's inside width with calipers before ordering. Don't just go by what's printed on it. Go to the Tannus website and be sure you carefully read all of the notes about sizing and installation. These tires are less forgiving than tubed tires. If you don't get the correct size, or if you use the wrong pins to install, or if you install incorrectly, the tire could come loose at a very inconvenient time. Properly sized and installed, they lock on like a crocodile bite.

But I was concerned of the grip, since i guess they are quite hard compound, but in your video and comments is quite obvious that is wet and cold and it not seems to be any issues at all... perfect... I am going to buy a couple of this tyres for my bike, take a couple of day of to mount them (I saw the video instructions and seems quite a long and complicate work) and then I will enjoy all my rides without any concern at all... thanks for the video...

Great Review Andrew! I hope Tannus will bring out their Tires for Tubular Rims soon. Because tubular rims are stiffer than clincher rims and the mounting of a tubular tire is much easier than mounting the recent Tannus tires on clincher rims.

My experience with Tannus tires has NOT been good. I put 700x40 Tannus tires on my Cannondale Quick 2, which I use for commuting ~100mi/wk. Installation is a pain, but I expected that. What I did not expect was the terrible performance of these tires. They roll slow, and don't grip the road well. It was immediately apparent that rolling resistance on these tires was much higher than an equivalent pneumatic tire. My normal 55 min commute takes me at least 1:15 on the Tannus tires, and I feel like I'm working harder to go slower. One would think - high rolling resistance = more grip. Not with these tires. They are quite loose and skittish in corners, and rough or uneven surfaces. They handle so poorly, I won't risk riding them in wet conditions. After dropping over $80 each on these tires, I have to go back to traditional tires. If you're willing to make a significant performance sacrifice for no flats, these might work for you. Otherwise, stick with traditional tires.

Tannus tyres are not solid tyres as they have got millions of tiny air bubbles in them which provide the cushoning. They are about 95 per cent air and about 5 per cent polyurethane rubber. Similar to the type of material which is used in cavity wall insulation. By the way these tyres are worth just for the peace of mind about not having to worry about punctures which are such a nuisance as with pneumatic tyres you have to carry tools and a puncture repair kit and a spare inner tube in case the puncture is too big to patch.

Perez I have no idea. It would take me years to do the kind of mileage these tyres are allegedly capable of. I assume Tannus has a way of putting them under mechanical stress to test longevity. In much the same way Ikea have mechanical arses to sit on chairs thousands of times.

Good review, Andrew. Really useful. How do you cope with broken spokes? I know they are a horror to take off and put on. Do folks just get used to doing this? SImon
@AndrewCulture
@AndrewCulture 8 лет назад
Good question, I wouldn't fancy taking them off and then trying to put them back on again. In the past (before using solid tyres) when I broke spokes I could fit new spokes without even deflating the tyre. As long as the screw (nipple?) is intact then I would thread the new spoke through the hole on the hub and screw it into the nipple. In theory I guess that would be easier with solid tyres as the nipple should stay more or less where it is after a spoke breaks, rather than falling into the rim as it can with pneumatic tyres.
@simonwatson9730
@simonwatson9730 8 лет назад
AndrewCulture Hi Andrew, Thanks for your thoughtful reply. You're right. Of course you don't always have to take the tyre off, especially if the spoke thread has been greased and you don't need the extra leverage of a screwdriver on the other side. I'm actually looking for a wheel system that will "never" fail on me. It's for a bike trailer I'm building that will take a heavy puppet show around London. A break down could put me in a very difficult situation (failing to arrive for a show and having trouble getting anywhere further under my out steam - I can't put it on a train). I've got three wheel challenges/solutions: Flats - I've had good results with Schwalbe Marathon plus, but Tannus are 100 percent, puncture proof. I don't think they are available in the wider 20" size (1.75) I'm using. Broken spokes / buckled wheels - I've just bought Skyway BMX wheels (they're bomb proof). Axals - Skyway axals are pretty thick. I will take a spare trailer wheel anyway. Regarding the bike itself, Tannus looks like a good option. I'm thankful for you helping me weigh up the pro's and cons.

Nadia Williams I'm still pleased with these tyres. I don't notice any difference between these and my old tyres now. Still not too sure I'd put them on my 'fast' bike though. But Tannus have just launched some lightweight tyres for roadies and I'm tempted to give them a go.

I must say I think from what I've read about a few different people who've tried them, that the benefits would outweigh any drawbacks. +AndrewCulture Hi I have had them on my bike for nearly 1 month now in the January - February 2016 weather. They are definitely harder than the pneumatic ones I used to ride but not unbearable. I feel they have only slightly less grip than normal tyres in wet and frosty conditions. I would recommend them to anyone who is fed up with punctures and uses a bike to commute to a from work as I am really hoping they just never let you down. There is a growing number of commuters using bikes and I feel local stockist and fitters would really see them into the mainstream

I'm a 34 year veteran road rider. I see no real advantage in running this kind of tire unless perhaps being forced to ride through construction areas with lots of broken glass, nails and other nasty bits at night. Schwalbe makes bullet proof casings that will achieve the same results at 1/3 the price. However, if you're so lazy that you can't keep the tire pressure up every few days and break a wheel to replace a tube or patch it, then this tire is for you. Oh, forgot to mention there are also tire sealants that will repair a hole if you do have a puncture.
@chatteyj
@chatteyj 6 лет назад
Fixing punctured tyres is an absolute ball ache. I didn't cycle all last year because my tyres needed mending (or rather the inner tubes) and I'm sick to death of mending inner tubes and getting punctures.. If they can develop a tyre that never gets a puncture and performs well I shall be all over it.
@winniewinston8377
@winniewinston8377 6 лет назад
I'm a veteran road rider too. Had terrible accident where front punctured whilst going downhill at speed. Immediately changed to Tannus - one (of many) danger of cycling eliminated. Nothing to do with laziness - it's about safety
@raywood1
@raywood1 6 лет назад
Not sure what a "34 year veteran road rider" is. I've been riding on the road for about 58 years. That seems unrelated to the question of whether I like flat tires.
@C345OFR
@C345OFR 6 лет назад
To echo Devonian: this isn't about laziness, especially when cycling is your only reliable mode of transport and you have no other choice. Frequent punctures are a reality of riding in a major city; they are a PITA and can be time-consuming. Frankly I've got better things to do with my spare time than repeatedly fix tubes. And no, Schwalbe *do not* make casings that will achieve the same results - that implies zero punctures in an air-filled setup, forever. Not even Schwalbe would make that claim ¬.¬

@AndrewCulture
@AndrewCulture Год назад
As a town bike in a reasonably flat part of the world single speed bikes are incredibly practical. You can use a single speed in any weather and not have to worry about having to clean grit and muck out of a transmission. No gears means far fewer cables and shifters to maintain, fix or replace. Singlespeed chains are much bigger and stronger than the chains on geared bikes. All in all single speed bikes are great town bikes, but they are a young man's bike. I no longer ride single speed bikes, my knees can't handle it!
