In this video, I take you through the step-by-step process of crafting a contemporary tanto knife. Regrettably, the endeavor took an unexpected turn as I encountered difficulties in fabricating the accompanying hardware for the tanto. This attempt marked my initial foray into this particular type of build, and, admittedly, I fell short due to insufficient research on the intricacies of the entire construction.
However, this setback won't deter me from future attempts. Stay tuned for upcoming builds, as I plan to revisit this design, and perhaps even give this specific tanto another shot.

The blade looks amazing! Thanks for keeping it real and showing how there are always things to learn and you have to know your limits. I'm coming up against those too, but it's still a blast learning!

It is only a failure if you stop trying. Set it aside, watch some videos of how others have done it, and when you are ready pick it up and get after it. Look at it this way, you DID learn something. One of the most profound things I had a master Bladesmith say to me while taking an ABS class, was that the thing ALL Bladesmiths have in common is that we start out making ugly knives. Yours certainly isn’t ugly, but it’s not what you were hoping for. Keep going friend!!! You Will get there!!! Never stop learning!!!

Well I'll say this... That failure looks a lot better than a lot of mine lol and if you're looking for info on tantos you should check out island blacksmith and Walter sorrells... As for the saya (scabbard) try making a saya nomi chisel to carve it out... Once again island blacksmith has a few videos using it and one video forging it... Keep it up, doing great 👍

Don’t scrap it. Keep it around and learn the techniques. Nice work. It’s looking good.

Thanks man! I'm going to keep it around and figure out a different way to finish it.. Its not going to anything close to the way Japanese blades are constructed, but maybe it'll be cool. I'll try a more tradional one again in the near future.
