Tansania and Zanzibar Drone Regulations - Watch before your Trip 

I think about 4 weeks. With a lot of waiting :) I hope it is possible a bit faster, if you call them first.

In Tanzania I found the local MP är my hotel bar, I ordered him a beer and he granted me permission right there and then 😁

Hello Maggie, it seems to be something new or it is depending of size and weight of the drone. For my mavic they did not ask for that. I just filled in the form which I linked above and called several times and several people to find someone who will approve it... I had to do a piloting license, which I don't need in Germany, but they request it. After that it was so much of a problem. In fact, most difficult was to find someone who will look at the documents I sent....

Hi Joe, I understand your problem. In Germany we have a lot of companies who offer drone insurance and normally the offer whole world protection (except for US). But you need a German address for this and they run one year. So I am afraid I can't help you there as I don't know international insurance companies who could help. Sorry.

As just now I have found information, that this permit cost 100$... I have contacted also one of the local tour guides if he knows something about it and he said that I can fly a drone with no permission even if they say I need one... You already have been there. Did they check if you have a drone in your backpack or if you have this permission? Thanks for reply in advance!

@@szewczyk_travel when arriving in the Airport they checked all my luggage including my Backpack. I told Them i have a Drone but they did not Care. Check is only for drugs and firearms. When flying also Nobody asked ... I don't remember If i Had to pay but i think Not. Tbh: i would Not risk bringing a Drone to countries Like marocco... But i don't know If i would get a permission for my small one again

Hi Anna, When I was there in Match 2018, Nobody cared about my Drone. Even Police at the Airport when entering the country did not want to see anything when checking the luggage.

Can you share if you had any problem?

I got the permission way before the new license classes so I can't tell you. I did a test from German TÜV but I think, the license according to the Type of drone you are using will be sufficient. But it is just a guess.

I think there is no way to do it legally without getting a license. At the end nobody asked us. The xray all the luggage when entering zanzibar but did not really care for the drone which was in the luggage (not carry on). Question is, if you will publish the images later.

How did your visit go with the drone? I am the same, content for my social platforms, small drone (dji mini 2). TCAA have sent me permit forms with fees but it seems im also seeing people havent needed this.

Uh...Looks Like all webpages regarding drone license have been removed. As far as I know there will be new regulations on EU level next year. Perhaps they stopped the licensing until these are implemented? I can't find anything on the TÜV Website. All old links redirect to the homepage.

What do you mean with "how much it took"? How much money? Nothing. It was free for me I think. When arriving in Tanzania at the airport nobody is interested in drones....

@@JosefMaxHajda Sorry, I meant " how LONG it took " . So upon arrival nobody seemed to care about your drone.....and afterwards; somebody controlled your permits when they saw you flying it ? Is there any tanzanian chip that workes better for flying drones than other ?

@@DonPechito i really can't remember how long. Over all until I found the right person and had everything it was over 1 month. More like 2+ :) I even told the securities i have a drone when they x-rayed.my luggage. Nobody cares. I was up in the north. Nobody cares when I flew....and no idea what a tanzanian chip is.

Thanks, phone is not working. They answered me on FB ""You need first to file request to the Ministry of Defence for their clearance". LOL

oh wow. that is strange. They did not ask me to do that.... by the way, my experience: When entering the country at Zanzibar airport, they scan all (!!) luggage with x-ray but they were not interested in my drone. They only checked for drugs and weapons. I told him I have one and can show a license, but he did not want to see it. But mine is a mavic and nobody ever asked me about it. Perhaps this is different if you have a bigger one.

Yeah, I have a DJI spark. The forward flight is from Europe to Addis Abeba and next to Kilimanjaro airport. The. I will take a flight from Arusha to Zanzibar.

well over all... multiple weeks. it took me a while till I found the right contact person. after that I think it was within 2 weeks

@@JosefMaxHajda Thank you for the reply. Right now I am in the middle of the process, and boy, oh boy, it's a looog process. I was able to contact the officials, got a log in account to login to TCAA CASIP Portal, now I am stuck at the price list. All I can say for sure that the drone use fee is 10 USD per day, 100USD to register. From the start that's a little dumb, how can I know when I can fly the drone if I am not even there, it's weather dependent, but you have to pick a day in your document. Any other info is unclear, I did contact them again, waiting for an official clarification related to tests, pilot license fees and so on. I will reply back after I found out what they need. My drone is mini 4 pro, in Europe we don't need a pilot license, or permission for it. One thing is for sure - if the costs are bigger then 200USD there is no point using it, I will leave my drone at home. Next time when I book my vacation i will take this also in consideration, a fee is ok, but a rip off say something about my vacation destination. My feelings about this are off because I have to pay from the start hotel tourist fees and visa, that's 260USD total already. Rant out and sorry that I'm complaining, I don't understand why they don't make a process for foreigners easier and simpler. They'd make some money too and the tourists would be happier. Plus any video posted on the internet would be free advertising for their island, if they are still dependent on tourists income.

@@JosefMaxHajda I have an official answer now: Registration is 100 USD Operator registration is free Operations permit (will depend on the days that you will operate but it's 10USD per day) So it's just as simple as that

Hi Vladimir, I am sorry to hear that. I don't tell the name, because I am not 100% sure, if it is the right way to name officials here by name. Furthermore he gave me his private email address because their official email system did not work properly. I did nothing else than everybody else and just called all numbers I could find. As this is mor than one year a go now, I could not eve nremember the name of the person or the phone number, sorry. Just worked with what I found at that point in time. Also, I did not find a possibility to get an online certificate from British Model Flying Association online at this point especially not, when I am not living in the UK. The problem is, that most authorities only certify people, living within their country. Best regards, Josef

OK so useful actual info for everyone travelling to Tanzania with their drones: Just ring the main phone number you can find on TCAA website and let them put you through to the drone department. Pass the online test on bmfa.org and you'll get a certificate immediately. However, they don't provide a Flyer ID. Go on www.caa.co.uk and pass their online test. Now you get your flyer ID and are ready to get your permit. Just don't be confused. There are Flyer ID and Operator ID in place in the UK, however, you just need to get your Flyer ID and consider it an Operator ID for Tanzania's permit purposes as Tanzania calls your Flyer ID an Operator ID. All tests are accessible to anyone from all over the world as well as a cheap liability cover worlwide if you become a bmfa member. Enjoy flying in Tanzania;-)
